Message board updates announcement

#

Started by Teethgrinder (René Fennema) Administrator

Hey all,

I’ve been ‘offline’ for a week, because I both had the flu and a problem (lots of pain) with my upper jaw. I’m happy to have recovered from that, and as you may have noticed, I’ve posted some replies on the board again..

What I wanted to let you all know is that there are several updates of the message boards I’m working on (because of feedback from you!), which should be ready in about a week:

1. Protection against posting duplicate posts: this prevents duplicate posts from appearing when the submit button is clicked more than once.

2. Bug-fix: When you post a message you will return to the correct page of the discussion you came from.

3. Multipage links on each forum page: each discussion/thread which spans more pages has page-links behind its subject with which you can directly jump to, for example, the third page.

4. View all new/updated discussions link: this way you can see all new messages/replies of the entire message board on one page.

5. Update to my admin tool: an easier way for myself to move topics to another forum, in case it is posted in the wrong forum. This helps to keep the board as clear/clean as possible.

6. Easier access when you’re logged in: the situation now is that your username and password are remembered after visiting once, but you still have to click submit when you want to access your profile page, for example. This whole process of being logged in, and then doing stuff on the boards, will be improved, both in usability and speed!

Hope you like the updates which, like I said, should be here in about a week. If there are other things you would like to see improved to the message board system, don’t hesitate to let me know!

Cheers, Teethgrinder.

Thanks for the feedback..

Nausea, I know the vBulletin board system, and regularly keep an eye on both its features, and the features of the Ultimate BB. My opinion on a lot of the extra features is that they’re not very useful, and only make the board harder to understand for new users.

I could make all the features the other message boards have, I have enough experience for that, but my general rule is KISS. Of course there are some features that I will add to my message boards in the time to come as well, but I won’t switch to another message board, because I enjoy making it myself. That’s a large part of the fun of having my own website for me.

It may be an idea to enable html in the msg boards, although that might lead to some sick guys who post all kinds of strange pictures. I don’t know if there’s any way to prevent this?

I go on the Hole message board, it’s pretty but some of the people are really horrible. It took ages for them to warm towards me. I like this message board much better. Thank you Teethgrinder!

Michael - Using HTML on message boards is indeed tricky, but there are message boards out there which have some sort of pseudo-HTML code with very limited features. I’m thinking about making something like this here.

infernalover/hellbelly - These posts will be deleted as soon as I have the new stuff ready (almost!)

Nausea - No offense taken, simply explaining what my ideas are for this message board. Thanks for the nice words , and I will certanily look at other message boards for ideas. Cheers :-)

Barbie - You’re welcome! We like having you here, and I’m glad you enjoy yourself. I also like the way you write stuff. Keep coming back!

The updates are near completion, and will be online in the next few days. Thanks for the feedback! Cheers, Teethgrinder.

awesome! this is really great! i love the way it says to me in this window ‘if you’re not deekoi, click here.’ just in case! and the way you can go to the last page of a topic straight away! and i’m a senior member! do i get airmiles with that? oh, one thing though, under the each name where it says who said what and what their member satus is and how many posts they have made, the post counter doesn’t seem to be working. just so’s you kno! i like the new txt sizing as well, makes it better to look at, even though the message boards have been a thing of beauty for at least as long as i’ve been here. The way you can turn your signature on or off! wow!

this is awesome!

I’m glad you like the new stuff, guys!

Deek, the counters do work, but the number of messages posted which is displayed is always the total number of messages of a member. It’s not the number of messages posted up until that particular post you are looking at. Hope this makes sense :-)

Oh, and did you all check out the updated member profiles? There’s a lot more to come!

Ehm..what is GMT time?
It’s two hours behind ‘our’ dutch time?

Teethgrinder (René Fennema) Administrator wrote:

GMT stands for Greenwich Mean Time, which is the base of the world time zones as we know them. Taken from greenwichmeantime.com:

‘Why is Greenwich, England is the home of World Time?

The standard by which all World Time is set was agreed at the 1884 International Convention at Washington DC, USA placed Greenwich on the Prime Meridian (Zero Longitude).’

Since people from all over the world come here, I decided to adopt this standard on the messages boards. We (in Holland) are indeed at GMT+2 (GMT+1 in winter time).

One of the future improvements I want to add to the message boards is that everyone can set the time zone they are in, so that you can see all times relative to your own. Until then, it’ll be GMT for everyone!

Cheers!

Yes, I know about Greenwhich being sort of the ‘center’ of the world.
But I didn’t know we where 2 fuckin’ hours behind UK time?
That’s quite a lot…
Isn’t there a reverse on the clock in the UK?

at the moment i’m on gmt+1, but i only live about an hours drive from greenwich. although i spose this could be accounted for by british summer time being an hour in front, just the swap over wasn’t last week, it was a month or two ago, have you always set it directly from gmt?

Yes, the times were always relative to GMT, but I was sometimes too late with changing the offset due to the summer/winter time. Hope this makes sense..
