Underrated Albums

#

Started by FNYANKEZ

Here are some albums I think have generally been ignored, forgotten, or were unfairly pummeled when they were originally released. Another set were fine albums but were considered flops when compared to a particular groups previous effort.

Here’s a few of my favorites

T?- Semi-Detached
Pearl Jam- No Code
Metal Church- The Human Factor
Megadeth- Killing is My Business..
Testament- Practice What Your Preach
Slayer- South of Heaven
Nada Surf- Proximity Effect
Lemonheads- Car, Button,Cloth
Ned’s Atomic Dustbin- Are you Normal?

I’m sure I can list more, but I can’t

Let’s see some others

Pearl Jam - Vitalogy (a brilliant album with some of their best songs)

Green Day - Insomniac (darker than dookie, because it didnt sell every one seems to think it is a flop)

Stone Temple Pilots - Tiny Music… (I think kerrang named this album the best to avoid in their back catalogue - the knobheads)

Alice In Chains - Alice In Chains (people wrote them off after dirt but I think this album is a gem!)

Red Hot Chili Peppers - One Hot Minute (Dave Navarro on guitar - nuff said)

Wildhearts - Endless Nameless (panned by critics and shunned by the band - i love that album though)

Therapy? - Infernal Love (I know quite a few people on the board love this album, but when it comes to the press they seem to see this album as a turkey - which is clearly not the case!!)

Actually reading my last post - nearly all those albums are follow ups to those bands ‘big’ albums (wasnt planned).

I guess the music press are generally lazy - if the band produces ‘troublegum mk 2’ they get slated for cashing in on success and if they do something different they get slated anyway!

I think a lot of bands make their best, darkest music when their backs are up against the wall…

I’ll keep it brief. Just to ramble off a few:

Mayday - Matthew Ryan
Fantastic Planet - Failure
In Loving Memory Of… - Big Wreck
Read Music/Speak Spanish - Desaparecidos
Transmission - Tea Party
Lohio - Ass Ponys

and, of course, the cinematic genius of…

Black Love - Afghan Whigs

…makes my heart hurt a little just thinking about it…

I second the mention of STP’s “Tiny Music…” Brilliant album through and through.

I’ll also mention Rollins Band - “Weight”
Urge Overkill “Saturation”
Alice in Chains “Jar of Flies”, just an EP, but my favorite of theirs nonetheless.
Social Distortion “White Light White Heat White Trash”

White Zombie- Astro Creep 2000. That album is solid gold.

Also, Insomniac, definitly (I know its been mentioned before).

Pink Flyod- The Wall (because Dark Side of the Moon tends to overshadow it).

CKY- Volume 1 and IDR. They are incredible, and have only a fraction of the support they deserve. Can’t wait for the new album…

check out “in a bar under the sea” (memory of a festival! disappointed in the sun! serpentine! roses!) by the way, to me by far their most underrated album. after that, check out “worst case scenario” (hotellounge! via! suds & soda!). and after that check out “the ideal crash” (magdalena!). all absolutely great albums!!

and after that… smile and enjoy your fantastic musical taste! ;)

I don’t think Jimmy Eats World Clarity is underated now its regarded as a classic.
The Bowie albums in not_that_kind_of_guy’s list are all classics as well, scary monster’s is often refered to as the last good Bowie album in reviews but i think Bowie’s most recent albums Heathen and Reality are just as good.

I thought I might mention Foreign Objects- The Undiscovered Numbers and Colors/Universal Culture Shock re-release. Its never gonna be in any top-100, but its simply a collection of some of the finest riffs ever written. Maybe its not accessable like CKY is, but if you take the time to switch off and really listen, its the most sublime music ever to indulge yourself in.

i think nothing really ends is the most incredible song on the album… maybe my favourite song.. whoa.. again its a miracle that this and many many other bands are still victims by mainstream music no? so many bands that would deserve just a little bit more respect.. but anyway its not too important for those who know them..
