Re: Any drummers out there?? in Musicians (Gear, Tabs & Lyrics)
Aye its not! Even the odd use here and there can be very effective. I’ve always thought that the little not-even-really-a-flurry in Clean My Wounds by COC is one of the best use of double pedal ever - its only there for second but as an accent its fucking class and its not a metal for the sake of it song is it???
What made you switch the Colin??

Re: Any drummers out there?? in Musicians (Gear, Tabs & Lyrics)
Colin? Do you mean you used a right handed setup and then switched to a left or that your playing open handed now on a right handed setup? As for the picking up double bass quicker thats just down to the person, not possible to say whether you would or wouldn’t. When you say its broken do mean the drum or the pedal? If its a broken pedal I’d get any form of pedal ASAP and stop using your toes to play! :p Or do you mean investing in having two basseseseses?
If anyone want any more rambles, just fire the question over! :)

Re: Any drummers out there?? in Musicians (Gear, Tabs & Lyrics)
Dennis, I think Mr Lambardo calls that his “cruise control” position if i remember rightly :)
I think I started off by telling myself that I COULD play “Demanufacture” and went from there - no exact recollection other than that. I just listen to things and tab them, then work on playing them with just my feet. Also applying concepts to it - “lets reverse the pattern from hands to feet and the feet to the hands” - reggae is a very sparse version of such a reversal I suppose (asuming that is, that we all go with the straight bass snare in 4/4 approach to begin with) with the snare on 1 and 3 and the bass on 2 and 4 but some busier material will really make you think about it.
Splitting rudiments between hands and feet is a good one for coordination and control as is “cyclical” playing - kind of linear pattern approach - try splitting single stroke rolls into RH LH LF RF and other combos like that - hours of “fun”!
Oh, also flipping stuff you already know is good for building the lesser used bass drum foot - I remember doing that with Stories and Epilepsy when I was learning to use my left foot on the bass drum.
Other than that - go and see one of my friends ;) http://www.drumsense.com
Oi! Wake up the lot of you!!!!!

So Colin, whatcha gonna be going for?

Re: Drum Kits in Musicians (Gear, Tabs & Lyrics)
No no man, not you. I just meant whichever guy was telling Colin that Sabian arn’t the way was well out - Colin shouldn’t listen to people like who say that things are so clear cut, we know they never are. Its more a case of advice and then him going trying some and seeing what he likes within his budget and go with that - I didn’t mean you guys on here were slagging any brand/make/producer of cymbal, sorry if thats what you thought I was saying. I was meaning we WoMbles were right and not to believe the other guy just because he works in a music shop.
Moneywise - I used a large part of my student loan on my kit rather than books and now I get an endorsee rate on Zildjians so its that bit easier for me.
Wow, repeated myself alot there! Oh well!
:D

Nah, its just personal taste. I’m all Zildjian but I wouldn’t say everyone should use them or that any other makes were crap.

I read an article the other day saying Danny Carrey uses two of those Neumanns on each drum when recording, oh to be rich! :)

Re: Drum Kits in Musicians (Gear, Tabs & Lyrics)
Gotta agree with you there Joe, not heard anyone else have a sound like that. Then again people have a go at Lars these days because its fashionable to do so - no thinking required when you’re just repeating the same old line time and time again, even if they don’t have the first clue about drumming. Its abit old now isn’t it? Maybe they should find something better to do their time.
Personally I’d love one of those big meaty Bell Brass Snares - I tried one abit back it was huuuuuuuge!

Re: Drum Kits in Musicians (Gear, Tabs & Lyrics)
You mean like a second hand Pearl Export maybe Mr Thumper?
I’d say head for something down that line - I didn’t and yeah did regret it. Blew the best part of my student loan on my current kit though, who needs textbooks! ;)
Have a good look round the net to get some ideas. I just found a decent sounding Mapex setup with cymbals for £300 so who knows what you might find.

i made this ring for my old drumset (snare) as well.. its the best method you could imagine. it really helps
did you make one yourself or did you cut one from the fur?
i once did make some of paper but i think their weight was to lightly..
Mine came with the snare when I bought it, its pretty much the same material as the skin and sits nicely most of the time - the odd bad hit has taken it off a few times though, especially live!
@ Tubthumper - good man on the Anger bit ;)

Re: drum tuning anyone? in Musicians (Gear, Tabs & Lyrics)
Sorry, I missed out a bit on the snare - I do have a dampening ring round the top to reduce the overtones a little, could help the gabbling maybe?

How long have you had the heads on the kicks? If not long it could be a tuning issue. Are the kicks wide open or do you have anything in them to dampen? If you think that your heads are worn out and you want more resonance, don’t cut a hole in the new one.You will get kick back from the air not being able to escape but you’ll get used to it and you will also get a fuller tone.If you change the batter may I recommend the Aquarian Superkick 2 or 3.I can’t remember which one i use but they are great heads.
I’ve got the huge holed things on at the min - Ulrich style looking things. I got the second bass well after the first and ordered a new skin to match the first one on the day I picked it up. They got the wrong one in  but a gig on the same night meant I took it and matched them - vain I know - but to the second one. Don’t get me wrong, they sound mint as they are, tonnes of attack and a fair amount of resonance to it, but I’d just like them both to sound like the first one did with the first resonant on it - huuuuuuuuuuuuuge! I have them wide open as well but thats just because I think it suits the oak. :D

@heysatan: you can bore me, but just if your tips are really usefull and pretty short. i hate reading 100 pages and afterwards it all wasnt worth it… i already did that a few times
Not all mine I hope! ;)
Short ‘n’ sweet version;
Clear Remo ambassadors for all tom skins.
10”
Batter - Tight, but not pulling-the-shell-in-on-itself tight
Resonant - Medium keeps lots of the tone to balance off the high “pop” of the batter
12” Both - Medium, works with the natural tone of the drum and decent gap pitch wise down from the 10”
14” Batter - Just slightly more than finger tight on the lugs - deep and booming as fuck for double stops and the like.
Resonant - Just under medium, keeps it from getting sloppy with the batter being down so low.
Snare - both tight to get the crack out of it.
Emperor pinstripe top and ambassador bottom
Basses - all medium tension
Powerstroke 3s for the batter, not sure on the resonants but I’m looking at changing them soon, the holes are abit too big and don’t hold enough resonance for my liking anymore.
Short enough? :D

Re: Kits of the World in Musicians (Gear, Tabs & Lyrics)
I’ve got a 17” A Custom crash on the left! :D
My upcoming additions arn’t really drums or cymbals, its more Pro Tools to use with them. However it will make up for the fact that I’ve not bought anything more than sticks this year.
Oh and Gemil - find those bass drums dimensions or continue to be shamed! Maybe… :p :D
Heres the result of getting quite bored the other week while waiting not 1, not 2 but 3.5 hours for the bloody guitarist to turn up…I took some silly, and quite often out of focus pics (and I thought it was just the hangover that made me see them that way) should anyone care.

Re: hardware… in Musicians (Gear, Tabs & Lyrics)
Can’t help I’m afraid- all my old gears been sold to help fund the new.
Just a thought though- could you not claim something else on the insurance worth say, 2 grand, and go ater Neil’s gear? My mate once claimed the insurance on a Tag watch his parents got him for his 21st when his cymbals got nicked on tour and he needed to replace them.
It could work, maybe ;)
