Re: pick-up potting in Musicians (Gear, Tabs & Lyrics)

waxing (or potting, whatever) will most likely do the trick. If the pickup coil is too loose it´ll start resonate and will squeal. The wax “glues” the coil and it stays still and quiet.
The operation ain´t that hard as one may think. I´ve done some single coil strat PUs myself and waxed them all.
Wax is melt in a jar that lies in boiling water. When the wax is liquid then simply dip the pickup and leave it there for a while. The only risk is that if the pickup lies too long in the hot wax it may melt the insulation on the coil wire.
Also the cavity shieldings should be done as Misanthropologist said. One can use the metal tape or conductive paint.
All the accessories one might need should be found at

Re: Your Amps - Your Sound in Musicians (Gear, Tabs & Lyrics)

Scooped mids yeah. But for me it sounds a bit poor when one plays with a band. I think that guitar should be in the middle cos there´s not much stuff there otherwise.
I use a marshall JCM-800 (tubes for me too please) and I turn the mids up and keep bass and treble about in half. I ride in trough an overdrive pedal using a lot of output level and not that much drive. By turning up the pre amp volume I search the point where good dynamic distortion comes in and then turn master up super loud. In solos I just kick on the wahwah and turn it in a position where I get a nice bite and kick it off back again when my moment is over. All this is commanded by a tele or strat equipped with a humbucker and a heavy set of strings. And remember that guitar should be played more like a percussion. Hit it hard!
This works for me perfectly. But I have to say, we´re playing Motorhead covers.

Re: andy’s new amps… in Musicians (Gear, Tabs & Lyrics)

I haven´t seen them myself yet but the new amps should be Framus Cobra heads and cabinets. Or that´s what I´ve been told.

If the cobra won´t bite you the Lector will indeed so be careful out there.

Re: Help me pick a rig in Musicians (Gear, Tabs & Lyrics)

Behringer 4x12 cab will beat many of those “legendary” marshall cabinets made in 80´s and after. Some of those series that marshall made then and now are real poor sounding. Not all but some.
Theres so many guitarists that play trough a bad cabinet because they think that if it says Marshall it´s good. I say go with the Beringer. Low price meets a decent quality there. And if you don´t wanna have a Marshall anyway you don´t have a problem with the logo.
Still I must say I´m all the way a Marshall man myself. But for an amp try out the Crate Blue Voodoo head if you can. You might like that one.

Re: What happened to Lector? in General Therapy? Topics

It´s not a Gibson. It´s Lector, SG style handmade guitar. Mahogany body, maple neck, ebony fretboard. Pickups are EMG HZ´s with ceramic magnets.

Some pictured details at not so pro site:

Re: What happened to Lector? in General Therapy? Topics

Yeah that´s me, The Lector and the maker of the guitar named the same.
I came up with the guestionmark inlays on the fretboard and Gemil on the headstock. I was kind of pain in the ass asking every single detail for the guitar but Andy trusted in my advice on many things. He wanted the colour to be black as he said:
“I don´t wanna fuck with the classics.”
Originally it was ment to be a Les Paul style guitar, but then Andy came back playng SG´s again so he preferred that model.
There was some troubles with the bridge (talla).
Andy´s using a very heavy set of strings and he really doesn´t play with a gentle touch so one string slipped over.
As the holes on the pieces of the bridge that the strings come over (huh!) are quite small, that happened. I saw what was going on and ran backstage and used some needle files to make the holes a bit larger. And also missed a part of the show. :(
But the guitar made it back on stage for couple of the last numbers. And as Andy has told me the guitar has survived the tour and found a home at his place. Big thanks for that to Arto at Smartcase, who made a great flightcase for the guitar.

Re: What happened to Lector? in General Therapy? Topics

Don´t know really.
One possibility is that the brand new guitar hasn´t been “played in” and won´t work as well as some that´s been played a lot.
One is that it´s not quite good. Even I can make mistakes. ;)
Mr. C. told me that the guitar was great and it was used a couple of times during the tour.
I saw some pics here at wall of mouths taken in Oslo and there it was in use.
But who knows. Maybe we will be informed more in the future.
