Help me pick a rig

#

Started by Idlevice2

I’m in the market for a new amp/cab setup for my guitar. After considerable (half-assed) browsing I’m looking at either a Randall head (its the solid state 1oo watt one, can’t remember the model name) with a Behringer (or other) 4x12 cab OR a Hughs and Kettner stack (again with 4x12 cab). Any suggestions, other than Marshall because I hate that distortion!

I own a Marshall personally. Mesa Boogie has some good stuff. Alot of bands I like use them and they have a great sound. They just don’t sell them in any of the shops I know of, so i haven’t been able to sit down with the various types they have.

SOme of the Johnsons’s sound pretty good to, and usually come with a ton of effects, and speaker emulators built in. Bit pricey though.

Mesa are out of my price range, unfortunatly, but if I had the money I’d get a soldano, anyway. I don’t really want effects, either, becuase I’ve got enough of that with pedals.

Have you considered, takes breath, looking on ebay? I bought my JCM900 Dual Reverb 4100 head and a 2x12 cab fitted with celestions for £450 all in mint condition.

As long as the person has good feedback you can generally get away with out getting your fingers burnt. Also buyying second hand will help you get a better rig for half the origonal price.

Makes to look out for, Laney, Peavey, Randall.

Hope this helps.

Then get a Marshall JCM 800, if you have pedals you won’t need the distortion through the amp. I never use mine anyway!

ebay’s always a valid option, but British mail… Well that’s another matter. MY dad’s got something against Laney (dunno what, exactly), and since he’s paying a good whack of it for Christmas, I doubt he’d appreciate me getting one :)

I think I’ll probably go for the Randall and get a Behringer 4x12, but I’ve head Behringer are really unreliable (but then again, what exactly could go wrong with a speaker cab?)

If it’s just a cab your getting I wouldn’t worry, the only thing they’ll do is buy speakers and whack eem in it.

Sounds good. Let us know how you get on.

Behringer 4x12 cab will beat many of those “legendary” marshall cabinets made in 80´s and after. Some of those series that marshall made then and now are real poor sounding. Not all but some.
Theres so many guitarists that play trough a bad cabinet because they think that if it says Marshall it´s good. I say go with the Beringer. Low price meets a decent quality there. And if you don´t wanna have a Marshall anyway you don´t have a problem with the logo.
Still I must say I´m all the way a Marshall man myself. But for an amp try out the Crate Blue Voodoo head if you can. You might like that one.

I’m trying to avoid valve amps… knowing me I’d have every one of the buggers broken by February, which is why I was going for the Randall- its the best solid-state distortion I’ve heard, and its pretty much exactly the modern hi-gain tone I want. The actual hi-gain tone I want is the Soldano SL100, but I’m a couple of grand short, and the Randall is £360- I don’t want it THAT much!

Valve amps aren’t so bad. They cut down on your heating bills. Just play for an hour or so, and those tubes get toasty enough to heat your room for a the rest of the night :D

Yeah, the other guitar player has a valve amp and it has that effect on my room… or maybe its the 5 guys playing Animal Bones (etc.) within a 1 metre squared area in my bedroom…

anyway, I’ve been converted about Marshall… to an extent. I tried the MG 100 and it had nice distortion (I think it may have been a TSL I tried before, and it was so bad I’ve hated Marshall ever since- that and the whole paying for ,brand names thing. In saying that, I can get an MG stack for £300, and the Randall/Behringer stack is gonna skin me about £550, but I still think I’ll go for the latter… better clean channel, cab has wheels.

Here’s the latest; I have NOT changed my mnd about the Randall amp; its definitly the one I want. The cabinet however… I was thinking 4x12 may be a BIT excessive. But then I thought, hey, why shouldn’t it be? So, anyway, I was beginning to consider this; RS125XL Cabinet by Randall. Its got 2x12 Celestion 80s, and an Eminence 15” speaker on the bottom. Not only will it do with my amp, and give me more bottom end than I could ask for, but it will also mean that I will have the same surface area as the bass playing in our band. I PROPOSE A DUEL! And then my high frequencies would tear throuh his sound like an appropriote similie. A ha ha ha ha.

Ummm… thoughts?

stay with the 4x12, 15’s sound muddy and shite for most guitar rigs. with the right amp head you can get huge lows with a 4x12 (see; Fu Manchu, Black Sabbath, etc..)

Just an update. I got my Randall G2 yesterday morning, and it rocks! Plenty of noise (had jun drowning out my brother’s drums from about 2 metres away without turning it up full) and great tone, complements my Voodoo V perfectly. At the minute,I’m running it through a Behringer 4x12, but this is just a loan from the shop untill my Randall 4x12 comes in, should take at least 2 weeks, though. What does not complement the sound, however, is my Danelectro black paisley pedal, which makes the amp sound like total ass, so I’m gonna have to get rid of it, which is a pity because I liked the sound it gave from my old H&H VS Musician amp. Ah, well, I’m not complaining. Thanks to Baird Sound Systems, comiserations to my neihbours.

I Tried out an Orange Thunderverb head with its own special cab (as it can be used as a bass amp as well) yesterday and I was very very impressed with the sound of it. Distortion with it was a phat thick sound but had perfect clarity to it and with my les paul was the sound I have been looking for and would be my ideal set up. I tried the other orange amps they had there and they are also brilliant the combos are great for the price as well. I did try some randals and mesa boogie amps but although they were very powerful they lacked the thickness and sounded too clinical.
