manics april uk tour

Started by not_that_kind_of_guy (a story on the radio) in Other Bands & Artists

fresh from failing to sell out any large venues this past december and desperate to promote the new awful album “lifeblood” the manics will be playing some smaller than usual shows in april:

April 03: Southampton Guildhall
April 04: Derby Assembly Rooms
April 06: Wolverhampton Civic Hall
April 07: Swansea Brangwyn Hall
April 09: Liverpool Royal Court
April 11: Bristol Colston Hall
April 12: Cambridge Corn Exchange
April 14: Newcastle City Hall
April 15: Edinburgh Corn Exchange
April 17: Leeds University / Refectory
April 18: Hammersmith Apollo London

Even if the Manics were playing near me i don’t think i’d bother going to see them since Lifeblood came out i’ve really gone off them.

MSP singles are still charting really well and they were the most popular act at the Tsunami gig the other week, so I dont think they are finished yet. I’m loving the chance to see them in smaller venues personally.

i think this tour of smaller venues will make a big difference to the band. when they announced the december tour last year, even then, it was a tad presumptuous of them to assume people were still interested. with hindsight we now all know that no-one was interested. presumably because, no matter how “obsessive” their fans alledgedly are, they haven’t put out a good album in a long long time. however i think gb199 makes a very good point about not wanting them them split up. i don’t want them to split up either. but as to his point about therapy having less fans and still continuing, that’s true BUT therapy have never put out a truly dire album which the manics have consistently done since 1996. don’t misunderstand me here, i love the manics, i have done for a long time but they really will have to do something GOOD to keep me interested for much longer. and hopefully this tour will do that. xxx

“Know Your Enemy”, while not flawless, is far from being a bad album. “Ocean Spray”, “Found That Soul”, “His Last Painting”, etc. are great and diverse songs.
Now “Lifeblood” I had considered as a bad album myself at first, but it gets better with each listen. The current single “Empty Souls” in particular is one of their best tracks ever. “I Live To Fall Asleep”, “Glasnost” and “Cardiff Afterlife” are just 3 more songs that come to mind which are pretty good. No, the Manics aren’t inventing anymore, but they still write interesting music and lyrics.

I agree totally. If Elvis hadn’t been re-released the same week as Empty Souls, Manics would’ve been number 1 instead of number two - and it would have easily been the lowest selling number one single since sales figures were compiled. In fact, Empty Souls sold only just over HALF the figure of the existing worst-selling-number-one.
Add to that the fact that many people who bought it actually bought three copies (three formats), you may say that you can divide the sales figure by three to find out how many PEOPLE bought the single. Compare that to a big selling single in the 80’s say, when you bought just one 7” single, and, well, it’s a small fraction of the audience in comparison..

Sales figures don’t mean jack, but when a loyal fanbase is dwindling so rapidly, you must be doing something wrong..

I’m probably on my own on this one but… NO FUCKIN WAY! - its the only good Manics album…

At least they had something to say, and a bit of passion and energy in their music,
now they are just bland, you might as well be listening to the Lighthouse Family or Simply (d)Red(full)
