Re: Andrew WK in Other Bands & Artists
I saw Andrew W.K. last night in Manchester and it was one of the most unhinged and chaotic gigs I’ve ever seen. Such a mental hardcore following, and I haven’t seen a pit go off like that for years and years.
The band are crazy good - W.K. himself grins and rocks out throughout and seems to genuinely enjoy it.
It’s not perhaps the most cerebral of music. Certainly no Tool, but I haven’t felt that amount of sheer teenage testosterone and adrenaline fuelled fury and joy since the 90’s. (I may be looking the wrong places)
The crowd was made up of guys who find Motley Crue a bit too subtle and intelligent for them, and who will still be living with their mothers at the 20th anniversary tour. Half of them will have thought it was the best night of their life since they lost their virginity, the other half will think it’s the best night of their lives UNTIL they lose their virginity.
Whatever - despite the brain donors, it was an unbelievable gig. Loud, dumb and funny.

Re: The Wildhearts in Other Bands & Artists
I’ve decided today that I do like Chutzpah! after all.
I have to draw a diagram on an eyeball for an assignment, and the CD makes the perfect template to sketch around.

The whirring of the fan on the laptop - AMD chips are so much better.

Re: The Wildhearts in Other Bands & Artists
Certainly always seemed like he did.
I think Danny was back with the Yo-Yo’s about 6 years ago and they imploded on him. He was going to do something else, but I think he got sidetracked with booze and smack again.
Bags of charisma but a car crash character I think. I last heard of him on myspace a few years back saying he would be coming back with something, but I’ve not seen anything.
I never understood his coming back for the Scarborough Castle gig. He’d been in and out for years and was obviously not going to come back full time. Maybe they thought it would sell more DVDs.
THe Wildhearts are most definitely just there to make money for Ginger now.

Re: The Wildhearts in Other Bands & Artists
Does anyone know what’s happening with the Wildhearts? I’ve been flipping through pages on the WH message boards, and Ginger keeps saying that there will be no shows “for the forseeable future.” He also says that Scott is the only bass player he wants on stage with the Wildhearts (What happened between him and Jon Poole?) and when someone suggested a big group show with CJ, Rich, Scott, Stidi and Jon his respoinse was very blunt that there was “no way” that was going to happen.
Has there been some big mid-90’s style falling out gone off here? Is the record label giving them some contractual shit? Has he made enough money not to care for a while?

Re: The Wildhearts in Other Bands & Artists
The first 4 or 5 tracks are good - there’s some…must be destroyed B-side filler material and some Ginger solo album outtakes to round it off. Overall it’s probably their worst album I think.

Suicide Pact - You First - it’s fucking great. Read my entry in the sp-yf thread that I resurrected.

Free Bird by Lynyrd Skynyrd and Nothing Else Matters by Metallica - both played at my mate’s funeral yesterday - can’t get them out of my head now.

Re: Favourite UK Bands in Other Bands & Artists
I’m not going to list all my favourite UK bands, but there is a new band here which has been missed by everyone else.
Eureka Machines.
I think they’re really good, and they’re as independent as it gets, so check them out.

Re: Terrorvision are back! in Other Bands & Artists
I love Terrorvision, they’re great live - really looking forward to hearing the new album - better not sound anything like Laika Dog though - they’re shocking.
It’ll be really good to hear some new songs - I’ve been to Terrorvision’s last ever gig about 5 times now, so that set is getting a bit old.

Re: Gravity Kills in Other Bands & Artists
I don’t remember ever having seen any photos of them ever. If he did in fact wear a silly white fluffy hat, it would indeed make him look like a twat.
As it would anyone.
Dennis - I’m looking at you.

Jeez, there’s a name from the past - I bought their debut - thought it was wicked, then they disappeared into obsurity as The Gav says.

Alice in Chains - Dirt
I’ve never heard anything by AIC before. Fuck knows what I was doing in the early 90s, but I missed some crackers didn’t I? I think I could really get into them in a big way. I think I’m going to have a grunge year.

Re: Ever walked out of a gig? in Other Bands & Artists
A friend of mine asked if I wanted to go and see Los Campesinos at the Cockpit in November, they were bollocks, so I spent most of the evening sitting in the little room next door on the steps leading up to the stage trying to get a signal on my phone.
I also went to see the Wildhearts and Amen in about 2004 in Newcastle, got so drunk that I fell asleep in the toilet, got thrown out, and they wouldn’t let me back in without a ticket, so I bought another ticket on the door and went back in. That was a silly night.
That apart, I don’t think I’ve ever done a runner.

I saw the healiners and thought that it looked good. Therapy? Wildhearts, A, and Terrorvision on the second stage now please!

Re: Ask Terrorvision a question… in Other Bands & Artists
I’ve been to Terrorvision’s Last ever gig 4 times now. I’ve stopped believing them, and as such stopped buying gig tickets. What are the chances of a new album to re-invigorate my interest?
Was the First Last Ever gig at Penningtons their best gig too? It was mine.

When you say “I was right about the Whales and the dolphins,” What exactly was it that you had said that you were right about?

Re: skunk anansie in Other Bands & Artists
Honestly, I’m somewhat sketchy on the minutiae of the details, I know there were a lot of singalong hits belted out, and she was unbelievable! walking across hands in the crowd, climbing the rigs and going around the balconies, great great show.
I was trying to make the beer go in my mouth through the somewhat unconventional approach of opening it really really wide, tipping my head back and emptying beer over my face. I like the Cockpit - it’s my favourite Leeds night out. I’ve never understood why you’re not a fan :(
I’m back for the Wildhearts at Rios next month too.

Re: Best On-Stage Banter in Other Bands & Artists
I love the Andy and Mikehell show. I remember a long-term joke where depending on the boyband du jour Andy would threaten them with a Tabasco fistfuck. I’m sure Boyzone were on that list at one point.
I now quite often threaten people with a Tabasco fistfuck, but I’m yet to meet anyone who understands why.
Or take me up on the offer for that matter.

Re: The Wildhearts in Other Bands & Artists
I thought the same when I first spun it. There are a few interesting tracks on it. I heard The Only One before the rest of the album and my first reaction was “that’s not very Wildhearts” but it’s a big grower.
I like the first 4 songs - they run together nicely. I like Tim Smith - sonds like Machine Head, and I like You Took The Sunshine From New York, although it sounds like a solo album effort.
It’s probably about 50% listenable, but compared to the Wildhearts of old it’s really not up to much. Maybe once I hear it live it’ll make more sense, I’ve had that a bit recently.
Thing is, this is only the 6th proper full-length studio album, unbelievably, and everyone is due a dodgy moment now and again. COUGH *Shameless* COUGH so I wouldn’t write them off completely.
I think the biggest difference with the album is that it has been written much more collaboratively, so instead of Ginger going in to bat to write a Wildhearts album, you’ve got 3 or 4 different songwriters putting their oar in. It’s a widely held view that Ginger is probably the most talented songwriter of his generation, so it’s odd that he’s opened his cashcow to everyone to play with. It’s actually made me more interested to check out the likes of the Satellites and the Sinatras to seee where the writing influences have come from - so maybe that’s the idea behind it?
It lacks the classic Wildhearts stamp that you get and you know you’re listening to The Wildhearts. The Riff after Riff after Motherfucking Riff approach seems to have gone by the wayside, which is a shame.
The Wildhearts probably need to split up and take drugs for another 2 years, to re-ignite the early 90s creativity again, but it might be that they’ve grown out of The Wildhearts, not us?

Blackpool is good if you’ve got a thing for gangs of 40-something slappers with chlamydia, in pink cowboy hats.
Or smackheads.

Re: Little Boots question in Other Bands & Artists
iTunes was designed as a kind of “back-of-wardrobe shoebox” to hide dodgy tunes.
I also downloaded Lady GaGa but draw the line at La Roux - talentless ginger minger.
I’d gamble on the full album.

I ended up having to buy 2 fricking copies, I pre-ordered CD, but it didn’t turn up until today so I cracked on Wednesday and downloaded it too.
