Re: George Bush in Chit-Chat

The only good thing about this election will be Bush will be gone. But not excited about either candidate.

McCain is 100 years old..but he does have the experience…but nothing to get excited about.

There’s tons of hype around O’Bama, but he’s done NOTHING! He’s a 2 year Senator (the Senate by the way is the most dysfunctional legislative body on Earth), that’s done nothing but immediately run for President. Yes he gives a good speech..but so what. No executive experience of any kind…he’ll he’s never even produed any meaningful legislation.

The Democrats are obsessed with electing another young senator to make him another Kennedy..I don’t know why. Senators suck…get a governor who’s done something.
And having Biden as a running mate isn’t a plus either. He’s just another long-time hack. I guess since he’s run for President 4 times (and won a grand total of 1 state primary by the way, not a great track record) so I guess it’s his turn to get a bump.

Palin is a right-winger to appease the base (since McCain isn’t a hard liner so they’re worried about getting the old time Republicans out to vote) and gives a decent speech, and ain’t too bad to look at. But not hot enough to get excited about either.

For all the talk about this being “The most important election in our lifetime” I would have liked to see better candidates.

All I can hope is that nobody (Republicans or Dems) get 60 votes in the Senate so neither can do too much damage.

Re: What’s EveryOne watching in Chit-Chat

This probably needs it’s own thread…but here goes.

Went and saw The Dark Knight…Holy fucking shit!! I won’t give anything away, except it could be one of the best movies I’ve ever seen. Ledger better get an Oscar. It’s not hype…he’s downright nuts! And the story is sooo much more than they let on. It’s a real Epic. And throughout the whole thing once you think you know what is going to happen, you’re wrong. They especially seem to like pulling the chains of the comic geeks (like me) who try to predict how things will ultimately go.

And it is dark!

It’s fucked up on par with Seven..if not worse. The things the Joker pulls are just wrong. Not ha-ha Jack Nicholson Joker wrong…I’m talking Nazi death camp wrong.
Most of the brutal violence is implied…but for some reason I found that more shocking. It’s the situations that people are put in that make it so brutal and intense. (and I don’t mean hanging off a cliff…while there is some of that).
By the way, it ends with you knowing there’s going to be a third movie (at least), but where the hell they are going to go with it…I have no clue. The ending is so different then what you’d expect, but I won’t give anything else away.

Just one piece of advice…empty the bladder before the show and don’t drink anything. It’s over 2.5 hours, but you won’t want to miss anything, especially the last two hours…I was in agony at the end.

long story short!…(too late) Go see this movie! Come back and discuss!

Re: What’s everyone NOT watching? in Chit-Chat

Dexter is a rare case where the show is way better than the books. The first season was basically the first Dexter book, but the second season goes way beyond what the books have. The show actually builds up the characters more than the books. Only potentially interesting bit in the books is how his girlfriend’s kids are budding little Dexters.
But the author killed off the woman leutenant in the first book and mangled Doakes in the second. The girlfriends ex isn’t even in the books. Where the show turned them into big characters.

Can’t wait for the 3rd season

George Carlin RIP in Chit-Chat

George Carlin died today (well last night), at 71. Not too shocked, last thing I saw him in he looked a little banged up. Sad though, funny and talented guy.

Re: what was the last gig you went to? in Chit-Chat

just got back from seeing Pearl Jam again..good as usual. Only issue was whenever Eddie talked to the crowd, the echo was so bad up in the 2nd deck you couldn’t understand a word he said. SO everyone just started yelling “shut and Play!”

Re: What’s EveryOne watching in Chit-Chat

watching some old Anime. The Irresponsible Captain Tylor. Generally not a fan of the funnier stuff, it’s usually too over the top goofy. But this one let the situations and plot drive the laughs. Plus it had alot of Food for Thought.

Watched the end of the Wire. One of the greatest shows of all time! Sad to see it go, but cool it left of their own terms. Not one filler show…unlike Sopranos

Re: Your favourite movies of 2007? in Chit-Chat

Thinking about this I had a hard time thinking of what I’ve seen that came out in 07.
Looking at some of the other threads, hepled me out
I liked Hot Fuzz, Zodiac, the Simpsons and I got the Bourne Ultimatum but still haven’t gotten around to watching it. Nothing too special though.
I loved the final cut of Blade Runner, but I don’t really count that.

The best stuff I’ve watched this year have been TV shows … The Shield, Dexter and the Wire (which may be the best show I’ve ever watched. Shame this is the last season but I think they’re doing it the right way, they had a story to tell and they told it. So much better than the Sopranos but gets nowhere near the publicity) The Brotherhood is another one that has been creeping below the surface but is really strong.

Anyone looking for something good to watch I’d recommend picking up the DVDs for all of these shows, especially the Wire. Each season’s only 10-11 1hr episodes, and each season is a self contained story (or case) , but at the same time there’s continutity between the seasons.

Thanks everyone! Don’t worry Mrs H, I live on the east coast (from Northern Virginia), and right now we are the exact opposite of So. Cal. It’s been raining for the last few days. Which we needed, or we could have ended up like Cali.

Re: What’s everybody reading in Chit-Chat

BLown through a few lately

Dexter in the Dark - Jeff Lindsay.. okay. Not as good as the first two. And I think the show has now overtaken the books. But still enjoyable.

Warren Ellis - Jagged Little Vein. Uneven, but short. But does contain the single most disturbing image I’ve yet read…it can be summed up in three words.. Godzilla Bukkake theater. Contains some pretty funny stuff, but really doesn’t have much of an ending.

Read CHarlie Huston’s first three books ( Caught Stealing, 6 Bad Things, and A Dangerous Man). They’re a trilogy, lot of fun. Kind of Pulp FIctionish

Re: RIP Ian Mckaye in Chit-Chat

The biggest clue it was a hoax was the phrase “Outside a Fugazi show”. If Fugazi was back together, that would be huge buzz. Especially here in the D.C. area.

Re: Sopranos - final episode in Chit-Chat

Wow, it finally made it you guys huh!

I’m assuming everyone already knew what to expect at the very end. The discussion is way mroe subdued than it was here in the states when it originally aired.

I have to admit, I cursed at the screen and checked my cable for a second.

To me it’s was obvious what happened. They fooled you to looking at all the red herring coming into he diner, and just when you think it’s going to end okay (but with Tony contantly looking over his sholder)..then wham!!

Tony (and possibly the whole family) got whacked from someone we never saw…just like Bobby Bacchala talked about earlier in the season when him and Tony were in the boat at the lake.

The other big theories are
1. They live but always looking over their sholders for the potential hit..if you want to call that living

2. Tony was killed by the guy who went to the bathroom, (ala Michael Corleon hitting McClusky and Solozzo in the Godfather).

but I’m sticking with my theory..it was the guy you never saw coming.
