Re: Metallica in Other Bands & Artists

Yeah, they do a live version of the show midweek now, and then go off-air and record the rest of the programme for Friday’s showing.

I thought Metallica’s sound was very echoey and weak. Admittedly this probably isn’t their fault, but still. And Kirk was really struggling to keep up with the faster bits. There’s something very odd about his guitar sound, too, it always sounds out of tune with everything else, even though it isn’t.

What nonsense.
It may not be the best Metallica album, you may even think it is completely shit , but to say it is “the biggest pile of bollocks ever” is just trying to get a soundbite and bait a few Metallica fans.

But yeah Metal is doing alright at the moment, thanks.

Re: I just bought… in Other Bands & Artists

ZZ Top - Eliminator (25th Anniversary Edition with DVD)
Thin Lizzy - UK Tour 75 (Brand new live album from classic line-up..a genuine untouched-up rival to the notoriously overdubbed Live And Dangerous)
Soulfly - Primitive
Soulfly - Soulfly

Also just ordered the DVD/ CD remastered version of U2 - Under a Blood Red Sky. Finally a chance to see footage not included in the original VHS release.

Re: Metallica in Other Bands & Artists

It’s a shame the song St Anger hasn’t survived past that initial tour, seeing as it was by far the best song on the album.

Re: Metallica in Other Bands & Artists

Ah yes, now I know what you mean. I use a similar programme to compile my CD’s at work and I can often see straight away if a song is gonna sound all fucked up even before I listen to it.

I bought this DVD of Metallica today:
http://hmv.com/hmvweb/displayProductDetails.do?ctx=280;-1;-1;-1&sku=849981

anyone else seen that?

It’s like a decent quality bootleg - got it from HMV though. When James talks, there are Korean subtitles on the screen that you can’t get rid of! It also has a wanky logo in the top right all the way through and they name of each song comes up, along with the album and year of release.

It is quite obviously taken from Korean TV, but the picture and sound quality isn’t bad, and it’s quite a funny little item - oh and the set includes the now old “Other New Song”..

Sorry for being thick, but what does that mean?

Re: What’s EveryOne Listening To in Other Bands & Artists

Death Magnetic - Megadeth
Motorizer - Motorhead
Conquer - Soulfly
All Soap Is Gone - Slipknot

Hmmm methinks 2008 is actually shaping up to be a good Year Of Rock!

Re: Mercury Music Prize in Other Bands & Artists

I am just SO relieved we have these arbiters of cool to tell me what to buy so I don’t have to make such tricky decisions for myself.

You can almost see their minds working as they judge the albums..”Oh yeah I LOVE The Adele album…but that would be, like, SO obvious to vote for…and the Times reckons we’re gonna vote for Burial…so…erm…which band haven’t I actually heard of much? Cos they MUST be the coolest if no-one else gets them like I do…even though I haven’t heard them..BUT I’ve heard they’re dead good…from that man over there with the beard and the serious face and he looks like he knows EVERYTHING about cool stuff.”

As you were.

Re: Metallica in Other Bands & Artists

I don’t think it means anything that they have played it for years and years - Lars and Kirk have been performing their godawful solos in every gig during that period too

Re: Metallica in Other Bands & Artists

Have to say I object to these people who class everyone who likes the album as a “fanboy”, as if we’re all too stupid to see the emperor has no clothes on.

Some of us who are not die-hard defenders to the hilt of Metallica still think it’s a good album, you know, doesn’t mean we want to suck hard on Ulrich’s member…

And much as I like MoP, I don’t think Metallica have EVER done a flawless album. You can’t tell me that The Thing That Should Not Be is the stuff of genuis, for example.

Liked the new Soulfly album so I have just bought “3” for a fiver at HMV and ordered Dark Ages and Prophecy too.

*cough* dump the fucking instrumental and Unforgiven III then *cough*

Re: Metallica in Other Bands & Artists

St Anger and to some extent Load and Reload were the sound of a band “trying”, whereas Death Magnetic sounds effortless.

Re: Metallica in Other Bands & Artists

If you want to compare it to other Thrash bands, or what their early contempories are doing now, then I think it is safe to say that, for example, the album is nowhere near as brutal or aggressive or fast as something like Christ Illusion.

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not slagging Slayer off, cos I am a fan of both bands, but god damnit CI is a hard album to love and get into, whereas Jeff Magnetic may not be so “full on” or convincing as a Thrash album but it IS a much more enjoyable album.

It’s not a perfect album but it is much better than I dared hope for from Metallica at this stage in the game.

^ Good point.

Maybe other photography fans, and indeed followers of other hobbies and pastimes, would care to contribute to my music collection expenses too…? :D

As for Death Magnetic: Easily the best Metallica album for a while. The weaker tracks are far better than the weak tracks on Load/ Reload. The only major criticism I have is that Unforgiven III seems really out of place and disrupts the flow of the album for me.
Other than that, this is the album that St Anger promised to be but failed..and even Kirk’s solos aren’t particularly shit. Just, you know, a bit shit.

Re: Metallica in Other Bands & Artists

Way back when blank cassettes first came on the market, apparently there was talk of a tax added to the price to compensate copyright owners for loss of revenue, so maybe they could introduce a similar tax elsewhere - for example all music downloads could be free but broadband connection would be taxed to make up the shortfall, or blank CD’s could cost more, or manufacturers of computers and/ or iPod/ MP3 devices could be charged a certain fee (which of course would be passed onto us!)

Just a thought, but seemingly more thought than the record industry has put into it so far.

Re: Metallica in Other Bands & Artists

Yeah there’s no competition between £x and FREE is there?! LOL

I think Metallica have taken a sensible step in allowing certain tracks to be available before the album is released. Cyanide has appeared on iTunes now, I believe.

Gone are the days of a nice easy single release followed by an album. I think Metallica, or rather their marketing people, have handled things in an interesting way.

By “Cheaper” I mean even cheaper than they are right now.

Sure, if you shop around you can buy most new releases for €12 or less.

But with the amount of music I listen to, I still wouldn’t be able to buy all hard copies.

Well this is surely true, but then that’s your choice to listen to all of that music.
I’m not having a go, btw, cos I am in the same boat - I download albums that I have my doubts over, so as not to waste a load of money on an album I probably won’t ever listen to again.

I actually think that CD’s are reasonably priced. I haven’t felt ripped-off when I’ve bought music for a long time, whereas in the early 90’s I’d be drop-jawed in a record shop at the cheek of putting such inflated price stickers on things.

The record industry is in meltdown at the moment, so I can’t see how reducing the prices further will do anything but to put even more small labels out of business and more independent shops into administration. And for every band that doesn’t need the money, there are ten or more who DO. I imagine Therapy? fit the latter category.

Still where Metallica are concerned, I think it’s safe to say their commercial business is on the up at present!

I already pre-ordered the album (God help me), am just downloading because I want to see what the rest of the album is like.
You would think that after having the CD format on the market for approx. 30 years now that they would have gotten cheaper.

They HAVE become cheaper - significantly so.

I can remember a time when a new release was somewhere in the region of £13.99, going up to as much as £16.99 for back catalogue albums.

Nowadays the going rate for a new release is £9.99 or less, and I buy most of my back catalogue stuff for between £5 and £8.

The increased competition from the internet (which exploits tax loopholes for overseas mail order) and from supermarkets can be thanked for this, of course, not generosity on behalf of the record companies.

Re: Metallica in Other Bands & Artists

I think if people are uploading and sharing copyrighted material without permission and without paying the artist has every right to be annoyed.

I download stuff myself - usually out of impatience and I end up buying the legit copy as soon as it’s out, which is exactly my plan with Geoff Magnetic - but I know I am the one in the wrong.

I wouldn’t take a bottle of milk or a newspaper from the local Spa without paying, so why is music considered to be some mystical, moral force that should be provided for free?

“A” Bomb In Wardour Street - The Jam

(I know it’s a bit cheeky to have just one letter as a link, but in both cases it is a major part of the title…or does that not convince anyone?!)

Soulfly - Conquer.

Never got into them before but I’m enjoying this one. Wasn’t expecting there to be any of the faster/ thrashier stuff on there so I was pleasantly surprised.
