Re: Joy Division film in Other Bands & Artists

That’s not a nap!

I think Dennis has taken an overdose of the antidote!

We need to give him something really disgusting to drink so he can vomit up the poison.

Anyone got any cans of Fosters or Carling?

Well, basically the film is based on the book by Deborah Curtis, so clearly she didn’t object to their lives being in the public eye. I imagine she’s found it quite cathartic and it has allowed her to give her side of events. I think the film has reflected this and that it is a good thing- it attempts to show things as they were, warts and all, and should help to refute any myths that have been created around Ian Curtis and Joy Division. It is difficult when you’re portraying real-life events to give full consideration for the feelings of others who were involved, but Ian Curtis and Joy Division have acquired a historical significance and I think that means they’re always going to be subject to attention. And in the case of ‘Control’, I think they’ve dealt with the subject quite well.

Re: Joy Division film in Other Bands & Artists

If they’d been more sensible with the money they wouldn’t have done everything exactly the same, surely!

Re: Joy Division film in Other Bands & Artists

The whole point is that they didn’t see themselves as business people. That’s why Factory crashed in the long-term but why they created some much in the first place. They’d never have made the impact they did if they’d acted like a conformist corporate record label.

Anyway, if you bought two copies of Blue Monday then it’s YOU that’s responsible for bankrupting Factory Records. I hope you can live with yourself.

Re: Joy Division film in Other Bands & Artists

Yes, I should think that more people know who Ian Curtis was now than did in the mid-1980’s.

I’m not sure whether this says something about the lack of awareness back then or that music is currently so poor.

It turns out it was just because they didn’t have a clue what they were doing.

It wasn’t JUST for that reason. One of the best things about Factory was that it encouraged the artistic side in the broadest sense, even when it inhibited profits.

Nothing wrong with that…

But I’d rather not be compared to the raving far-right Apartheid-loving Norris McWhirter.

Your Silent Face- New Order

Just to continue the debate about Barney’s lyrics, this one ends with the classic “You’ve caught me at a bad time, so why don’t you piss off”. Which is a bit out of keeping with such a lovely song.

Paul Bank’s lyrics are at least reasonably well written. Bernard Sumner’s are simply crap…like an eight year old’s poetry.

???

I really can’t see too much of a difference. You can pick holes in both if you’re wanting to be really awkward, but both have some strange lyrics, others a bit cheesy, occasionally some songs even seeming profound. The whole point I’m making is that both bands are top-class irrespective of the value of their lyrics.

Re: New Order Without Hooky in Other Bands & Artists

Well, considering he’s chuckling while singing the lyric I think we can take it as read that he wasn’t indulging in some kind of philosophical theory.

Interpol’s lyrics are hardly deep and meaningful, ‘enough with this fucking incense’ as an example, but they are still an extremely good band.

Re: New Order Without Hooky in Other Bands & Artists

I actually think that Barney’s bad dancing is quite a good touch, a bit of a laugh and quirky in a way. Same goes for the lyrics, I think he pretty much realises he’s not a poet. Sometimes they’re embarassingly awful, often quite funny- I mean I don’t suppose when he sang ‘Every second counts when I am with you, I think you are a pig, you should be in a zoo’, he was intending it to be taken TOO seriously…

To sum up, I think it was all part of New Order’s individuality, and the fact that they can’t carry it off now means it’s time for them to retire. For God’s sake, they’ve even started allowing companies to use their songs in adverts…

Re: New Order Without Hooky in Other Bands & Artists

They should have called it a day back in 1993 and stuck to their solo projects. New Order’s last two albums have been decidedly underwhelming despite containing a few decent efforts(Crystal, Krafty, Waiting fot the Sirens’ Call). They just can’t pull off the dance/rock crossover anymore, and for a band that were cutting edge back in the 1980’s it’s a little bit sad to see them struggling.
