I’ve been thru some similar experiences and also saw guys who’s girls were leaving just like that- without an explanation. It’s very cruel and inhuman. Torture.

For .avi: VirtualDub (free)
For .mpg: TMPGENC+ (free, except the MPEG2 - but that’s crackable).

open tmpgenc -> file -> mpeg tools -> merge and cut.
That’ll work.
