There are four mighty members of Therapy?
1.Andy J Cairns.. the bloke with the occasional beard and belly (lead)
2.Michael Mckeegan.. the one the birds go for (bass)
3.Martin MaCarrick..Plays a funky cello
4.Graham Hopkins.. the baby drummer boy

the first two are original members graham and martin joined up for the semi-detached album before that Fyfe Ewing was the drummer he had a big dick allegidly!

hey widgibob,

you are right, but did you notice that you can see and hear martin also on earlier gigs, so he is just officially a band member since semi-detached.

But when I saw them live there was only 3 of them; Andy, Graham and Michael. Does Martin not tour with them or was it just that tour?
(Sp-YF tour)

Martin is the second guitarist, why do they need a second guitarist? I know stuff about music, and usually you only need one guitar, and maybe a rhythm guitarist (and obviously a bass). Is he the rhythm guitarist then? Or do the two guitars just play exactly the same thing in unison, to make it louder or something? Please, someone know the answer, otherwise it’s just another pointless question to annoy the hell out of me.

Martin has taken a lot of the pressure of Andy since he joined. also the second guitar adds a great deal of depth to the live performance. You only have to hear tracks like Nowhere and Die Laughing live and compare them with when the band were a 3 piece.

martin played o infernal love, and i think he was maybe involved in troublegum as well, but became an actuall member in the wilderness between infernal and semi. he’s been playing live with them since troublegum/ infernal as well i think, he probably wasn’t there when white psycho saw them bcos at one point on the spyf tour he had a motorcycle accident or something and broke his legs. He’s not just a rythem guitarist, there are times when he plays something different to andy, but there are also times when he plays the same, which layers the music and gives it more texture in it’s sound. i think his sister may also have been on either infernal or troublegum as well.

A lot of songs on Troublegum and before had 2 guitars (nowhere even 3?), so I guess it was only a question of time until they wished for a 2nd guitarist.

Barbie wrote:

Yeah, but they didn’t need a 2nd guitarist. You can just play that part over the other tracks when you record it. The only time they’d need another guitarist is for live performances, which, I guess, are pretty important. Still, some bands just get random different guitarists to play their live gigs for them.

A 2nd guitar can add more depth to a song. One could play a basic rhythem while the other plays the more complex tune part of the song.

I don’t know if people have noticed that (maybe it’s just my idea), but i think that in some tracks in Semi Detached and Suicide Pact, the second guitar is just making some noise in the background. It’s not contributing to the song, i get the feeling sometimes that they put it there just for the sake of having two guitars. To me, some songs are just better off with one guitar, it ‘s not nesessary (by the way, how the fuck do i spell this word?) to have two or even three guitars.

Therapy? have actually performed as a five piece.
I saw them at T in the Park in 95 and as well as a lovely young lady on cello they also had a saxaphone player.
Martin took over cello dutys later on in the tour.
The versions of Opal Mantra and Stop it… that were played with martin on cello on that tour were amazing!!!

I don’t think their guitar sound has changed for the better since Martin joined. Overall I think they were a better, a lot tighter band (both live and on records) when they were just three and Fyfe was in the band..

Well, I think they rule in both compositions. I like the ‘threesome’ albums Troublegum, Caucasian Psychosis, and the other ones, but I also like Semi-Detached a lot. I’m not too fond with SP-YF, but that’s a matter of personal taste. The new stuff I heard sounds great. Besides, Martin’s presence was already important on Infernal Love, so they could be considered a quartet as from Infernal Love.
Maybe they should do more with the cello, it gives a really strange, but cool effect to the songs, don’t you think?

when i first heard the new version of diane, i thought they’d absoltly ruined it, but now i relly love it! the speed cello bit over the line ‘you’re the cutest… with my knife’ is amazing

I remember an interview with Andy circa Troublegum, he said that if the band were to expand it would be with the addition of a cello, rather than the traditional second guitar.

It’s interesting that a lot of the songs played live on the Infernal Love tour were re-arranged to include cello.

Since becoming an official member of T? Martin plays a lot less cello (two or three songs), and has become basically a ‘traditional second guitarist’.

Yeah, I think it’s nice that t? have a cellist cos most bands have boring instruments. I play violin,..and guitar…and piano, so therapy?, if you’re looking for a new member…Oh, and white psycho, I was asking if martin was just for live performances. Cos for recording purposes they wouldn’t need him. I don’t think it’s bad and I never did. It’s better than silverchair anyway, daniel does everything and they have to get other people in to do the voiceovers in life performances. That sucks.

in a live situation, 2 guitars is better than 1. listen to 1995 live bootlegs, then listen to a 1996 or after bootleg. the sound is 10 tomes better!
