Re: Metallica in Other Bands & Artists
Right - I’ve now heard all three new tracks and they’re all shit! Honest to god I don’t know how this band generates so much interest and argument anymore. I used to love them but the fact is they haven’t been relevant for 20 years! If anyone other than Metallica released those 3 new tracks they’d get nowhere. There any number of thrash bands about and they’re all releasing better tracks than that! An example - for a band from the same era the new Testament pisses all over what I’ve heard of Death Magnetic so far! I thought a while back that I’d love them to come up with something fantastic - to give a big ‘fuck you’ to the doubters (me included). Now I just wish they’d bugger right off!
Pish!

Re: Focus in Other Bands & Artists
Superb band. The current lineup is fantastic. If you get the chance go and see them. Saw them in Glasgow in March and they were probably one of the best live bands I’ve seen - Just brilliant!

Shawn Smith? in Other Bands & Artists
Any other fans on here?
Saw him last night in Edinburgh in his first ever UK gig - just Shawn and a piano. He played solo stuff, Brad and Satchel tracks and even had time to fit in Crown of Thorns by Mother Love Bone which was the highlight on the night for me.
Been listening to his stuff for years - didn’t think I’d get the change to see him play live.
Superb ;-)

Re: 2008 in music in Other Bands & Artists
New Opeth is what I’m ost looking forward to. A new T? would be great but only if it’s better than OCFA - I couldn’t handle that crippling disappointment again!

sounds interesting actually.. God knows how you would express something like that through music.
Give it a listen and find out :-)

Re: Concept Albums In General in Other Bands & Artists
Ayreon - The Human Equation
An oustanding piece of music which has loads of guest vocalists James LaBrie (Dream Theater), Mikael Åkerfeldt (Opeth), Devon Graves (Dead Soul Tribe), Devin Townsend (SYL).
A concept album about a man who has a car accident and ends up in hospital in a comatose state. The car accident was very bizarre: it was broad daylight and there was no other car in sight. His wife and his best friend are keeping a vigil at his bed, trying to understand what happened, hoping he will wake soon. Cut off from the outside world, the man finds himself trapped in a strange realm where his emotions- most of which he’s ignored for a long time- have come to life to confront him with all the choices he has made in his life. As he is taken from one memory to the next, he slowly becomes aware of all the events leading up to his accident, and realizes that if he ever wants to wake up from his coma, he must find a way out of his prison…
Sounds wanky but is honestly a fantastic piece of music :-)

Re: Album of the year? in Other Bands & Artists
Can’t believe I wrote ‘Dark Planet’ instead of ‘Blank Planet’.

Re: Album of the year? in Other Bands & Artists
Can’t decide really but so far the nominations are:
Riverside - Rapid Eye Movement
Porcupine Tree - Fear of A Dark Planet
Dream Theater - Systematic Chaos
Probably in that order aswell.

@ LuncayBooth - Why so? If you hate the band chances are your gonna hate the record so I just want to know how come you hate them?
I don’t hate them - as musicians thay all have an impressive back catalogue. I just think VR make horrible music.
They lack any real spark for me. It’s kind of music by numbers, unoriginal, generic, uninspiring, standard fayre which could have written by any number of 8th rate rock bands. There are hundreds of bands churning this shit out and most of them will never make it.
If you like them go enjoy but not for me.

Re: The Manics New Song in Other Bands & Artists
A poor album IMHO :(
There’s a couple of ‘good’ tracks, nothing great and some real duffers! There’s stuff on the Lipstick collection that are far better than some of the songs served up here. Your Love Alone is dreadful. I even turned off the radio this morning when it was played!
Can’t be bothered going into any more details on this one. I don’t like it and after repeated listens I don’t thnk I ever will!
Disappointed!

Re: Living Legends in Other Bands & Artists
Superunknown wrote:
Well, how do you define legend? For me he definitely is one.
I suppose this whole question really (as has been pointed out) is a metter of opinion. For me a legend is someone who is famous and universally admired because of something they’ve achieved in a particular area - be it sport or music.
In those terms, for me, Andy cannot be considered a legend. The mention of his name would lead to a blank look from most people if you asked them. He’s great at what he does - no doubt about that so I’m not knocking andy!
I’m not knocking anyone who has different criteria for identifying a legend but not for me.

Not made anywhere close to a big enough impact to be considered in this category. Great band - yes! Great fontman - yes! Legend - not for me!

Jerry Cantrell’s Degradation Trip - the 2CD version and not the trimmed down Road runner release is a fantastic double CD!

I would consider going to Glasgow - the only thing stopping me is the fact that when Therapy? supported them in Edinburgh - they were truly terrible!
