Re: Underrated Albums in Other Bands & Artists

I’ll keep it brief. Just to ramble off a few:

Mayday - Matthew Ryan
Fantastic Planet - Failure
In Loving Memory Of… - Big Wreck
Read Music/Speak Spanish - Desaparecidos
Transmission - Tea Party
Lohio - Ass Ponys

and, of course, the cinematic genius of…

Black Love - Afghan Whigs

…makes my heart hurt a little just thinking about it…

Death To The Pixies doesn’t count, it’s a compilation that’s way too easy. Congregation by AW is a really good choice. Their cover of The Temple by ALW is really really good. Miles Iz Ded is also brilliant together with Tonight and in fact all the songs AW have ever produced (except for the songs on Up In It, they’re mediocre.)

Sorry. I couldn’t quite finish my thought before I ran out of time this morning…poor management skills, I’m afraid.

Anyway…

I feel that, for the most part, Gentlemen is the most widely recognized Whigs album. And yes, it’s stellar! But Congregation and Black Love both kick ass and are, in my humble opinion, severely underappreciated.

So, to finally get to my point…

Thanks for sending props to Congregation! Maybe it’ll encourage someone out there to give it another spin, and recognize the genius that we call ‘Dulli’.

(Okay. The cheese factor was a little high on that one. Yep. Sorry ‘bout that).

I chose ‘Death to the Pixies’ for the live disc.
Being one of the few who never got to see them play, it pulls double duty as both solace and a kick in the teeth.

I’m not going to lie, the Afghan Whigs are my favorite band, so it was really hard to limit my Top 5 to just one Dulli project!

And as a side note, why do I get the impression that folks deem Congregation as the bastard, red-headed stepchild? I admit that Black Love is hands down my very favorite, and Gentlemen is brilliant, but Congregation is fucking awesome! Where’s the love?
