At the risk of standing nearby with lighterfluid, trying not to look conspicuous, I’m also interested what you disagree about. Tatty is essentially right. Though it is the bass that is active, the active circuitry makes the sound more dynamic. Using more than one amp also makes the sound more dynamic. So, in that sense, using two amps does make the sound more ‘active’. This is particularly true when you dial different frequencies into each amp.
I’m not saying that it’s instantly better or anything, though, and I’m not saying anything about Michael’s tone in particular.

Mmm, on a a similar subject, I’ve met loads of people who have never heard of T?, but I have never met anyone who had that actually didn’t like them. The worst was something like: “Therapy? Yeah, they’re pretty cool, I suppose.”

So my twisted logic is that if everyone had heard of them, everyone would like them… Not sure that’s a good thing, but it does put in my mind the idea of Therapy Missionaries, travelling the world, and spreading the word. Doing the Good Bands’ work…

The second time I saw T? was at Donnington, when they were on the main stage, and WIldhearts and Terrorvision were both on the tiny baby stage. Undoubtedly the best three bands of the day.

I heard someone describe something the other day as Steaming Rose Fodder. I think that’s a great name for a band. ;)

My bass is actually a Danelectro Rumour (you may laugh if you wish, but petty name calling is beneath me…) I actually really like it. It looks good, and has a pretty good neck, though perhaps a little too ‘clicky’ to be ideal. I’m saving up at the moment to get some active eq for it, but at the rate I’m going it’ll probably take me a few years! It’s funny, because it’s made out of a really cheap wood (basically hardboard..), but it is so light that I actually prefer it that way. It’s got quite good resonance, all things considered. If you don’t know what they look like (and they don’t make them anymore) they’re _very_ similar to the Mosrite guitars (see the thread about Andy’s white guitar). I bought it initially because it was cheap, but given the choice for swapping it for a guitar worth twice the price I would stick with it.

Incidentally, I want to make a new scratchplate for it. When I get the EQ, it’ll mean drilling an extra hole in it, so I’d rather keep the original intact. I also don’t like plain white scratchplates. Does anyone know anywhere in Britain that will make them up for you? Failing that, any suggestions for the best material to make one myself?

It’s all swings and roundabouts, really, as far as I’m concerned. There are some technically bad players out there who are very good musicians. Not just that they’re happy doing what they’re doing, but they’re good at it, just not in a necessarily technical way.

I agree it’s frustrating when players say that a particular technique is ‘boring’ when what they really mean is that they can’t play like that/ can’t be arsed to make the effort to learn it. As a personal defence, I’m more interested in making the effort in other areas. I think it would probably be a mistake for me to move away from guitar, only to end up practicing righthanded tapping on the bass! I could have done that before, but that’s not why I switched.

I once knew a really decent guitarist, good all round (all round Metal, that is ;) ). Excellent rhythm control, full on blazing solos, restraint when he wanted it. He could play along with anything just by ear. But he didn’t know any scales, and only the most basic chord names. He could play it all fine, he just didn’t know what any of it was called! His answer to any question about what he was playing was: ‘er, it’s SOME of the notes of the chromatic scale. But not all of them…’ :cool:

As for technique, I’m not _quite_ sure I followed what you were saying, Tatty (if I may call you Tatty). It doesn’t matter to me which finger I _start_ on, just starting each beat (or every other beat) with the _same_ finger helps(not necessarily the first), and that is possible using the sequence that I do. That’s what I was trying to say, anyway, though I agree that total independence is the dream to aspire to. :)

Strangely I don’t find skipping two strings any more difficult than one, but since that’s hard enough as it is with 3/4 fingers I don’t suppose it counts as a success!

The problem with triplets is why I do the alternating thing. Because you’re always moving from one picking finger to an adjacent one, you don’t end up with that gallop effect. Plus each ‘sequence’ is of eight notes, so you always start the beat with the same finger.

I’ve never played with a pick, (tried it, obviously, but didn’t like it) and I’ve only played with two fingers for about a year now… so everything feels like beginning. ;)

I love it when people ask how long I’ve been playing for, and I tell them about a year, and they’re really impressed (NB. I’m not actually that good), but what I don’t tell them is that I’ve been playing guitar for about ten years, so a lot of the stuff I kind of knew already… ;)

There’s only two things (on guitar _or_ bass) that I can fingertap, and that’s only one-finger tapping. I just have to accept defeat, I think.

Hi there. I can sometimes play with three fingers of my picking hand. I do need more practice, especially with string skipping, which is practically impossible for me at the moment. Do you just use the three fingers in the same order all the time? like (first finger=i, second=m, third=a): imaimaima ? because I find it easier, and more effectice, to do it this way: imimamami (I think anyway, it’s harder to write than to do ;) ) you can even do it with four fingers quite easily like that (still no string skipping, though!) l=little(!) imimamalalama.

or I could just write it like this: 1232343432321 ! Possibly not as quick as using the three or four fingers in order, but less difficult to synchronise, and definitely faster than just two.
