Re: Guns N Roses in Other Bands & Artists

I actually liked both Use your Illusions also.

I reckon that I will check this one out too - I am not expecting much and I think that this is exactly the way to approach it.

Would be brilliant if they could reunite the old line up, saw the new one live and wasn’t too impressed to be honest.

Last time I checked he was crying.

After this album, I doubt it - he is probably laughing his head off. Andy Sneap will be producing his new one - that guy at least knows how a thrash album should sound…

Bring on Priest Feast - Judas Priest, Megadeth and Testement live in Dublin, can’t wait.

Re: Metallica in Other Bands & Artists

He is so full of denial and shit at the same time, kind of like in his opinion towards the sound quality of St. Anger. AJFA did not influence bands due its sound quality, but due to the songs. Rick Rubin’s interpretation of Slipknot did not sound that shite. The more I think about it, the more I bet that Lars himself personally turned up the dialls…

No surprises in that interview - he sold his records, so why should her care about the fans who he has been screwing over for over 10 years now.

Re: Metallica in Other Bands & Artists

This morning on the train I was listening to the remaster of “Wake up dead” by Megadeth which was followed by “My Apocalypse” off of Death Magnetic. How is it that a 2004 remaster of an 80s tune can sound way better that a mainstream, multi-million release from 2008!!!??? I was shocked.

They should continue releasing their albums for video games.

Before I get backlash from the fanboys I just want to say that I think that their are two great tunes and some good moments on the album. Consider this constructive criticism as you will have to admit that the album simply sounds crap. I went online and signed the petition to have this remastered.

Re: Metallica in Other Bands & Artists

Yeah, I signed the petition - think it will fall on deaf ears though (kind of the like the production).

My favs on the album would be All Nightmare long and This Judas Kiss - both great songs.

Re: Metallica in Other Bands & Artists

The album distorts far too easily. I was listening to it last weekend and had to stop halfway through because my head could take no more.

Metallica’s Management think they are all sheep:

I totally agree - do you not find it odd that neither band nor Rick Rubin are willng to comment on this fiasco?

Re: Metallica in Other Bands & Artists

Jeez,

After trying to do the honest thing and buy the album I will probably end up seeking a free download of GH3 - I still can’t believe this cock up and that the band is ignoring it.

Ignorance is bliss:

Deaf Magnetic

Re: Metallica in Other Bands & Artists

In a good way? I keep reading that it is a thousand times better than the studio version.

Re: Metallica in Other Bands & Artists

The album overall isn’t that bad at all, not excellent now either mind you.

I got the my copy delivered yesterday also and threw it into the car this morning. The sound quality of this album is simply crap though. The drums are too loud / distorted and you can hardly make out the bass.

It is a shame really, because it would have been pretty good with a decent recording.

Re: Metallica in Other Bands & Artists

Sorry, was thinking Lionel Ritchie I guess ;)

“All Nightmare Long” - yeah, you can hear that he is taking his voice to the limit and almost failing on that one.

Re: Metallica in Other Bands & Artists

I don’t know, James really struggles on the chorus for “All night long”, it is almost like his voice is about to give way.

His voice has been shot since the self titled album.

Talk about killing off the joy after looking at page 3 of the sun ;-)

Re: Metallica in Other Bands & Artists

2 words for Metallica:

Andy Sneap! (producing the next Megadeth album)

Then again, I somehow see Lars being responsible for this Fuck up (super loud drums???), so maybe it wouldn’t have mattered who was behind the desk.

Poor dude who was mastering will probably struggle to find work after this adventure. How can a band of Metallica’s size and fame fuck up so often when it comes to sound?

Re: Metallica in Other Bands & Artists

So I am assuming from the comments above that the physical CD is mastered / mixed just as crap as what has been leaked so far? You would expect an act with the financial muscle of Metallica to at least be able to get that right.

I have been listening for almost a week now - it is an OK / decent album, nothing more, nothing less. People, get over the hype, there have been many far superior metal releases this year so far.

Posted on Thu, 11 September 2008 at 07:10

Re: Metallica in Other Bands & Artists

Technically speaking - no. Trivium, althought I hate them, are far superior on a musicianship level (exception maybe in Bass guitar, but hey, you can hardly hear Rob on the new stuff anyways) when compared to Metallica.

It is their songwriting that let’s them down (hasn’t really been a strong element of ‘Tallica either to be honest).

In all honesty though, do you not find it sad using Trivium as a yardstick for rating Metallica?

Posted on Tue, 9 September 2008 at 13:06

Re: Metallica in Other Bands & Artists

I also wonder whether I am finding it hard to give this an honest rating simply because it is Metallica that we are talking about.

As I wrote before, it is definitely a decent enough record, but I know plenty of bands out their who are mopping the floor with this effort.

I am starting to also automatically dislike due to all the fanboy crap I have been reading in recent days (“Metallica = Gold Standard”, “Metallica shits over all other bands”, “Metallica are back and rule” etc.). Such a joke.

Re: Metallica in Other Bands & Artists

I had a chat with a few fellow metal heads over the weekend and the general vibe is that all are simply happy that Metallica are playing heavy metal again.

It seems that St. Anger served it’s purpose, I have seen even the most cynical drop their guart to praise this album because that album was simply shite.

Time will tell with this one. I am still enjoying it for its finer, heavier moments but feel that their is a lot of average material on there.

Re: Metallica in Other Bands & Artists

After listening a few times would just about give it a 7/10.

Definitely some great moments on there although unfortunately many flaws also.

Re: Metallica in Other Bands & Artists

I didn’t think that I was slagging them in my last post ;-)

Anyways, in fairness, I could list up a lot reasons why they bring it on themselves.

Am going to have the album in rotation for a while now. At least unlike the last three, I have no problem in listening the tracks on this album back to back.

Re: Metallica in Other Bands & Artists

OK,

Have just given it my first spin - all in all it is a great improvement over anything Metallica has done since Justice as far as I am concerned (musically, that is - the self titled album has a much better production).

For me the highlight of the album is the fast bit in “All nightmare long”. All in all the thrashier numbers on this album sound alright, it will probably take a few more spins (some I will probably deem great, others mediocre).

The weakest track off the album for me is Unforgiven III - it is boring and just feels out of place on the album (as already commented above).

This is not my album of the year, nor do I feel that it comes close to what some of the other thrash acts are producing nowadays, but then again, I don’t really feel that Metallica fit well into the thrash genre anymore.

The overall production of the album sounds OK, the things that however ruin the listening experience a bit are:

- the snare drum, what was Lars thinking??? The rest of the kit is fine, but that key element (which he hits alot unfortunately) simply sounds weak

- Bass sound, OK Rob is audible enough if not somewhat hidden under the guitars but his bass just sounds like a distorted deep mess. Will Metallica ever learn the importance of Bass guitar (am also at a loss as to Rob’s writing contribution, sounds like he is holding back)

-James’s vocals, a great improvement over St. Anger, but you can still hear at certain points that the dude is struggling.

See how I like the album in a few weeks time, but for now I would say that it is a step in the right direction and hopefully a platform of things to come futher down the line from Metallica. I still think that Megadeth’s United Abominations walks over this effort with ease, but am happy that Metallica are at least trying again.

Maybe they should get Andy Sneap to engineer their next effort.

Re: Metallica in Other Bands & Artists

Well,

The effect on the music industry just represents the sign of the times. It is up to them to figure out how to deal with it.

I definitely agree with alot of what you have just written - I had forgotten that phase in the 90s, it really was bad.

Thearpy? is a band where I am definitely a first day buyer.

Re: Metallica in Other Bands & Artists

By “Cheaper” I mean even cheaper than they are right now.

Sure, if you shop around you can buy most new releases for €12 or less.

But with the amount of music I listen to, I still wouldn’t be able to buy all hard copies.

Re: Metallica in Other Bands & Artists

I already pre-ordered the album (God help me), am just downloading because I want to see what the rest of the album is like.

I agree with the principle, but unfortunately do not always have enough cash to buy the physical CD. I have certain artists where I always buy the hardcopy, others where I download and spread good feedback. You would think that after having the CD format on the market for approx. 30 years now that they would have gotten cheaper.

You seem to forget that Lars also tried to bring Napster users to court who had downloaded older albums (such as MOP) and not just pre-releases, so please stop buying into Lars’s crap - you are bigger than that. Everyone knows that he is fuming inside - hence the hair loss ;)

This is the same man who in the mid 90’s was telling the bands own thrash fans to grow up as they would never write that type of music again.

Re: Metallica in Other Bands & Artists

The whole album has leaked, will check it out later.

Apparently some dealer in France just started selling them - bet Lars is over the moon.

Re: Metallica in Other Bands & Artists

Well, now that they are trying to be metal again it is high time that “Tallica” fans become familliar with the rules:

Re: Metallica in Other Bands & Artists

Yeah, clip of Cyanide sounds a hundred times better than the live version. Still find the song a bit generic though.

I am no longer concerned about the quality of the CD after listening to them. Rob is even more audible.
