According to Reuters it happened while he was on a working holiday in Peru.

I think he deserves to be called the most influential radio dj of the world.

Yeah. Good music has lost a great champion. He brought bands like Thin Lizzy Joy Division, The Fall, and The Undertones to wider public attention. And I’m sure he played Therapy? very early on.

A very sad loss.

Andy Kershaw just described him as the most influential figure in British rock ever & said that if you were 16 and in a band, then his death meant you just lost a big chance.

Wasn’t he the first person to play T? on (national) radio?

Sad day, and at 65 too… I think a lot of people will miss him. Although I can’t say I’d listen to him that much, you kind of always assumed he’d be around, and that it was okay to be over 25 and still care about music.

Very sad. My sympathies are with his family.

I liked the way he promoted such a huge range of musical styles. Even at 65 he was a breath of fresh air amongst all the homogenized rubbish you get on radio.

A message from Andy C…

“John Peel RIP.

DJ John Peel was the first d.j. to play Therapy? on the radio when he played our first single ‘Meat Abstract’. following that he was a great champion of the band in the early days, playing our mini-albums ‘Babyteeth’ and ‘Pleasure Death’ and giving us two sessions for his show. I had the pleasure of meeting him on one occasion at the Phoenix festival in ‘94 and he was witty, friendly and an absolute gentleman.

I first started listening to the show on a tiny radio, under my bedcovers when i was 12 years of age and over the years his show was where i first heard many of my favourite bands and his festive fifty was always one of the years highlights. i still listened to his show now.

he was a part of my musical education and a great help to our fledgling band. he will be missed.

Andy C.”

Really sad. We in the US were lucky they put out so much stuff directly from his show. I’ve never heard so many great performances from such a diverse selection of bands.

Oh bugger, another good one gone. This’ll just open another space for some other fuckwit to jump into that hasn’t got the first clue about music.

Will miss you Peel.

It was a bit of shock hearing the news of his death,i was listening to Radio 1 at work when the news broke. They’re so many bands out there that owe their careers to John Peel.I saw Andy Kershaw on the Channel 4 news last night,he was talking about the last time he was chatting to John and he said John wasn’t very happy with the way Radio 1 had moved his show to a later timeslot and he said it was killing him.

I know this is a bit late, but his funeral had just gone by and I’m still numb that he’s gone. I only heard bits of his show on Radio 1 but I liked what I heard.

The fact that he had Napalm Death and Carcass do a session for him was out of this world. Whilst the other rock show on Radio 1 played mostly poodle rock and the odd bit of thrash, John touched the nerve of the underground, and brought grindcore and Death metal to the light.

There won’t be like one like him again.

Rest easy, John.
