How did YOU get into Therapy? ?

Hi all! I wonder how you guys got into Therapy?, here’s my story, don’t know if you’re interested. Enjoy!

It was in ‘94 (I was 13) that I first saw Therapy? on MTV Europe, it was Nowhere. Shortly after this, I heard Die Laughing. Back then, I was still into music like 2 Unlimited and Ace Of Base and stuff (I know, I was stupid…), so I never listened to any hard rock. This continued for some years, then they suddenly hit the top 10 of the Dutch charts with Diane. This was during the Happy Hardcore days, which I also liked (I know, stupid me again…). Of course, I remembered T? from Nowhere and Die Laughing, but I never looked for a T? album. A couple of years later, somewhere in ‘98, I started to get more and more interested in rock music, first I listened to Nirvana (Nevermind, still love that one!), and some Metallica stuff (started with One, great classic, always loved this song, even in my Euro-trash-pop days…). After that, I started to look for more rock music, I then I remembered Therapy? I got the album Troublegum, and immediately listened to Nowhere and Die Laughing. Aah, the sound of recognition! This was what rock should be like! I didn’t stop listening to that album for weeks. After that, I went looking for more T? albums, first Infernal Love. At first, I didn’t really like this album, but this album has grown to me, I listened to it quite a lot before I really discovered the brilliance of some songs, like Jude The Obscene, and A Moment Of Clarity. Then I got Born In A Crash, my favs on that album being Opal Mantra and Innocent X (live). The next album I listened to was Nurse. At first, I didn’t liked it, so I tried Semi-Detached, which was pretty much love at first hearing… I guess it’s my favourite album, with great songs like Lonely, Cryin’ Only, Straight Life, Church Of Noise. I decided to give Nurse another shot, and surprise surprise, I liked it all of a sudden! But then I figured: hey, since I have already those albums, I might as well get the early ones to! I saw Caucasian Psychosis somewhere in a small record shop (where they have some rare bootlegs and stuff), for only 30 guilders. The sound of this album isn’t perfect, but there are some great songs on it, like Punishment Kiss, Innocent X, and Potato Junkie. Of course I immediately bought Suicide Pact after its release, but I really disliked the album in the beginning, it just didn’t fit well into T?’s other stuff for me. After a while though, I started to listen to it more often, and now I actually quite like it, Little Tongues First being my fav on this one. So then I had all the official albums (except So Much For The Ten Year Plan), so I started to look for some b-sides and live stuff. Now, I made two albums with B-sides, about all of them are on it, and a self-made live album, with songs from different festivals and gigs. Last October, I visited my first T? concert, which was great. This will certainly not be my last concert, that’s for sure.
I know I still have a lot of catching up to do with some of you, but I turned out to be a T? fan, just like every single one of you did. Now, when I’m in a bar or something, I sometimes wear my T? shirt, with the band on it. Some people are looking at it, and you see them frown, but some also recognise Therapy?, which is pretty nice too! But I actually don’t mind that many people don’t know Therapy?, it’s just my own style, which makes me quite unique, at least in my surroundings, since I never met any real T? fan before around here. Now, the search for live bootlegs continues, and some other T? stuff too. I purchased a T? poster via E-bay (which unfortunately hasn’t arrived yet), a hooded sweater and a shirt at the 013 concert, and a badge for my bag or something.
This is about it. Was this a great story or what? To be continued? Yeah, of course, what did you think? But now I would like to know how you guys got into Therapy?

I got into Therapy? by chance really. The band I was playing in were doing all this heavy crap…and then one day the guitarist played Opal Mantra to a T, and I was hooked. Went and bought the Nowhere and Trigger Inside 7’s…grew from there.

My first introduction with Therapy? was a promo on MTV Europe about some Formula-1 festival somewhere in the summer of ‘94. They used Screamager for the music of the promo. I liked the promo, and turned it up loud whenever it came on. After that I was them play at Pinkpop ‘94. I was 15 and I never went to a festival before. I hated the big mass of people jumping on me. Not to mention T?’s music. At that point I really thought they were a shite band.
When Infernal Love was out for a year, I had become more familliar with their music through media and some friends. I came across a copy of Infernal Love in a second hand store and bought it. Still, no fan, although I really loved the album, especially A Moment Of Clarity and Misery.
Again, a few years later, I saw them play at Lowlands. At that point I just thought they were a cool band and that gig was really one of the best festival gigs I’ve seen sofar. (Portishead was the best, in my opinion) They were wearing white overalls with a red cross on the back and Andy explained on stage that T? bandmembers all have different religious backgrounds, which really impressed me. Fuck war.
They did a session, signing. So I got my T-shirt signed. (Hell-o from Micheal, etc) Which was pretty cool.
A year later (99) I saw them play in Paradiso, Amsterdam. That was the best T? gig in a small club I can remember so far. That was their European tour of SPYF. I had no idea at all about albums they put out or anything.
I bought Semi-Detached. I listened. I cried at the last chorus of The Boy’s Asleep. The rest of the album wasn’t that accesible as Infernal Love, but I listened to Semi-Detached for weeks non stop. It only got better. From that day I checked every record shop that came on my way for any T? material. Before I knew it I pretty much had all the albums in a nice neat row at home. First I bought SPYF, Troublegum and Born in A Crash. Nurse, Caucausian Psychosis, Baby Teeth and Pleasure Death came last. I pretty much knew Troublegum (some friends made me listen to it) so when I listened to it the first time again, it was like touching the green green grass of home.
I started looking on the net for more, going to gigs etc. and i became a real fan, I geuss. So that’s my story…does that make me unhappy?

A friend of mine forced me to listen to Troublegum, I thought it was okay so I taped it. Then heard a live gig on the radio from the Feile
festival, they played Teethgrinder first and I was then hooked - Teethgrinder was the most fucked up thing I’d ever heard and I wanted more. Teethgrinder was on Nurse so I bought it. Then bought Babyteeth and Pleasure Death but I thought they were shit (now I love them of course)Then bought Infernal Love when it came out. It was then I realised I had a problem, and it was only beginning!! Since then, I’ve nearly bankrupted myself from buying all sorts of Therapy? shit,
but I’ll keep on doing it!

I’m into T? since ‘95, since they released stories. I was having exams at that moment, and I felt so happy each time they played it on the radio!!!! Then, a few months later, I needed new clothes and I bought a nice T?-sweater, just because I thought I would look ‘cool’ with it. After that I also decided to buy infernal love and troublegum. Since then my life isn’t the same anymore…

My first Therapy? experience was somewhere back in 1992/1993 when I first saw the Teethgrinder video on 120 Minutes on MTV.
I really liked the riffs mainly because they sounded quite Metal.
(I really listen to a lot of Metal). Only the vocals where totally distorded. Anyway, Years later, I looked up the review of Nurse in the dutch Aardschok Magazine, (an 8). I didn’t bother with it for a while (stupid!).
My next shock was the witness of a Live Opal Mantra video on the same 120 Minutes show! This was fuckin’ brilliant. I wanted really wanted that song so bad, but couldn’t find it anywhere.
So I thought I’d might as well buy Troublegum. I think this was after they played Pinkpop.
It took my two more years to find a copy of Born in a Crash.
It blessed me with a version of Opal Mantra.
I was Happy.

I got to know T? by accident in 95.
I found the infernal love at a second hand shop and lent it from there, without knowing who their were.
Then a few weeks later I found out that they would play near my home, so I decided with some friends to go there and since that time- seeing t? live- I just love them. A week after this gig I’d been in England and there I bought my first T? cd…

By the way T? always release a new album, when s.th. important or new happens in my life! It’s a kind of mysterious sometimes…

I was at school doing my A-levels when i got into Therapy? my friend had a discman and he had the Die Laughing CD single. I listened to Die Laughing and thought this is ok, then i heard Evil Elvis and i just thought ‘WOW!!’ I bought Infernal Love, but stupidly turned down the chance to see them in Cambridge in 1995. That’s my only Therapy? regret… i never got to see Therapy? with Fyfe. Since then i have been to 29 Therapy? shows and have roughly £400 worth of Therapy? cd’s, tapes and vinyl. Cheers Sim (or was it Kev?), thanks for bringing that Cd in back in the bad old days.

By the way, if you like Therapy? , buy The Yo-Yo’s album, Uppers and Downers. It’s my favourite album of 2000.

You saw GN’R? Cool! these are all really cool stories. the first time i heard of them was when radio Ulster broadcast their new years eve gig… i guess i got into them sometime during the barren spell between infernal love and semi detached when my mates were sure theyd broken up. the first recording i got was a crappy recordin of that belfast new year’s gig and born in a crash on the other side. only managed to catch them live once, at Belfast enpire in march.

My story is probably pretty lame, and I’m not sure I remember it totally well. I remember being in middle school, and some kid on the bus home was listening to Nurse. I just remember the cover sticking out in my head and I kind of made a mental note of the band.

A few years later, I heard Screamager on MTV. I used to go to the record store all the time, but I wasn’t sure which album to get. I joined Columbia House Mail Order CD club and ended up getting Hat’s Off. That was in November, and I asked for every single other album for Xmas. I got them all, and have been hooked ever since.

Yeah…I saw GN’R. I geuss it was in 92 or something. They just had Use Your Illusion out and it was the UYI tour. It was in Rotterdam, in ‘de Kuip’. (stadium). I remember an image of Slash to this day, wearing a long hat, and holding up his yellow Gibson up to the light…

It was 1993, I graduated from school, our ex-drummer gave me the tape of Nurse. I liked it. Then, saw their videos on MTV (Screamager and Teethgrinder)..I was shocked, because 3 short haired guys were making cool noise. Then I bought shortsharpshock. I was shortsharpshocked!
But, everything changed in February 1994,when I bought The Mighty TROUBLEGUM album. Until that time Suicidal Tendencies was the best band for me. Now, ST is No.2!!

TROUBLEGUM is still the best album in the world. For me, it means what bible means for a christian!!!

My ex-girlfriend had Troublegum on tape, she played it once, I quite liked it despite the poor quality recording, then some other time when wanting to put some music on I suggested that tape as I was intrigued to hear it again. The riff of Hellbelly got stuck right up there in my brain and then when I went on holiday to Italy I stole the tape and listened to it 24/7 on my Walkman. On returning home I bought Troublegum and Semi-Detached, then I heard Ten Year Plan on a promo CD on Kerrang! or something and got Suicide Pact for Christmas and then a while after that I bought Nurse and then while shopping one day I bought Infernal Love for my girlfriend (I still haven’t got my own copy) and then eventually acquired Pleasure Death and Babyteeth. I subsequently have seen Therapy? live twice, once at Newcastle, December 1999 and in November 2000 at the Leadmill, and my Therapy? exploits are only just beginning…

Lots Of Love,
Son Of Moose.

Until now I visited 7 of their concerts (with Clutch, Terrorvision, Pet Lamb, Spermbirds,…) and always was enthusiastic.
Last time they performed in Munich I had the chance of talking to Andy and Mikehell and was pretty surprised when they remembered what we had talked about two years earlier.
