Tightrope Walker

Started by ridders5

I didn’t really want to start a negative thread, and I would be the last person to criticise T?, but I have been listening to Semi Detached today, and I would be interested to hear what anyone else thinks of Tightrope Walker(track2)
For me it has the best chorus of the whole album, but the rest of it just does’t fit(and spoils it), anyone agree????

I agree that maybe the verse sounds a little awkward, but not so much that it spoils the song.

I disagree … Saw them live in 98 on a festival … semi detached wasn´t realeased, they played that song without the vocals in the chorus … and i didn´t know the song and the crowd really liked it … i don´t like the chorus on the album, cause i don´t like the vocals … it sounded better without the vocals …

I really like the verse … cool bassline … not that straight rhythm …

i have that live gig on tape … so i know both versions

For me it was always one of my favourite songs on the album, because it had a different feel through the song and was so disjointed in it’s arrangement (did that sound as wanky as i think it sounds?)
anyway I don’t mind it but your right the Chorus is fucking great.

not that i instantly like everything t? have ever done (well…), but i really love tightrope walker - and i mean the whole song; great verse, and the rest is cool too to me.. don’t really see the awkward-part; sorry to disappoint you ;)

oh, and man, don’t you go nuts every time you hear the one-two-three-four-part (at 2:21) of that song?? i do! that bit always makes me want to shout sooooo hard! it sounds so good, so energetic, so positive, so optimistic - hell yeah, i’m gonna listen to it again..

anyway..

i didn´t like the album, when it came out … but i do like it now … its not their best, but its not a weak album … and i really enjoy the “boy´s asleep” i think they should have kept this in the set list and got rid of diane as the slow song after the IL tour … the lyrics of the boy´s asleep are just perfect for live gigs :)

I feel a certain something when that solo eventually kicks in. It may be simple but it works so well.

I don’t think the song is that bad. Its not their best, but its a good song about walking when your drunk.

Now, we all know the T? boys like a drink and Andy came up with some good words for the song.

I love that song. I actually like the way the harmonized solo bit sounds from the live and/or radio versions I have. Especially the BBC1 version, the two guitars are more distinct and gives it a slightly different feel from the SD version.

Its my favourite song on the album too - I remember I used to have a live recording of it (I think from a P2P network - its not the version on this site  ) that was even better. It sounded as though it was recorded for a TV performance or something, no crowd noise. It started off really quiet, just a drumstick tapping out the rhythym, then a really loud, distorted DUH-NUH-NUH-NUH. Rawk!

They first played it in Dublin in 1997, and apart from the mumbled verses and Andy singing the words “tightrope walker” at the very end, the song was mainly instrumental.

I perferred that version, the musical changes were really pronounced and the song was uncluttered with lyrics, unlike the Semi Detached version.

I love that song! Everything about it is excellent. I love it when the melodic chorus kicks in after the disturbing, paranoid verses, and the instrumental part is ace, fantastic sound, and the counting is also fun.

Semi-detached is an interesting album. every track on it is beautiful if you listen to them deeply and in silence. also the beginning of the song is a pure sample of T?’s creativity and ability to control punk-metal strange sound
