I’m tempted by this gig but have never even listened to New Model Army!
Am I missing out, and if so, what albums of theirs should I check out?

All of them:

The Independent Years/No Rest for the Wicked (1984/85)- Raw and aggressive, best bass guitar playing in the world

The Ghost of Cain (1986) - more sophisticated songwriting, acoustic guitars, still pretty wild and bass-oriented

“Thunder & Consolation” (1989) - a real masterpiece.
For me, one of the best albums ever recorded.
Went gold in Germany.
Has an electric violin in some songs.

“Impurity” (1990) - Not quite as good as T&C but still VERY good.

“The Love of Hopeless Causes (1993) - Straight rock album with really great songs

“Strange Brotherhood” (1998) - The end of an era (drummer/co-writer left afterwards), most people don’t like it too much (production wise), I do ;-)

“Eight” (2000) - Good songs but bad production (IMHO)

Carnival (2004) - Very good songs, great sound, lots of (real) drum and bass

High (2007) - the new one - expect to hear about 6-8 songs from this record

As I said earlier, Cologne gigs are traditional and VERY special :-)))

What is it all about, really?

I’d say you can expect a 45-60 min. set by T? and some 120 min. NMA.

The place to get the tickets in Germany is http://www.contour-music.de
The contour staff is very helpful.

See you there,

Re: T? support New Model Army in Cologne (22.12.2007) in Therapy? Live

NMA’s x-mas gigs are somewhat traditional (started around 2000) - you can always expect a top gig with some gems in the setlist and a pretty crazy crowd from all over Europe (or rather all over the world, as the US tour was cancelled to due visa problems).

This will be good!

Re: Music DVD’s in Other Bands & Artists

Justin Sullivan & Friends - “Tales Of The Road”

They play semi-acoustic NMA stuff and songs from Justin’s solo album “Navigating By The Stars”.

If you like JS/NMA and see this DVD on ebay or anywhere else - BUY IT!

No, he’s the second guitarist.
As far as I remember, he once had the opportunity to join New Model Army but Justin wouldn’t allow him to sing his own songs  bloody rockstars… :D

Re: Levellers in Other Bands & Artists

A Weapon Called the Word (89)
Levelling the Land (91)
Levellers (93)

…those were their best albums and should be remembered :D
All of a sudden, the band started sounding like OASIS in the late 90s…that’s when I totally lost interest in them.

Simon Friend should have started a band of his own

Saw some brilliant gigs a few years ago…

I can highly recommend their latest album Carnival - full of brilliant bass lines and furious drums :D …and of course Justin’s lyrics…amazing!

New Model Army in Other Bands & Artists

Title: New Model Army

So, with that gig in France ahead (and the London festival unfortunately cancelled) - what do you people think about New Model Army?

I’d love to see both bands on tour toghether, maybe as “alternating headliners” :D

Skinning Pit.

It’s got that early New Model Army feeling to it.

The bass sound on Isolation is also great.
