Re: Whats on your mind right now? in Chit-Chat
Great. An unread message for me. And it’s spam.
Yeah, so I decided to come by once more (my life over the past few years has been quite interesting, ranging from involuntarily getting involved in fights to relatives passing away), I noticed an unread message to me, I get all excited, and guess what? It’s freaking spam.

Re: Kickin’ it old skool: 8bit to 16bit in Chit-Chat
When I was younger I used to play games on the Sharp MZ 721, and later moved on to a Toshiba HX 10 (MSX 1).
But I’ve recently gotten into the whole console thing with a Wii, Nintendo 64 (second hand) and PSOne (again, second hand, and dirt cheap at €9).

I’d go with the Acer - you may not need all that disk space, but at this moment I’d choose a harddisk over solid state (or any sort of flash memory). The price per GB is significantly lower, and flash based solid state disks suffer from limited write cycles (which is even worse when using multi-level cells as opposed to single-level cells), and repeated writes to the same area of the disk (such as a swap file) will wear that area out quite quickly. To fix such problems flash based systems incorporate something called wear levelling but that simply delays the inevitable.
And since Ubuntu is free you can always ditch whatever OS the Acer comes with and simply download and install Ubuntu instead.

Re: What’s EveryOne watching in Chit-Chat
These days it’s Law & Order, Law & Order: SVU, Mythbusters and the occasional TV series DVD. In fact, I just started with disc 1 of the Addams Family season 1 box. Great stuff.

Stubble is overrated. One should either grow a proper beard and/or moustache, or simply not bother at all.
Then again, I would say that, being the hairy fecker that I am.

There’s the problem right there - whenever popular shitpop band x quits or disappears from public view (or up their collective arse as the case might be), shitpop band x+1 turns, only to start the cycle anew. Said cycle may include an appearance at pinkpop, easily the most boring, bland overrated festival in Holland, possibly Europe.

Uhm, why is she asking for trouble? Because of the way she dresses? That sounds like the argument that women wearing short skirts are asking to be raped, sexually assaulted or on the receiving end of physical / verbal harassment. In other words, a load of BS.

Re: what was the last gig you went to? in Chit-Chat
My last gig were Alerion (about as exciting as a soaking wet newspaper from last month), Shroud of Sorrow (quite enjoyable) and Android Soul (solid performance, despite technical difficulties and it being the first gig with their new guitar player) in Utrecht.

Actually, I’ve never bought a single DVD there. Plenty of stuff from the bargain bins though (5 for €10, or even 5 for €5), and I’ve been buying DVD’s since mid ‘99 so my collection keeps growing gradually.

Re: Collections (Geek alert!) in Chit-Chat
The only real collecting I’m into is music, and band shirts. I’m not paying insane amounts of money for 2nd hand items though, but when certain bands (T? included) release something new I generally buy it. So I have several T? CD singles, as well as several Iron Maiden picture discs.
Other than that, I have an extensive DVD collection, with my Anchor Bay titles (the limited editions of The Evil Dead (book of the dead), Evil Dead 2 (tin box), Army of Darkness (first 2 disc release) and Bad Taste) being my pride and joy.

I bet Chuck Norris has the entire Metallica catalogue, and listens to it exactly 666 times.
His movies are still shite though.

Re: Films that should have been great, but… in Chit-Chat
The first Matrix movie was good. The 2nd decent. The 3rd pretty much showed they had no idea how to tie up the story. Was it pants? Was it ever.
As for Indiana Jones, Star Wars etc. I think the backlash for the most part was due to the unreasonably high expectations. Most people saw the original films when they were younger, and have fond memories of them (I saw Indy 2 when I was a mere 11 years old), and they go in either expecting too much, or expecting to be disappointed, ie, a self-fullfilling prophecy.
Having said that, the “actors” that played Anakin were annoying (the youngest) or simply crap (the younger). However, I did like the 2nd half of Ep 2, and most of Ep 3, as the early signs of the empire popped up (stormtroopers, star destroyers etc.).
Die Hard 4 I did like, as it was good old fashioned over the top action, and Rambo 4 was rubbish.

Re: The Future of Music in Other Bands & Artists
Offer albums for sale without DRM, in FLAC format with and high resolution artwork (300dpi minimum), and at a reasonable price (less than the album would cost in the shops, ie, with regular printed artwork and pressed CD) and I might consider buying music online.
Other than that, I’ll stick to regular CD’s.

I went to Occultfest this weekend - with metal, more metal and the odd bit of rock. ‘twas fun, even though some of the bands were a bit meh, and the singer from Martyr being an attention whore.

Not possible - forever slave is undoubtedly at lot worse. Imagine the sound of a cat being skinned alive. Then imagine the sound of nails on a blackboard. Then imagine the mutant offspring if those sounds could mate. Then imagine somebody who attempts to sing (and I’m being very kind here) and yet sounds worse than the aforementioned mutant offspring.
I’ve seen my share of crap bands, some of them plain sucking (chillburn) or knowing they suck but try to distract the audience by having scantily clad women spray the audience with fake champagne (yes yobbo - I’m looking at you lot!), but none were as horrendous as forever slave.
And the worst part of it all? You may think you have a good understanding of just how bad they are, but it’s far, far, far worse than that.

Way back when blank cassettes first came on the market, apparently there was talk of a tax added to the price to compensate copyright owners for loss of revenue, so maybe they could introduce a similar tax elsewhere - for example all music downloads could be free but broadband connection would be taxed to make up the shortfall, or blank CD’s could cost more, or manufacturers of computers and/ or iPod/ MP3 devices could be charged a certain fee (which of course would be passed onto us!)
I do believe that artists (and by extension record companies) should be compensated for their work, but this tax idea is a bit off. For instance, if I never download and/or copy music, why should I pay extra for blank media, a broadband connection or harddisks? I have nearly 1.8 terabyte worth of external harddisks, and hundreds of DVD+R’s, all filled with backups of my photos. If I were to be taxed (and I already am on the DVD+R’s) just for the privilege of making backups of important files, where is my cut?

Re: T?-shirt reissues in Therapy? Buy, Sell & Trade
Well, I’d rather have a hooded sweater with very simple artwork, or a polo shirt which just says “Therapy?” on the left hand side in a small font. And what would be really great would be a “worker shirt”* like Autumn did some years ago.
* Fairly thick fabric, with pockets on the left and right hand chest and/or sleeves. It’s both stylish and usefull (a place to keep your keys / wallet, or in my case CF cards and battery packs).
