Re: best cover songs ever? in Other Bands & Artists

Gotta go with the one’s where the cover kills the original.

All Along the Watchtower- Hendrix (All Time greatest cover!!! of course it seems just about everyone else’s version of a Bob Dylan song is better than the original)

Green Manalishi with the 2 Prong Crown- Judas Priest (believe it or not it was a Fleetwood Mac song).

Sonic Reducer- Pearl Jam
Minor Threat- Pennywise
Bark at the Moon- Strung Out
You Really Got Me- Van Halen

Every song on Grage Days Re-Visited!! especially Helpless, The Wait, and Last Caress/Green Hell) - Metallica

Re: Top 5 Albums in Other Bands & Artists

I think I’ll have to go with Hooch’s approach.

Top 5 at the moment (not including Bootlegs or personal mixes)

Suffer- Bad Religion
The Argument- Fugazi
Vs- Pearl Jam
About Time- Pennywise
Semi-Detatched- T? (I always seem to rotate which one of their CDs I listen to..based on mood I guess. Really I’ve been listening to my own mix CD with a few B-sides and live tracks thrown in. But Tightrope Walker, Lonely-Crying Only and Suing God and Straight Life seem to be in heaviest rotation so I’ll put Semi-Detached right now)

A little off topic but it seems once you get an MP3 jukebox you never seem to find yourself listening to any whole album anymore. And even though I have my whole collection loaded in there, I never seem to have more than 4 or 5 bands in rotation…anyone else have that issue?

Re: Kevin Smith - new jersey saga in Chit-Chat

according to Kevin it’s supposed to be old school. Just Dante and Randall, with Jay & Bob like they were in the first. No cutsey cameos or anything. It’s supposed to check in on how they are doing after being still stuck being a clerk 10 years later.

I wonder if he’ll stick with the title he put out there
“The Passion of the Clerks”

I think there’s supposed to be an animated feature as well.

Actually he sort of has gone Lucas on us. On the Clerks X box set, there’s a feature where they animated the lost scene in the funeral home (taken from the comic book). You can play it within the movie or seperate. It’s pretty funny, even has Joey Lauren Adams as Allissa Jones.

Re: Kevin Smith - new jersey saga in Chit-Chat

Clerks is definitely the best. I working as a register jockey in a gas station for 4 years…I know Dante & Randal. And depending on the day, I was Dante and Randal. And instead of Hockey, we played football.

Clerks 2 should be coming out in the next year or so…according to Kevin it will be like the original and not another J&SBSB

Re: New Megadeth in Other Bands & Artists

A few months ago I downloaded the “Kick the Chair” MP3..ugh! I just pretend it doesn’t exist. Poor Dave..he so much wants to be like Metallica. Just like them after Megadeth’s biggest album (countdown to extinction) it went quickly downhill, just like Metallica with the Black album. Sure later albums for both groups had some quality songs, but overall each later album got weaker and weaker even though both tried to play harder without going back to their original sounds…

I have to admit though the re-mastered Killing is My Business was great..it’s such a killer CD but the original production was really rough. All of the original vocals kind of slurred together..granted they were on smack at the time.

If anyone gets a chance, try and pick up the bootlegs of the early Metallica tapes with Dave on guitar..really cool hearing James sing Mechanix!

Re: these star wars new dvds… in Chit-Chat

I love the scene in the Clerks cartoon where Randall gets Lucas on the stand..blasts him for Ep1, and makes him give him his 8 bucks back..

Re: these star wars new dvds… in Chit-Chat

Lucas just can’t leave well enough alone. I hate the way they re-dubbed Boba Fett with the actor who plays Jengo Fett in Ep2! His original voice was menacing and mechanical.

Re: What’s EveryOne Listening To in Other Bands & Artists

finally checked out Husker Du’s Diane… I loke the original bass line, but I like the way Any sings it better..musch more disturbing

What a pile o’ shite. Damn I hate Celine Dion!

(I know that song is by Shania Twain and she deserves to die as well, but I just wanted to point out that I hate Celine Dion)

just wanted to point out they’re Canda’s fault! But Shania’s at least tolerable with Mute on.. the men out there know hat I’m talking about!

Re: weezer - pinkerton in Other Bands & Artists

Matt’s the old bass player right?

Last I heard he was suing the band over royalties for some of the songs off the first two albums. Never a good sign.

Not sure if he’s still doing the Rentals thing still either

Proof that not all American Music is Crap in Other Bands & Artists

Title: Proof that not all American Music is Crap

FOr the beater of US music over in the “American Curiosity” thread. Here’s a little proof that we still have some talented artists here.

Unfortunately the corporate machine has deluted our punk as bad as they did metal in the 80’s, but there’s still a few who still play loud, fast, and angry. Something all T? fans can appreciate I’m sure.

I just downloaded their new song…makes me bitter I have to wait until November.

Re: weezer - pinkerton in Other Bands & Artists

I thought Pinkerton was their best! It came out and you heard nothing about it (the Infernal Love comparison is spot on!) A lot of great stuff on that CD.

“Tired of having sex” is one of their best.

Re: American Curiosity in General Therapy? Topics

We may have invented crap-pop (debatable), but we had the problem under control in the mid-90 we had kicked the new kids to the curb and all was good until you guys decided to piss on our parade and send the spice girls over…EVIL!
Should have left well enough alone.

But we did give you Punk! via the Ramones. Give us credit for a good idea once in a while. Euro-(or anything for that matter) Disney is another story.

You have a point with the so-called “Reality” shows, thank god for DVDs. The only possible good outcome is the next generation of kids may be the most literate since there isn’t shit on TV! But just as much of that crap started in the UK so we can’t sholder the whole blame.

At one time I could have thrown up Star Wars in your face…but then Lucas had to go and make the latest movies which has pretty much wrecked it…

I’m depresing myself..right now The Matrix is on..another good example of something great until they made a sequal(s).

Ugh! I need a beer

Re: American Curiosity in General Therapy? Topics

I’m in no way going to say that the US companies don’t do stupid things. Especially the record companies.. But I have to place the finger of blame entirely at the Brits…

You guys have more than paid us back for the Revolution by unleashing two of the most insideous, horrible and sneaky weapons of mass annoyance ever to darken the Earth…

Spice Girls and American Idol (brought to us by Brit Simon Powell)

Nothing has done more damage to the fiber of American life then these.

But it’s backfired on you. Ha!Ha! You give us the Spice Girls and we send back a bunch of even worse Pop wannabee’s

That’s what you get!

And Yes! This tirade is completely brought on by the fact that I’m bitter that I have to import NANE!!

Hallelulya!!! Holy Shit!!! Where’s the Tylanol!

Re: Shameless - whats wrong with it?!? in General Therapy? Topics

I didn’t know there was an import version of Shameless until Disgracelands post. I decided to muck around Amazon to look for it.. For the US site their THerapy? stuff is somewhat scattered. I just typed in Therapy (without the ?) and got 70 some entries for musix. I found the import buried around item 50.

One question. Big Time isn’t a Peter Gabriel cover is it?

I see you can buy Denim Demon on a Turbonegro tribute comp.

just trying to determine if I should splurge for the import or go with the Turbonegro domestic comp.

Re: Only one left :( in Other Bands & Artists

Sad…second Ramone gone from cancer.

The man showed that you didn’t have to be Hendrix to play great guitar driven songs..and probably leaves behind an even larger crowd of artists directly influenced by him.

I know around 10 years ago there was a point where I was about done playing guitar (metal had gone stale and grunge was just taking off, my equipment sucked and was falling apart), and a buddy of mine lent me “All the Best and More vol.1”. I always liked the Ramones but that was the first time I really sat down and listened to them from a musicians point of view. A few hours later I had figured out most of the songs I liked (just a matter of figuring out which 3 chords were in use) and kept playing them over and over. They made it simple and funfor me again, and I’m still playing.

He’ll be missed..

Re: Worst cover version in Other Bands & Artists

Any song which has been punk/ska’d up but was not originally a punk/ska song. The Hippos version of So Lonely by the Police was a disgrace..

…But I have to admit Less Than Jake’s versions of Slayer’s ‘Evil Has No Boundries’ and ‘Anti-Christ’ were actually pretty interesting.

And every American high school garage band circa 1990-1993 which covered For Whom the Bells Toll and couldn’t even attempt the short lead riffs…ruined more than one party for me. Every weekend there’d be a different band at a different place destroying what is actually a pretty simple song…AAGGHH!

Re: Graham, Neil or Fyfe? in General Therapy? Topics

Not being a drummer myself I can’t comment on any of the technical bits. SO I’ll just comment on the effect each seems to have (to me) on the music.

Fyfe clearly had more of a contribution to shaping the overall sound of the band than the others. His rhythms were much more diverse, original and (pardon the pun) groovy.

Graham to me ,seemed much more of a steady pounding big hitter in the John Bonham vein. But I agree with sonofjaguare, the stuff on SPYF was great. Especially Ten Year Plan, the drums drove that sone more than the guitar.

Neil seems to be more of a jackhammer. It’ll be interesting to really listen to his contributions on the new CD.

Re: What distortion units do have? in Musicians (Gear, Tabs & Lyrics)

Ibane Tube Screamer, DOD American Metal (if it still works), a BOSS GT-3 multi-effects processor (piece of crap, impossible to program), and the BOSS OD-20 Drive Zone, which is basically every BOSS distortion pedal in one with the knobs to tweak it properly..unlike the pain in the butt GT-3.

Re: Most Depressive T? Song…??? in General Therapy? Topics

THe last song on the latest T? CD…because that means there are no more new songs until they record a new one…how’s that for a sappy answer.

Diane is their creepiest (funny that the Husker Du folks hate it)…but I’d have to say either “Gone” or “Bowels of Love”…actually Infernal Love as a whole is a bit of a downer.

Re: Shameless - whats wrong with it?!? in General Therapy? Topics

a little uneven. Dance, this one’s for you, gimmie back my brain, stalk and slash, are good. The rest didn’t do anything for me

Re: New AMP - Need guidance in Musicians (Gear, Tabs & Lyrics)

On my little Fender AMp I go with the clean tone, with some reverb, and use my pedals for the distortion etc.

On my Marshall VS232 I mainly use the clean channel with the Bass up to around 4 and the trebel at 6 except when I’m playing my Les Paul and going for the live Pearl Jam sound. Then I use the overdrive with the gain about 4, bass 6, contour 4, trebel 8, Reverb around 4, comnined with my Ibanez Tube screamer pedal with the gain about 4 and tone at 5 (middle)

Re: US release date? in General Therapy? Topics

Belive it or not, to save few bucks order it directly from Amazon Uk. ON the US Amazon site they had it for $33 (something like that), if you order it straight from Amazon UK it comes out to around $25-26 bucks accounting for Exchange rate. Plus it’s sketchy when you’d get it through Amazon (US). SO I said the hell with it and ordered directly from Amazon UK

Re: What’s EveryOne Listening To in Other Bands & Artists

Not listening to any particular album. Doing mst of my listening at work, with my MP3 player, so I just plop on entire artisit and let is shuffle. SO here’s the bands I’m listening to at the moment

Therapy?
Strung Out (especially Live in a Dive)
Bad Religion
Ten Foot Pole/Pulley mix
Decendents
Fugazi (ordered all of their Bootlegs from the Bass Player, some brilliant stuff there even if the recordings are a little raw).

Re: Favourite song at present. in Other Bands & Artists

Do What You Want- Bad Religion

and

Bring Out Your Dead by Strung Out..the live version off of “Live In A Dive”..kicks twice as hard as the original

Re: Pixies Vs Nirvana in Other Bands & Artists

Nirvana sounds better and are more commercial. But the Pixies set the groundwork. They had an effect similiar to Bob Dylan. It sometimes takes a cover of one of their songs for you to realize how great their songwriting is. (Weezers Velouria, Get Up Kids Alec Eiffel, or Popa Roach’s version of Gouge Away). Also their sound is much more diverse and experimental.

As for the Pearl Jam comment that anything after thier 1st album sucks…take a listen to Lukin off of No Code ; Do the Evolution off Yield; or Save You off of Riot Act. They can still jam (no pun intended) as well as anyone. But their sound has mellowed a bit. I think a lot of that has to do with Eddie’s voice being a shell of what it once was.

Pick up the bootleg of their concert in Atlanta in 1994. It was for a radio broadcast, and very common on E-Bay. One listen and you will immediately change you mind. It is one of the greatest shows you will ever hear from anyone. Listen especially to Blood. You’d be amazed that Eddie could speak for a week after that. Powerful! Plus they do the best version of Sonic Reducer you’ll ever hear

5) Caucation Psycosis (Babyteeth/Pleasure Death EPs combined for US release)- Potato Junkie, Skyward, Animal Bones

6) High Anxiety- If it Kills Me, Voodoo Doll, Stand in Line

Re: review of N.A.N.E and cover in General Therapy? Topics

Cover looks like the side-shot of a skyscraper, with one of the floors blowing up…not so much the WTC but the Nakatomi building in Die Hard when they blew the roof.

But I could be wrong… Could also look like three smokestacks pumping out smoke…

Maybe it’s purposely vague which would fit nicely as a play on the title.
