I’m supprised nobody has mentioned ‘Tommorrow’. Great song.

Good point! Beethoven Was Deaf (the live album) contains the WHOLE of that album live EXCEPT for Tomorrow! No justice!

I have heard him play it live, and it was top banana :D

Brits in Other Bands & Artists

Title: Brits

Any views on the performances/ceremony which was aired last night?

Weller was a let down - dodgy version of Town Called Malice with his average band (two ex-Ocean Colour Scene, yeuch!)

Prince was on form though - quality stuff!

Echo & the Bunnymen in Other Bands & Artists

Title: Echo & the Bunnymen

Any fans out there?

Strangely enough, it’s only the post-reformation stuff that I’ve ever gotten into, but the 4 albums they have done since have all had some great tracks on.

Oh yeah, and any fans of the McCulloch/ Seargent collaboration Electrafixion, which was Bunnymen in all but name..?

No..? Ah well, as you were!

Re: So what do you think of Kirk Hammett?? in Other Bands & Artists

Having said all of this, I admit Kirk is a much better lead guitarist than a certain Mr A. Cairns…

*Dave shudders at the mere mention of his mother-in-law

The only thing I will be going for my mother-in-law with is a breadknife….or maybe an axe.

…or an ice pick.

maybe a chainsaw?

Re: Radiohead in Other Bands & Artists

Well, it’s not bad per se, just doesn’t do it for me personally.

I find that it makes listening a chore, hard work, rather than something relaxing or energising.

I’ll be the first to admit that I prefer music that is quite straight-forward and unchallenging, but I can’t see the appeal of having to work at listening to music.

Morrissey Solo - Favourite Tracks in Other Bands & Artists

Title: Morrissey Solo - Favourite Tracks

Ok, I know I’m not gonna get the same response as the Smiths thread, but anyone out there got any fave Moz tracks?

Speedway

Thank Fuck he didn’t - they would prob have sounded as boring as the ones on the Black album!!!

How can you say that?? The Black album is solo heaven and they only improve the songs and give them more substance!

Er… yeah for guitarists. For listeners; putting some screaming cat noises in the middle of songs to satisfy the ego of your least respected member is a bit behind the times.

Ther’s a few songs i like but they’re not great in my eyes. Thats “in MY eyes” Isness!

I’m not a fan of Radiohead, can I join your club? :D

I heard Pyramid Song on the radio when it was new and thought it was so deliberately difficult it had to be a joke.

I liked some of the songs on Pablo Honey and The Bends and some of OK Computer, but as they go on they just seem to be making music in a way that has less to do with emotional connection and melody and more to do with mathematics and intellectualism.

Why the hell do you guys think he is in guitar magazines all the time and giving people all that advice? .. the main reason he is seen in constantly in guitar mags is because the riffs and solos just fucking rock!

But, um, doesn’t James write most of the riffs?!

Re: The Smiths- Faviroute tracks? in Other Bands & Artists

There Is A Light That Never Goes Out
Bigmouth Strikes Again
Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others
Shoplifters of the World Unite
I Won’t Share You
The Boy With The Thorn In His Side (“Rank” version)

Oh god this is so hard!

I could have picked half of their catalogue and still wanted to add more.

Great, great band.

PS Morrissey’s solo stuff is even better

Re: Faith No More in Other Bands & Artists

One of those bands that mysteriously seems to have gotten “lost” from history…

At one point, they were HUGE, everyone was into them, you couldn’t move for some twat in black, three-quarter-length shorts and a FNM T Shirt…

My personal fave song of theirs at the moment is Digging The Grave. Great riffery!

Re: So what do you think of Kirk Hammett?? in Other Bands & Artists

We’ll have to disagree on that one. I can’t see how you interpret his words to mean that he wants no solos, but hey..

To me, he is saying having no solos as a policy is as bad idea cos it means you are identifying with a fad, a fashion instead of just doing your own thing that will stand on its own merit in the long term. I agree with him, but I don’t see how that means he is saying “no solos”.

Re: The indie thread in Other Bands & Artists

King Adora, remember them! The front guy used to be in the Blaggards, who used to play in Birmingham all the time - they had a song called something like I Wanna Be In The Sweeney, which even had a snippet of the theme of said TV show in it.

Tubthumper wrote:

If you’d seen the SKOM documentary, you would have seen that Kirk was the one who was campaiging for no solos.

Erm, no he wasn’t! He was saying they shouldn’t have a rule either way, that the song should decide whether a solo is appropriate or not.

I think it’s clear from the film that Kirk’s opinions are both expressed far too timidly and ignored by James and Lars.

Re: So what do you think of Kirk Hammett?? in Other Bands & Artists

Oh yeah, and check the credits on albums and you’ll see that the decent solos are mostly down to the far superior James Hetfield. E.g. Nothing Else Matters, the slow solo in Master of Puppets…etc etc

Re: So what do you think of Kirk Hammett?? in Other Bands & Artists

He makes lots of mistakes live, his soloing has no emotive expression and he tries to cover up the lack of melody in them with lots of wah wah.

Easily one of the least inspired and inspiring guitarists to me.

Can’t stand his stuff. Lame lame lame lame lame!

Re: Metallica in Holland in Other Bands & Artists

Oh really? First bit of crticism I’ve heard of Rob..

What do you dislike about his attitude ? You mean he’s arrogant or false or…?

I think he seems very humble and very “into” playing, hence the prancing about, but I can see why some may find it a tad over-the-top..

I don’t mean to be argumentative, by the way, I’m just interested to hear how he comes across to you, interesting to hear a different point of view

Thanks!

They are great albums indeed.

And yeah, I can definitely see the influence of these two bands on the current crop, esp those you mention - well spotted.

Re: Joy Division film in Other Bands & Artists

24 Hour Party People was an enjoyable film to watch, but I must say I took it with a pinch of salt.

I was watching a Jam DVD the other day, with a clip of Tony Wilson introducing them on TV back in the late 70’s…my God what a dickhead he was then. And now, presumably, when he’s not busy presenting game shows that bomb and disappear without a trace after the first series. If they make it that far.

Am I ranting? Oops! As you were! :D

Re: Links to cool things in Chit-Chat

http://www.youtube.com

Basically a site for people to post clips of any sort, but type in a band name and you can find all kinds of long-lost TV footage from throughout the years.

Some of the quality is terrible, but check it out, there’s some amazing stuff on there I never thought I’d get to see.

There is NO justice in this world!

Motorhead, after their early 80’s success when No Sleep Til Hammersmith made number one in the album charts (Can you imagine it now - A live MH album at number one?!?!), look destined to be forever the bridesmaid, never the bride.
