What amps do you use? in Musicians (Gear, Tabs & Lyrics)

Title: What amps do you use?

I just decided to treat myself to a new amp. Finally went tube. I bought a Marshall TSL 122, and I must say it was worth every penny. It can get so many different tones it’s amazing!

What’s everyone else using?

Re: andy’s new amps… in Musicians (Gear, Tabs & Lyrics)

Does he ever use his Hamer studio customer anymore?

I liked the sound of that one. I’d love to get my hands on one, but nobody seems to carry them.

Personally, I’ll stick with my Gibson and my Fender, neither of which I could begin to afford if they went up in smoke tomorrow, but both of which are fuckin great.

I agree, once you get a higher end guitar, everything else just doesn’t sound nearly as good. Which can suck in a way if you’re short of cash and need a second axe.

Re: Epiphone or Squier in Musicians (Gear, Tabs & Lyrics)

Ugh…Unless you are specifically going for the classic Gibson or Fender guitar styles, I’d say check out some of the Ibanez and Jackson guitars. They have some decent guitars at reasonable prices.

If you can save up a bit longer, you may just want to go for gibson’s faded SG. I’ve got one and it’s great. When I bought it, at the store I kept switching between in and the SG special (which is the faded with a finished paint job) to see where the extra $300 went besides the paint job. I actually liked the faded better, it had a slightly brighter tone, but as for everything else they are identical.

Effects on N.A.N.E. in Musicians (Gear, Tabs & Lyrics)

Title: Effects on N.A.N.E.

Anyone else notice that Andy plays most of the stuff on N.A.N.E. through a Wah? That’s what gives the guitar it’s dirty sound.

I’ve got a Dunlop 585-Q which is adjustable, so I’ll have to spend some time this weekend tweaking my pedal to get the same effect.

But if anyone has already figured it out, please let me know.

Re: Help me pick a rig in Musicians (Gear, Tabs & Lyrics)

Valve amps aren’t so bad. They cut down on your heating bills. Just play for an hour or so, and those tubes get toasty enough to heat your room for a the rest of the night :D

Re: Help me pick a rig in Musicians (Gear, Tabs & Lyrics)

I own a Marshall personally. Mesa Boogie has some good stuff. Alot of bands I like use them and they have a great sound. They just don’t sell them in any of the shops I know of, so i haven’t been able to sit down with the various types they have.

SOme of the Johnsons’s sound pretty good to, and usually come with a ton of effects, and speaker emulators built in. Bit pricey though.

Re: What distortion units do have? in Musicians (Gear, Tabs & Lyrics)

Ibane Tube Screamer, DOD American Metal (if it still works), a BOSS GT-3 multi-effects processor (piece of crap, impossible to program), and the BOSS OD-20 Drive Zone, which is basically every BOSS distortion pedal in one with the knobs to tweak it properly..unlike the pain in the butt GT-3.

Re: New AMP - Need guidance in Musicians (Gear, Tabs & Lyrics)

On my little Fender AMp I go with the clean tone, with some reverb, and use my pedals for the distortion etc.

On my Marshall VS232 I mainly use the clean channel with the Bass up to around 4 and the trebel at 6 except when I’m playing my Les Paul and going for the live Pearl Jam sound. Then I use the overdrive with the gain about 4, bass 6, contour 4, trebel 8, Reverb around 4, comnined with my Ibanez Tube screamer pedal with the gain about 4 and tone at 5 (middle)

Re: Baritone Guitars in Musicians (Gear, Tabs & Lyrics)

I’ll have to check one out, if any of the music stores around would stock one…

Check out Viva Death http://www.vivadeath.com/v1/index.html, they are an experiment between Face to Face (singer/guitarist Trevor Keith and bassist Scott Shifflett), Foo Fighters (guitarist Chris Shifflett)and Josh Freese on drums (the Vandals).

All they use are Baritone guitars and you guys are right. They definitely have a unique sound.

Baritone Guitars in Musicians (Gear, Tabs & Lyrics)

Title: Baritone Guitars

Anyone out there have a baritone guitar?

With so many bands tuning down real low these days, most guitars lose a lot of sustain unless you put uber-fat strings on.

Supposedly the baritone guitars they are built ti a slightly different scale which gives them more sustain at the low tunings.

I know some can sound a bit different as well (Check out Viva Death).

But what I want to know is, are they really worth it, or does simply going with heavier strings on a regular guitar give you the same result..

Re: Fender guitars. in Musicians (Gear, Tabs & Lyrics)

I have to say I like both. I own a Fender American Strat and I did own a Telecaster.. Problem with the Tele is it’s sound is TOO distinct, so I didn’t like it’s sound with alot of things I played. The Strat is really nice, especially switched to the bridge P-Ups and running through a Uni-Vibe…

But I also own a Les Paul classic and a Faded SG-Special. I would have to say that these two are my workhorses..especially the SG. Throw it through a BOSS MT-2 with the bottom cranked half-way… Awesome!

Also the action on the Gibsons is much more comfortable than the Fenders..
