Re: What’s EveryOne Listening To in Other Bands & Artists

Re: What’s EveryOne Listening To in Other Bands & Artists
I am currently listening to my first two new release purchases of 2012, namely:
Therapy? - A Brief Crack of LIght - I have commented in the dedicated thread, but needless to say I like it
Lamb of God - Resolution - Again, pleased with this one. Some interesting ventures into new pastures without being odd for the sake of it. I expect it will be a bit too melodic for some long-term fans..I’m anticipating cries of “sell out!”, and certainly it’s a more accessible album than some of their others. But…it’s very good.

Re: Manic Street Preachers in Other Bands & Artists
Saw the Manics last week and…bloody hell, I wasn’t expecting them to be so good!
JdB was on great form, vocal- and guitar-wise. Never heard him play the solos so closely to the recorded versions before.
Just three songs from the latest (and worst) album, and some nice surprises in the setlist.
Happy days!

Re: new AC/DC dvd in Other Bands & Artists
I haven’t got this one yet - I have their other live DVD’s and haven’t been disappointed with one yet.
this tour was the first time I got to see them live myself, so I’m especially keen to see this DVD.

Re: foo fighters in Other Bands & Artists
Grohl comes across as such a great bloke, they are very, very good live and I really want to like them but…
…their music just leaves me cold.
I wish it left Kerrang! Radio cold too, cos they play waaaaaaaaay too much Foo Fighters..

Re: Big 4 in Other Bands & Artists
Having watched the Big 4 DVD, it’s clear that the other three bands piss all over Metallica in terms of musicianship and tightness.
I have to say I hate Bellendonna-era Anthrax…letting Bush go was a very bad move in my book. I’d have settled for Dan Nelson, he sounds promising in the YouTube clips…but Joey..Nah, no thanks. I’m out.

Re: What’s EveryOne Listening To in Other Bands & Artists
In amongst all the bluff and bluster, I reckon there are some damn fine songs too.
Been listening to a lot of Lamb of God lately, but there’s only so long a 38 year old man can sulk about having to tidy his room, so I’ve moved on from them for now.

I listened to Big Country and The Alarm on the way to work this morning, so feel free to take me out the back and shoot me.

^ Oh, had a quick spin of their second album yesterday - sounded quite promising. Max really needs to start writing some better lyrics, though.

I’m a big fan of his blues stuff.
Gutted.

Re: What’s EveryOne Listening To in Other Bands & Artists
A bit of Disintegration - The Cure this morning. Probably not the best music for that “Friday feeling” so it didn’t last long! But at least I switched over to radio 2 in time to hear Elton John say “fucking hell!” on national breakfast-time radio.
Last night’s journey home was Depeche Mode - Black Celebration.
I have to make up cool points after listening to John Mayer lots last week. I know, I know, you don’t have to say anything… I know…
*hangs head in shame*
This is worse than when I told Dan I liked Paramore…

YEAH! Get off yer arse and DA-YUNCE to that funky, erm, 12 minute prog epic about a futuristic society where aliens have banned all forms of artistic expression. Or summat.

Good choice. I’m currently listening to some early Dave Gilmour solo stuff on YouTube…I feel my obsession worsening…

Re: What’s EveryOne Listening To in Other Bands & Artists
I’ve never really listened to any Carcass so I can’t comment on them specifically but it really frustrates me that other bands can’t get a simple live album and/ or DVD out more often.
What did you think of the Down DVD, Simon? I’m starting to get past its flaws and appreciate it for what it is…and now I really want to see them live again.

Re: What’s EveryOne Listening To in Other Bands & Artists
The Second Coming’s a really good album, some fantastic stuff on there. The Seahorses album, as you rightly say, is mostly gash. Apart from the riff in the aforementioned “now we know where we’re going song” (Love Is The Law, I think?), it’s ALL gash, in fact.

Yeah, Gimme, the 2 CD version of JFPL is house in a kind of tall book thing, very similar to the 2 CD version of Postcards…, if you’ve seen that anywhere.
From memory, the “Journal…” book features all the lyrics - photos of what look like the original Richey pages from his lyric book..Mind I haven’t looked at it for ages so I’m not 100& sure…

Re: What’s EveryOne Listening To in Other Bands & Artists
Agreed.
A lot of Down fans seem to rate the first album and consider the second one a bit of a mess and the third a let-down.. which I can’t understand at all. The second one for me is focused and sounds great, and has a whole load of great songs on it…what’s not to like? And the third..well like you say, Gav, the production is a bit odd but the songs are solid enough.

Re: What’s EveryOne Listening To in Other Bands & Artists
I agree with Gav - there are moments throughout the DVD/ CD where the performance would have been significiantly better if certain members of the band hadn’t been so apparently monged.
The bit where Phil throws his toys out of the pram about getting a new mic stand - despite the fact that the roadie brought one on ages ago and it’s right under his nose - is a prime example. “Ooooh! THERE it is…oops…!”

I know the (Down) DVD hasn’t been watched yet.. but it is still worth buying, the sound quality is ok? Been waiting for this release for ages!
The DVD and CD are definitely not without their faults (is it me or is the picture and sound quality on the DVD quite average at best?), especially Jail on the CD (Ian Brown eat your heat out), but I still enjoy them a lot.

Re: Manic Street Preachers in Other Bands & Artists
Some of their worst ever songs are on this album, and after Journal it is a huge disappointment.
And if you listen to the demos, you’ll notice that even Nicky Wire doesn’t sing as badly as Ian McCulloch, which is really saying something…
