Yesterday i finally got the opportunity to see Therapy? live for the first time ever. After an hour and a half drive i finally made it to Club Laga. Upon entering the lobby, i couldnt beleive it when i saw the members of Therapy?(minus andy) selling Therapy? t-shirts and talking to people. I didnt know what to make of it- never did i think that meeting Therapy? would be as easy as this.
Dimstar33- a local punk band opened, and they put on a good show but the band that went on after them- United 51, a punk-pop band, were weak to say the least. After hashing out a stash of tuneless punk-pop songs, they called it a night- setting the stage for the mighty Therapy? to take over.
While the opening bands were on stage, i ventured back to the t-shirt booth and i saw Andy Cairns himself over there! This was way beyond anything i ever imagined; i just stared at him from a distance for a while, but finally found the courage to approach him.
I went up to him and after introducing myself- i was speechless. A guy who’s record i had been listening for years and all i could do was stand there awestruck. Andy was really cool though- i’ve yet to meet someone so down to earth and polite. I got his autograph and after talking to him for a while , i split.
There were only about 50-100(nowhere near hundred)people in a club that could have held way more. Therapy? put on a mighty performance. They opened with Church of Noise and the place exploded. Most of the songs they performed were from thier later albums, but they still did play out some of the fans favorites- Screamager(no points for guessing), was one of them:)
During Potatoe Junkie, Andy took the opporunity to introduce his bandmates. He let the audience know that Micheal had been guilty of ‘sexually assualting sheep’ in Northern Ireland and Graham used to be a ‘construction worker’ who did a real lousy job.
The highlight of the set was Punishment Kiss. They played it to the surprise of many. Upon the one minute mark into the song when that killer riff comes in- the audience went beserk-it was as good as live music got.
Later on in the set, Andy told the audience that he’d been hearing ‘boy-bands were flirting with rock music in America’ and all he wanted to do was ‘shove his guitar up thier —- ——-,’ the place cheered.
After an hour or so of playing Therapy? left stage but came back for an encore. Andy asked the audience what songs they wanted to hear- out of the many requests they finally settled on Nausea and Knives. Many people were expecting teethgrinder too, but it didnt come about.
Overall it was a brilliant performance- one of the best i’ve ever seen. The only dissappointing aspect of the show were the audience- apart form a handful of die-hard Therapy? fans, many of those present, stood there with thier arms folded. (oh well, their choice).
Therapy? will be playing in Cleveland later on today and i’m leaving in a while to go see em:) Oh yea for those who were at the pittsburgh gig-i was the guy with the bandana going beserk in front of the stage:)! Hope you all make it to Cleveland. Peace.
