The Clash in Other Bands & Artists

Title: The Clash

Any Clash fans out there in WoM World?

I am just getting started on them , as I picked up the excellent “Passion Is A Fashion” biography in HMV for £2.99, which inspired me in turn to dig out my hardly-ever-touched “Story of The Clash” compilation which in turn made me buy the “Westway To The World” DVD.

Some great (but oh too short) live footage on the DVD - I was a big Manics fan early on in their career and now I can see exactly why they were dismissed as Clash-copyists at the beginning, so many stolen ideas!

Which albums should I get?

(I will be avoiding “Cut The Crap”, for a start!)

Re: What Do You Do For A Living? in Chit-Chat

I work for a company that builds and instals sound systems into pubs and restaurants. You know, CD or hard-disc players for background music, all the cabling, amplification, loudspeakers etc etc.

We have some high-profile chains as clients.

I am the guy who picks the music that plays!

I compile CD’s (all above board, declaring the publishing info to PPL and all that, I assure you)as well as hard-disc playlists.

So, next time you are munching on your sunday lunch in a pub-restaurant type place, and you think “..Oh for f&*&’s SAKE, NO MORE SIMPLY RED!!!!!”, well it could well be my fault. Sorry!

Job is pretty good, gets a bit lonely sitting away at a PC all day but is quite fun.

Isolation sounds like a Joy Division rip-off, too, IMO

are you listening to “Wild One”? I think it’s the best collection of Thin Lizzy and some Phil Lynott songs.

No, I have the 2 CD Greatest Hits that came out a year or two ago, the one with the black cover with the Lizzy logo in silver. It has all the same songs as Wild One, though, plus a few more.

Only downside is I would’ve liked a studio version of Rosalie as well as the live one that is included.

Great for driving to!

20 years ago, today, Phil Lynott passed away. So, today I’ll listen to THIN LIZZY whole day..

I have been listening to the greatest hits for the last couple of days - I only knew the obvious tracks before - man there is some seriously good stuff on there!

Yet another talented life cut short by the curse that is drink and drugs. What a waste.

Phil Lynott RIP

slade/wizard covers don’t make me laugh…
they’ve got plenty of good songs of their own they never play live, those would make me laugh… or just a good t? gig already makes me laugh

BTW you stick in the mud! ;)

:D

Of course a T? gig should be crammed with a selection from the fine back catalogue they have, but do you people really think sticking a couple of cheesy Santa hats on and a bit of tinsel over the amps and hollering a couple of choruses of some tacky Chrimbo tunes is a bad thing?!

And if you disagree - fair enough, this is just my opinion, I know that - at least give it more than a blunt “No”. Hows about some alternative suggestions? Hows about what you WOULD like to see/ hear?

Re: Manics… where to start? in Other Bands & Artists

Lifeblood is their most consistent album for a while.

Musically, they seem to have found a niche that fits their current state of mind better than peddling the old angsty-punky attitude would, although on listening to it, it does seem a little like they are trying to rewrite the same song over and over and still not quite getting it where they want it… (listening to the B sides just makes this seem even more so).

Having said that, nothing on Lifeblood really matches the best of Know Your Enenmy, a much-maligned album. Whilst there was a serious lack of direction, and some really duff tracks (So Why So Sad ranks as one of their worst singles ever - and some of their worst songs have been released as singles, let’s not forget), KYE had highlights, such as found That Soul, that knock the socks off anything on Lifeblood.

I saw them on the Lifeblood tour (think that makes it 8 or 9 times now I’ve seen them) and although I wasn’t expecting much, I have to admit they were on form.

Re: Bill Hicks in Chit-Chat

When he was on top form, he was funny as fuck but RIGHT at the same time - as the best observational comedy is.

Sometimes, though, he just descended into cock jokes that went on far too long and weren’t nearly as funny or shocking as he thought.

Sound guy though. Mr Hicks - RIP

It was great to finally here Archives of Pain and IfwhiteamericatoldthrtruthitwouldgetRSIfromtypingthisbollox live on the last tour.

When Holy Bible came out, I guess I was pretty much obsessed with it, and whilst I have a life now (!) (just about), I still regard it as a very significant moment in musical history indeed.
