In response to dimebags death

Question: Does aggressive music make a person more prone to violence?

Argument: Dimebag’s death is the direct result of him making aggressive music.

No.

I listen to aggressive thrash metal a lot, and I enjoy fairly rough mosh pits (although if anyone falls over i’m the first to grab their arm and help them up).

However, I have not been in a physical fight since primary school (I’m 25), and I have not ever been driven to hitting someone (and believe me, I’ve had provocation). I’m just not a violent person.

NO

I listen to a number of heavy bands including Soulfly, Sepultura, Pantera, Therapy? (Knives-quite aggressive), etc

I have never been in a fight despite being provoked now and again. If anything I think aggressive music can be used in a positive theraputic way. Speaking from personal experience if I have had a bad day or someone/something upsets me. I can always go home, crank the music up and yes this actually takes my aggression away.

But hey there are people in the press and people who dont understand this music that will say this music makes people violent and blow it all out of proportion.

I dont see how the kind of music Dimebag played can have any relevance to what happened. There were nutters before heavy metal - and if heavy metal didnt exist then there would still be nutters.

I think everything can be the reason for aggressive behaviour. Therefore everthing is to blame and everything needs to be forbidden.

I read somewhere, that a man saw a cornflakes merchandising pic and was provoked through this to slaughter and rape a girl.

So if it isn’t agressive music or violent movies or computer games, what is it? Why does someone just snap, go out and kill a bunch of people?

Is it societies fault? Is it natural selection in a way? Is it because of a chemical imbalance? Is it because they were abused as children?

I dont think listening to music, watching a film, playing a particular game or looking at a cornflakes advert causes regular, well adjusted people to go out and commit crimes.

Usually there is a history of problems in peoples lifes that cause this kind of behaviour.

Certainly not. I listen to heavy metal, “Die Hard” and “The Terminator” are two of my all time favourite films, I have played Grand Theft Auto 1&3, Quake, Doom, Carmageddon and other “violent” computer games over the years and really enjoyed them, but I have no trouble seperating reality from fantasy, and have no desire to ever harm another person in any way.

I agree with you on those comments all the way ;-)

A sane person understands that a game or music or a film is of no consequence other than it is a form of entertainment, but how or why does a person get so obsessed with something that they go out and hurt someone.
What has gone wrong? Who is to blame? is the person who commits the killing fully at fault and if not who is?

I read the shooting may have been a grudge thing. If not, then mental instability is the reason you’re looking for.

How do you one day snap and go kill someone?

I guess you need to be suicidal and have an incredibly malicious personality, to make you be prepared to take others with you.

The tragic irony of all of this is that Pantera’s lyrics were frequently angry, malicious, and vengeful.

So far, no-one knows, not even the cleverest prychologists and psychiatrists. Like said before by tatty, it can be everything that triggers an immediate agressive action. I do think however that this spontanious outburst of agression and violence has been built up over a long period of time.
Usually people who do this have feelings of low self esteem and of being left out in the real world so they create a world of their own. Problem is to detect this before they act. In a world where we are becoming selfish and where we look after each other less and less every day, this might only be the tip of an iceberg. Have you noticed that it happens more frequently in richer than in poorer countries?

Totally true. After the shock of hearing what happened I thought of Phil Anselmo being slated for “inciting” the killer after his interview in the recent Metal Hammer. It obviously takes someone who is seriously unhinged to get up on a stage and shoot dead someone who’s only crime has been to make music and enrich peoples lives by doing so, adn then to start shooting into a crowd of people who came to see a band and enjoy themselves. Its a pity that the gunman was shot also as we’ll never know his motivation now

No sane person walks out and shoots someone cause their favourite band breaks up - this guy must have had some serious issues. We will probably never know what lead up to this - although we will probably hear from his neighbours about how ‘odd’ he was and how he was a loner or some shit

In reply to the question i actually thing aggressive music stops violent behaviour. It’s like an outlet for your anger. Hatebreed get loads of people saying that if it wasn’t for their music they would of probably killed someone. I think it’s mainly the society you live in. I’m sure there’s just as many people that listen to aggressive music in Canada, Germany, Japan etc, but there’s no where near the amounmt of violent crimes.
