I’m more of a fan of sparta over Mars volta but the new MV album did blow me away. But ATDI were the best of both bands put together.

i know it’s a shame that invalid litter dept is not on it, but listening to it, and i must say; it gives a really great overview of the whole at the drive-in-madness as it was. the dvd that comes with it is nice too but nothing much special, cool to see the videos again though.

(the whole thing made me listen again to vaya; hiha and jippie-jeej!)

Does anyone like these 2 bands? at the moment they’re two of my favorite bands (only beaten by t?) I just love how different they make their music.

The new Mars Volta one is very patchy. And thats the finished copy sitting on my desk. It wasn’t going to beat Frances The Mute though, was it?

The new MV album is okay… it does take a few listens, but i do agree that Frances the mute is a better album. I do like the art work though:)

Fed up with logging online just to listen to Sparta’s “Taking Back Control” through streams or Myspace? You’re in luck! Sparta has released an MP3 of the single off the album Threes for your listening and downloading enjoyment. That’s right… this album is SO good that we want to give you the first single just to whet your appetite.

I’ve heard a few things off their new album..I can’t wait for it to come out. Their last album was just perfect in my opinion so they have a big thing to top, I do prefer them to mars volta.

The new Sparta album is a bit of a grower… when i first played it i was a bit disappointed as there is too many coldplay type influences going on.. which has alot to do with the singer being one chris martins best mates. The more i play it though the better it gets, it’s not a patch on the last album as it lacks the punch and big songs but it has some cool moments.. Taking back control is a cracking song.

At the Drive-In are one of my top 10 or so favorite bands of all time. They were awesome. But neither the Mars Volta or Sparta have been anything close on their own.

I think a big part of why ATD-I worked so well was the contribution from both sides balancing each other out.

The Mars Volta to me are like a ship with no anchor. They’re too artsy and need the conventional Sparta half to keep them from just drifting out to sea.

Sparta are more like a truck stuck in the mud. They’re spinning their wheels but not really going anywhere without the experimental Mars Volta side to pull them out.

But together, they have this perfect balance. They’re just experimental enough to be cutting edge but still conventional enough to be listenable.

I’ve bought all three Mars Volta albums just out of habit and because I like the guys in the band, but I just really can’t get into them aside from some of the stuff on Deloused in the Comatorium. And their live shows are downright painful to sit through. I’ve never seen a band that does so much improv. I saw them play for an hour and a half and only play 3 songs (that’s not an exaggeration; I can give you the songs they played). The rest of the time was spent jamming. That’s almost self parody there.

Sparta on the other hand play a standard set of songs but just kind of stand there and are rather boring and unanimated to look at.

Bleh, I don’t mean to get on a soapbox about this, but it just makes me sad when I look at both of those bands considering what kind of music the members used to make. I’m still holding out for an eventual ATD-I reunion. Even though I know it’s about as likely as a Faith No More reunion.
