Re: Gracious me… in Chit-Chat
Well, your tongue looks, fairly healthy, all told, but the fact that you carry it around in your purse is probably a bad sign.
Here are some amusing novelty chocolates in the shape of willies. They’re modelled on Dan’s willy, in fact. There’s 100g of choclate here, made into 200 true-to-life willies.

Yeah, The Hanson Brothers are named after the characters in Slapshot, but since it’s a film starring Paul Newman, I thought maybe that was your starting point. :)

You can also just hit the ‘x’ next to the thread on the main page, and you’ll never even know it’s there.

lack of memory is no defence. I don’t remember Dresden, but do you think any court would accept that?

Re: Studying Drums (Charlie Has A New Idea) in Chit-Chat
Give it your best. I know someone who studied guitar in Guildford, and so far as I know he had absolutely no regrets doing it. Last time I saw him he was making a small fortune giving lessons (guitar lessons; he didn’t give it all up to be a primary school teacher).

That’s not applause, that’s Dettol, though it’s still a pretty impressive party trick.

Re: What’s everybody reading in Chit-Chat
I’m glad you posted that link, as I had no idea he’d written anything close to full length. The book I had was The Nightmare Factory, which is I think the Teatro Grottesco collection and another collection in one book. I see there’s a graphic novel now with the same title, though, so it’ll be harder to pick up another copy.
This is the one I had:
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Nightmare-Factory-Thomas-Ligotti/dp/07867 … amp;sr=8-3
:o £180?! I really should ask for that back!

I meant to bump this thread a while ago to tell WOMbles about this guy:

He’s kind of like a modern HP Lovecraft. Was trying to get something by him for ages, and one of his books was finally published in the UK a couple of months ago (Teatro Grottesco) and it didn’t disappoint
I absolutely love Thomas Ligotti’s stuff. Some of the imagery is so surreal and amazing “Dr Voke and Mr Veech” always particularly sticks out in my mind. Incidentally I’m trying to get something by him, too: I lent out a collection of stories to one of my philosophy lecturers, and he never gave it back. :’(

But it DOES usually happen! When is the last time you can think of the elected party having more votes than the competition? Not that it matters since nobody really votes any more so it’s all a bit of a joke.
Maybe I’ve completely misunderstood, but it seems what you’re describing is a hung parliament? If so, they don’t usually happen. Wiki says the last one was in 1974. But as I’ve said, maybe I misunderstood.

Anyhow what is this single transferrable vote? Is it a spin on proportional representation? If so I have to say I’m all for the theory and it’s very democratic, but would anything actually ever get done? I don’t think so - although not doing anything would probably be a very good idea at the moment. I might even start my own party and promise not to fuck about getting involved in global politics. i think people would love that :)
I guess it’s related to propertional representation, but it’s not the same thing. Basically, at the moment, if you don’t want labour to win, you have to vote conservative (and vice versa), which means that the apparent popularity of the opposition is higher than it really is, which inspires other voters who don’t want conservatives to win to also vote the opposite way (which may not reflect who they DO want to win). The result is everyone is voting _against_ who they don’t want in power, no matter who they actually do. With an STV, you vote for who you want to win, but have a back up option. (So you could say ‘I want the Green Party in charge, but in the unlikely event that they don’t get enough votes, I want to vote Lib Dem. ANd if they don’t get enough votes, then I guess I’ll go with Labour.’
The outcome is still ‘No Vote for Conservative’, and, in all probability, Labour still in power, but the picture is much clearer who everyone is actually supporting.
That probably didn’t make any sense. :(

Re: George Bush in Chit-Chat
“Your second post is closer to what I meant”
But I think the point Gav was making is that that doesn’t usually happen, rather than the winning party “almost certainly” having less votes than the combined. When we get anything close to the Lib Dems actually being ‘kingmakers’, then they’re supposedly going to push for the single transferrable vote. Which can only be a good thing, as far as I’m concerned.

Re: Squall has a new job ! in Chit-Chat
Actually I’m with Squall on this one, at least up to a point. Fair enough you wouldn’t go into interviews saying ‘No, I don’t give a shit about whatever you thnk your company’s [air quotes]’work ethic’[/air quotes] is, and frankly I’ll just be doing the bare minimum to avoid getting fired’, but if you have problems with something like panic attacks (as I do, actually), it shouldn’t be glossed over. Similarly if you had an allergy to cats, and you were told ‘this job might involve lots of working with cats, is that going to be a problem?’ you’d be a moron to say ‘no, no problem at all.’
But still: comb your fucking hair next time, Squall. ;)
