4-Track recorder

#

Started by McBain

Does any of you guys use a 4-track recorder? I’m thinking about purchasing one for (very simple) home recording purposes and I would appreciate any advice on which product is good or not and what these machines can or cannot do.

Many thanks in advance!

Hi I used to use different ones many years back The Yamaha ones are quite straight forward to use and the Mini disk ones are quite good because unlike the Cassette ones you don’t don’t lose quality when bounceing tracks (which frees up tracks) but i can’t remember which model as i haven’t looked at one for five years.

I hope that is of some help.

Depends how much you want to spend. I have a Boss 308 (maybe wrong number, its 30 something anyway) and it does everything I need for home recording, and its all diital so its easy to put onto CDs. Shop around, and ask in shops.

Thanks for your replies, fellas!
I meanwhile bought a Fostex X-15 on ebay. That’s pretty much the cheapest solution (63 EUR). It’s one of the best 4-trackers…produced in the 80s. ;)
One day I will a get a digital recorder but till then this casette thing will have to do the job.
I also checked out what I can do on my PC. I recorded “Never Ending” accoustically as a test song using my headset-mic. Kindy shitty equipment I know, but to my own surprise the result wasn’t even that bad. (Sound quality I mean. My singing is actually pretty sad…)
In a few days I’ll get my Fostex and I’ll see what I can do with that.
Thanks again for your help!

I was interested in getting a 4 track a few years ago…it’s sooo 1990 though - PCs are the way to go. You can have virtually unlimited digital audio tracks as well as the vast array of midi and virtual instruments out there…

Getting a 4-track now is only like taking a step back in time. It’s good for portability, but then I use my laptop for that!!

I’ve been using it for about 8 months and its great for just mucking around on as well as producing some great quality recordings.

i’ve got some examples of it if you want to hear what its capable of, just let me know and i’ll put the links up here.
