Bands Still Keeping it Strong?

#

Started by FNYANKEZ

After listing to N.A.N.E. it got me thinking, how many bands have been around as long (or not even as long) as T? and still continue to put out quality stuff, or continue to improve?

Here’s my list by category

Still Going Strong:
Therapy?, Strung Out, Pearl Jam, Pulley, Pennywise, Bad Religion, The Get Up Kids, Fugazi

Not What they Were but Still Entertaining
Descendents,Over Kill,Slayer,Millencollin,Local H,The Cure
Less Than Jake,Iron Maiden, U2

On the Downward Slide
Blink 182, Green Day, Ten Foot Pole, All, The Offspring

For Blink 182 & Green Day they need to put them on the 2 week recording bootcamp. Anymore time than that and they think their making Sgt. Peppers.

Need to Stop now
Metallica, Megadeth, The Ataris, MxPx, AC/DC, Kiss,

Let’s see some other lists

Have to intervene, of course. :)
Both bands are practically on hiatus, so you can’t count them really.
If you think of the other bands the members are involved (Bill Stevenson with Only Crime, Karl Alvarez with All Systems Go! and Chad Price with Drag The River), I think they’re still going strong (as musicians).

Disagree, both bands’ last albums have been the best they’ve done for years (esp. Green Day).

Frank Black (not only because of THE Pixies reunion tour, both his last albums were brilliant)
Nomeansno (25 years around and still rocking)
David Bowie, Giant Sand, Leatherface, Hot Water Music, Supersuckers, Melvins, Mike Patton, Mark Lanegan, Greg Dulli / Twilight Singers, Superchunk…

…and some German bands:
Die Ärzte, Die Toten Hosen, Phillip Boa & The Voodooclub, Boxhamsters, EA 80 (all around for at least 15 years and still (or again) making excellent records)

I only mentioned those that are still delivering quality music.

Granted All and the Descendents are basically the same, except the singer. My assesment was based on length between albums, it’s just that I wasn’t that crazy about the last few All CDs. I thought Problematic flat out sucked.

Have to disagree on Blink 182s and Green Days last albums.
The only good song on Blink’s CD was the song sung by Robert Smith. “I’m Feelin It” is the worst piece of crap I’ve heard not from a boy band.

I think musically they’ve grown, but lyrically they’re trying to write deeper music, and to me it comes off comical.

I’ve just finished giving American Idiot a few spins, and outside a couple of songs, it did do anything for me. And the last thing I need is Green Day trying to be Rush with two 10 minute 5 part songs. I have nothing against trying to branch out, it’s one of the big things I love about T?, Strung Out and Megadeth (back in the day). But it doesn’t work with them, at least not the way they are doing it.
I thought the album before American Idiot wasn’t anything special either (Warning I think?).

Not saying either are horrible or anything, they still put out some stuff I like, but I just think with each successive release there’s less and less that excites me.

I think Nimrod and Warning both sucked, that’s why I was so positively surprised by American Idiot.

Concerning ALL and Descendents, with chad as ALL singer the two bands have become musically closer, the jazzy style from Allroy Saves.. is totally missing.
And as at ALL shows you have around a third of the songs from Descendents and vice versa at Descendents shows, so over the past decade you could only separate them by who’s singing.
They just aren’t around that much as they used to due to their side projects, production jobs (Bill & Steve), full time jobs (Milo) and families. I think everyone of them has wife and kids and they’re hard to support by travelling around the world and playing to 200+ people.

Allroy for President!

Again my statement about All was solely on the merit of the last releases. I guess Milo has just been cherry-picking the stronger material. Since the band writes all of the songs together, and parce it out when they go into the studio. On top of whatever Chad and Milo bring on their own of course.

Still a big fan of both though.

If you have digital cable with On Demand, you should check out the music section. On mine they currently have a little 5-10minute feature on All where they’re interviewing Chad (he looks like Ted Nugent right now), with some live footage.

Pretty cool for All/Descendents fans.

Drag The River are announcing a european tour for ages now, I hope it’ll take place early next year. I like Chad’s voice and energy on stage.

One of the finest prog bands of the 70’s and still producing quality stuff. Their last CD A Nod and a Wink rarely leaves my CD player.

Would be good to hear if anyone else likes them!

There are a lot of bands making ‘alternative / indie’ music that are still around for way longer than 10 years.
I think it’s quite easy with commercial auccess, like Pearl Jam or R.E.M. thus becoming mainstream acts and selling millions of albums or artists like Nick Cave or Einstürzende Neubauten also being of cultural interest and commercially successful as well.
But what’s reall surprising is how many bands with a way smaller following still make music.
If you nver had a chart hit paying your rent and being in your forties you normally have to think about your future and whether your music will pay all your bills for the rest of your life. From that point of view everyone still being creative (i.e. not this 60s oldies shite like The Sweet or others just living from the nostalgia of the people) earns my respect even though their music isn’t as good as it may have been.

Yeah but I hate when bands dont change..People grow up and their songwriting moves on too.

If you wants bands that never change, listen to Bad Religion or Iron Maiden or something :D

Hey now, listen to Suffer and then listen to The Empire Strikes First and tell me Bad Religion hasn’t grown. Granted they have a signature sound and approach, but they are always tweaking it.

TO change gears a little. 2004 has definitely picked up over the last 4 days.
On Monday I finally got NANE, and have listened to it about 30 times already, love it.

And I just got my copy of Strung Out’s Exile in Oblivion, which came a week early (it helps to order directly from the band). By far the best CD I’ve heard all century! Not one bad (or even weak) track.

You want a band which grows, they’re it. I wouldn’t even call them Punk anymore, except that the songs are pretty short. But they seem almost more like a speed metal band that can sing. Highly Recommended.

To everyone I know now, I’m bugging them to listen to NANE and Exile in Oblivion!

There’s definietly been some quality punk ablums, but there’s been plenty of shitty one’s too.

Good Charlotte, Simple Plan (who I liked at the Warped Tour last year so I bought their CD and it sucked!),
Blink 182’s latest was pretty bad too. Of course that’s all that’s played over the radio while quality bands like Bad Religion, Pennywise, No Motiv, Thrice, Strung Out, Millencolin, Pulley and bunch of others are ignored.

I wouldn’t call call any of them punk. Maybe a few years ago you could argue for bands like Green Day and Blink 182 being punk but definately not now. It looks to me like Blink 182 and Good Charlotte have being tempted by the emo side.

Other good punk albums that i think need a mention are…

The Foamers(i would argue the best album of 2004), The Peacocks and The Casualties.

After hearing their last CD, yes…they need to stop now, or run screaming from their major label before it’s too late.

I agree, but they still get lumped in the Punk category. I have nothing against Emo, there are quality Emo bands who can play the style well (The Get Up kIds for example), but Blink 182 just doesn’t happen to be one of them.
