To the religious

Started by mr self destruct

I recited a Christian prayer at school today, as an Atheist, and at the very time I was saying the prayer, I was thinking “fuck God”.

So, the question is, if there is a God, what will happen to me when I die?

do not worry, in this part of italy where i live, blasphemys like “fuck god” or similars are used for commas (=, ) and other marks like ! ? ; : . !? ??? !!!!!!!! and &%?!”$%%(but for the last one you have to repeat it a few times. the many you can say, the more effect you obtain!:) ) and others. and so do I.
so you can find a lot of guys in hell when you die (maybe we can meet there! great!)

Magic.

@Mr Self Destruct - If there is no god. Why ‘fuck him’? ‘Fuck Religion’, I could understand.
As to where you’re going after you die…

I saw the real burning bush in 2003 - it’s not actually burning, which came as a bit of a disappointment, but was a bit impressive, just for being that old.

Anyway, as not some much a christian, but the live-in lover of one, my understanding is that…

If God is love, forgiveness etc, then presumably when you die you would realise just how wrong you’ve been about what God is (in the same way as when you know you should get up in the morning but think you’ll get away with it but then get to th station to find that you just missed your train, this would be unequivicable). God would forgive you (he loves you, you know), but you would also need to forgive yourself before getting into the kingdom of heaven.

If God is not so forgiving, then you’re risking damnation. Presumably confessing your sins and doing penance for this would get round this but you’d need to be sincere.

A lot of christians now think that this is a heaven but no hell as such. Not quite sure where that leaves you.

C. S. Lewis wrote a book called The Problem Of Pain (tis a very good book…), and in it he addresses the question of why nonbelievers apparently go to Hell. He says that people ask ‘why can’t God, if He exists, just leave the non-believers alone when they die?’ His answer is basicly this: God doesn’t just ‘love everyone’. He IS love (and life, and light and joy, etc etc). Hell isn’t a type of hot prison, where God punishes those people who don’t believe in Him. Hell is just the absence of God. So Lewis’ response to the question why can’t God just leave unbelievers alone, is this: ‘I’m afraid that may be exactly what He does do.’ If you don’t want to enter the house of God, be prepared to stay outside. Oh, and, since God is all that exists, there IS nothing outside. And that is what Hell is.
(N.B Although God may be all forgiving, He only forgives those who _want_ forgiveness.)

@ motherh666: “Fuck God” because if he exists then it’s all his fault, I’m not that bothered about religion because the religious are just human sheep, they’re not really worth wasting my curses on.

Listen, ‘religion’ is a stab in the dark. I would never devote my life to something like that. At the end of the day, things we don’t know, we just don’t know, hence the world is not flat. I would not nescessarily deny any particular belief, but as far as I’m concerned, Christianity ranks alongside the cult that thinks that sausages are going to reclaim the land as their own in some sort of massive purple onion, rising from the ashes of a thousand burning parsnips. Umm… anyway, my point is, don’t ask what is going to happen after we die, because nobody knows, but if you wait long enough you might just find out. Or, if you’re really curious, start burning parsnips.

@ Misanthropologist: What could this ‘nothingness’ be, then? Just an eternity spent floating in a void?

Understandably, you’re slightly missing the point (wow, that’s not _supposed_ to be patronising!:o). Nothingness can’t ‘be’ anything. If it could, then it would be _something_. I guess the best way to think about it is by analogy with the Sun. All life on Earth depends upon the sun. Nourishment for plants, to feed animals, to feed bigger animals, etc. Even in the depths of the ocean, apparently, everything depends indirectly on the sun. BEsides the warmth that it gives, it also stops the Earth from hurtling randomly through space and hitting abigger rock… Experiencing the total absence of the sun isn’t the same as simply staying indoors with the curtains closed. It’s not the same as living in a cave deep underground. It’s not the same as night-time. In a dark cave, deep underground, with the curtains closed ;) there would still be indirect experience of the Sun. What we take for granted is dependent on the sun.
So, the argument goes, The absence of God isn’t just the absence of Heaven, or Angels, or Churches, or Christians ;).
The Satanic Hordes are supposedly in perpetual pain in Hell, not because God is stoking the fires beneath them, but _entirely_ by virtue of the fact that he is ignoring them.
Another example: you’re out in space, doing a space walk, and you say to your space suit ‘Space suit, I don’t believe in you.’ The space suit says ‘fine, I know where I’m not wanted’, and leaves you there… ;) You will suffocate, your blood will boil, AND you will freeze to death. Not through cruelty, but because that’s what YOU _wanted_…
