Re: Beatles Reissues in Other Bands & Artists

Ah, it’s all on youtube.

Well worth a look, in my opinion.

(Penny lane modulation at 4.15 of part three, BTW.)

I think the early poppy stuff is deceptive - it seems simple but really it’s not.

Did anyone see the Howard Goodall programme about the Beatles’ songwriting? I was largely indifferent to them before watching it (and I still wouldn’t consider myself a fan, now), but holy fuck you’ve got to give credit where it’s due for the songwriting. Goodall took Penny Lane as an example, and compared how any other band would have played/written it, with how The Beatles did (it has something like 12 different key modulations going through it). He played it through on the piano both with and without the modulations, and it was a subtle but really impressive difference.

Re: Ipod/MP3 player game thingy in Other Bands & Artists

Hmm, I think there’s the makings of a new online music game right there!

Re: What’s everyone never going to listen to again? in Other Bands & Artists

:p

@Hooch: i’ve just checked, and the answer is yes, it was. ;) If I remember correctly, my core argument was essentially that the sublime is a phenomenon which suggests to us knowledge of things that in fact have no discernable existence. Therefore the core argument of my dissertation was sublime. ;)

Re: What’s everyone never going to listen to again? in Other Bands & Artists

Rationally, I think it’s perfectly acceptable. Empirically, I’d say it’s not. Phenomenologically, I’d say something is definitely amiss, but I’m not prepared to commit to defining what it is.

You sure? ‘philosophical holier than thou numpty’ was my nickname at school. That’s why I thought maybe I should study philosophy. :s

Re: What’s everyone never going to listen to again? in Other Bands & Artists

I think it’s perfectly valid to listen to them just once and then say ‘no no no no no!’

*ponders*

I resolve to listen to the above-mentioned link.

That oughta cover it. :)

Re: What’s everyone never going to listen to again? in Other Bands & Artists

A question: do I have to listen to it once, just so I can never lsiten to it again? :s

Not a very well known figure, in fact very few people know him as the man behind Robinsons cordial…

Robinson’s not that cordial. I said ‘hello’ to him once and he told me to fuck off.

I think it might have been. I definitely remember chatting with you about Murder Ballads.

Re: NEW GAME I name a song, you name a BETTER song… in Other Bands & Artists

Oh, it’s simple!
You can’t have Yesterday, by the way: the number of letters don’t add up to a prime number. You should have waited until tomorrow, when the Saturday rules apply.

Basically the same rules, but, as well as naming a song that begins with the last letter of the previous song, you also have to think it’s better than the previous song

@3ddo:It doesn’t have to be better than all the other songs, only the one that went before it. In which case I expect Enjoy The Struggle probably is better than Dan’s choice. ;)

Re: NEW GAME I name a song, you name a BETTER song… in Other Bands & Artists

@3ddo: I stand corrected, two years later. :D
I don’t think I know Dan’s choice, so I couldn’t say what’s better than it. :s

@Roy: You’d have made a more convincing defence if you hadn’t described it as a) shambling and b) their worst album. ;)
