Dear boy, I suggest that you go to the record store first thing tomorrow morning and buy HA. This is an outrage!

“Troublegum” by light years… there are only two songs I completely enjoyed on HA (“If It Kills Me” & “Voodoo Doll”). HA isn’t the worst T?-CD but it’s definitely among my 5 least favorite albums by them.

And, well, “Troublegum” is a masterpiece. One of the best albums of all time and the only albums that come close to it are “Semi-Detached”, because I think it’s even more emotional, has a raw production and great songwriting or “Suicide Pact - You First” because of its different approach, its energy and - again - its production.

Yeah, the obvious choice is Troublegum, but the results of the poll are a little misleading… I mean its not ten times better than High Anxiety. I think it all comes down to the drumming, for me. In saying that, Neil’s drumming on NANE is exceptional.

Altough it´s a great album, HA really doesn´t stand a chance against the mighty Troublegum…

I’m listening to the last two albums a lot this week. High Anxiety is the business! But Troublegum is just a total classic, so it gets my vote (not that it seems to need it!)

Problem is - HA is not a bad album - its a great album… BUT its just Troublegum has been round quite a bit longer so those songs have been etched into the brain over a longer period… I used to walk to school with troublegum on my walkman, I used to sit through general studies at college listening it i used to ride the bus back from uni listening to it… I had it on tape in my first car - HA hasn’t been around long enough for that!

You’re absolutely right, I just found it interesting that someone who never heard of T? would think HA is so much better. It’s true though, if you bought ‘troublegum’ first time round, those are engrained in your head.

Still prefer ‘Infernal Love’ though ;)

I always have a hard time comparing Therapy? albums to each other. I only know that I like Shameless least, but all the albums are very cool. I think Semi-Detached might be my favorite T?-album, though there is also Suicide Pact (which is fantastic, but I have to be in the exactly right mood). I am a big fan of Graham’s drumming. I can’t rank NANE well enough for now, but obvioulsy, this one is on heavy rotation.

Of the two albums in the poll I would now rather listen to HA than to Troublegum. I think that Troublegum is the better album, though. The lyrics make a clear difference. High Anxiety has cool music, but lyrically, it is Therapy?’s worst album. Hmm, someone should make a album lyrics poll, there I really have a clearer opinion.

Lyrics:

Troublegum - Semi-Detached - Infernal Love - Never Apologise Never Explain - Shameless - Suicide Pact - High Anxiety

An interesting idea… I think I mostly agree with your list, though I think SPYF should be higher than Shameless. Can’t make up my mind about Semi Detahced, though. *shrugs*

Gotta be the ‘Gum fer me too just for Die Laughing alone, that song always has a positive effect when I’m down. But (controversy alert) Fyfe could never come up with something as cool as Rust.

Well, Fyfe chose not to use a double-bass drum and without that it’s pretty much impossible to replicate “Rust”

However, the beats on “Skining Pit”, “Teethgrinder” etc, are pretty special too, no?

Damn right they are. And Rust ain’t double kick, its toms, snare flams and single kick. Sum1 aint a drummer.

I’ve played drums for years! I’m pretty sure “Rust” is double-bass, although I haven’t listened to it in ages.

Can anyone else provide some input here?

Hey buddy no offence meant it is hard to tell I only worked out the pattern after watching the dvd cos Neil uses a phat old 18” floor tom it can get confusing. Yeh gots to say Fyfe’s stuff like Teethgrinder, Skyward, Knives are pretty spot on but stuff like that opening fill on Perversonality is cringeworthy.

No problem man - I’m gonna watch the DVD and work it out.

I tend to make a quick snap judgement on the drums when I first hear a song, and when I first heard ‘Rust’, I just said “oh, double kick” and didn’t think anymore about it.

Interesting about ‘Perversonality’ - I think the drumming is pretty fucking excellent on that, but I’m not too keen on the drums in ‘Skyward’, opinions, eh? :)

I think my favourite Fyfe drum-track is any live version of ‘Neck Freak’

The first Album I heard was troublegum - round my mates house who had an unlabbeled tape copy - loved it and bought infernal love (by accident at the time).I was initially very dissapointed (but young), so it stayed collecting dust in my cd carousel… Until the day that I got bored with my other tunes - then I worked on it. I think that (unintentionally diplomatically) I like different albums depending on what mood I am in - Troublegum will always have a special place, but the first album where the lyrics really hit home was Infernal Love - then I learned to apreciate the lyrics in troublegum, as well as its bouncy punk sound.

I went through this story because I think that my apreciation grows/changes with each album every time I listen to them. Depending on how I am feeling and what my previous thoughts on the song were. The explaination above is only for two albums…the possibilities are scary
