Re: Pearl Jam’s Rock Around Barrack (or is it Barrack Around The Clock)? in Other Bands & Artists
the only thing I;ve seen is Eddie Vedder’s song for the Chicago Cubs…who could get swept out of the playoffs tonight. They better hope that luck doesn’t spread to O’Bama

Re: Metallica in Other Bands & Artists
I’ve listened to more of the album. Have to say it’s definitely better than anything they’ve done this century (not saying much there). If it came out right before or after the Black album, I’d probably be more impressed. Unfortunately I can’t help thinking how derivative they sound now. That’s what happens when you take 3-4 years between albums and go back to your roots instead of doing something new. You start sounding like a clone of yourselves.
Perhaps this a perfect illustration why T? has never done Troublegum 2.
Maybe it’s just my copy, but I’m a little disappointed in the mix. The drums don’t hit like they should.
Popped it in the car and cranked it up, and was a bit disappointed. The guitars were fine, but the drums and bass were a little muddled.
The Black and Load albums had much better production value.
Bands need to get over the digital studio trend. Yeah it’s cheaper…but it’s true “You get what you pay for”. This is a broader criticism than this album and can be leveled at our boys T? as well. Albini is right!
Here’s a few other observations.
“The End of the Line” has a big riff in it, that I couldn’t help but start singing “Animal” from Pearl Jam.
And although I loved it, the solo break in “Broken Beat and Scarred”, sounded like the best Megadeth clone I’ve heard…a little bit too close to “Hanger 18”
As a matter of fact, quite a few of the solos sound a little Dave Mustaine-ish too me. Seems like Kirk was trying too hard to do Kill ‘Em All, and it sounds kind of mechanical,
“Insert Riff 1-A here” instead of spontaneous and inspired.
I will say, I enjoyed some of the harmonized leads. They picked there spots well for them.
Overall though… I will say it’s an enjoyable thrash album. Again would be much better 10 years or so ago. Where now it sounds too much where they took the best bits from older songs/ albums and repackaged them.
I think they’ve peaked. And if this is what we can expect, they should not take 4-5 years to deliver.
It’s time for them to collaborate with Mustaine. Maybe the tension between them would create something truly interesting.
Criticisms aside, I’d actually recommend this to others. And it’s going to get more plays than their last 3 albums combined.
I think I’ll go ahead and order the vinyl.
Solid workmanlike album…but not a masterpiece. B+

Re: Metallica in Other Bands & Artists
I’ve heard three songs so far “The Day that never comes” , “Cyanide”, and “My Apocalypse”…all I can say is not terrible but more “Been there…heard that”
“The Day That Never Comes” Is Unforgiven 3 with a bit of “Where it Bleeds” and “One”.
“My Apocalypse” is another Load type simple riff…gets old
“Cyanide” does have a nice solo, the rhytm behind it sounds like they’ve been listening to “5 Magics”. Probably would have liked it better in 1992
Again not terrible, but not going to be worth the hype it will enevitably come. And considering how long it took to put out, they’re best days are behind them. They’re definitely behind the curve now.
Best thing I can say, is that Kirk put the wah away for a bit.

Re: Sub Pop in Other Bands & Artists
would be cool to see Green River. I have a PJ bootleg where mudhoney opened and then late in the PJ show they did a mini-reunion. It was great. But that was 1993

Re: What’s EveryOne Listening To in Other Bands & Artists
Got some fresh vinyl the last 2 days been listening to that.
Metallica- Master of Puppets 2LP 45RPM- awesome! They done a great job with these, Kill ‘Em All and Ride the Lightning are great also.
Deep Purple- Machine Head
Weezer- Pinkerton (cranks much better than CD)
Ramones - Leave Home, Rocket to Russia, Road to Ruin, End of the Century
Black Sabbath- Sabbath Bloody Sabbath (clear vinyl..freaky)
Miles Davis - Kind of Blue…great album. Wasn’t much of a Jazz guy but gave it a shot originally on iTunes and got hooked. So much better on vinyl. One of my faves. Real bluesy.
Dug into my old mans old record collection. Cleaned up a few of his old jazz LPs
Ahmad Jamal - Live at the Pershing great piano player.
now listening to Modern Jazz Quartet & Oscar Peterson Trio- Live at the Opera house. Pretty cool stuff to mellow out to.
These things hadn’t been played in 30 years. Put a little Gruv Glide on them…good as new. Those old fat vinyl LPs hold up well.

Re: Joy Division film in Other Bands & Artists
Just bought it DVD, just stumbled into it Best Buy…really liked it. I thought the actors did a great job live. Surprised they actually played live versus synching to a recording.

I love Empire Strikes First. Sinister Rouge is flippin fast and sounds almost like Blackened by Metallica !
Get their Live at the Palladium DVD. Excellent show!
They’re so tight live. Also cool to see the three guitar attack with Mr. Brett actually attending and not running Epitaph.
Have to say the New Roadmaps of Hell CD hasn’t done anything for me yet.

Re: What’s EveryOne Listening To in Other Bands & Artists
a couple of newbies
First some new- old school Bay Area Thrash
Testament - The Formation of Damnation…the first Testament with the original lineup (except the drummer). Alex Skolnick is still awesome.
Second the new Local H- 12 Angry Months..one the few bands that can pull of a concept album. Pretty simple in this case, in this case chronicling a horrible break-up. Good Stuff!

Face to Face got back together to do some shows. I think they’re in Europe right now..or were.
They aren’t planning to record because they have so many side projects..but they still love to play the stuff live.
Great live band, catch them if you can.
