Re: what was the last gig you went to? in Chit-Chat
Ok I take it all back; Paradise Lost were amazing last night in Manchester. So glad I went; really good atmosphere and they sounded good from where I was standing. Best I’ve seen them actually.
Hi Ruth-yes I was chatting to you and Hooch about festivals at some point but didn’t see you after that! If you want to check out PL I’d recommend Icon, Shades of God and Draconian Times to get you started-it’s their earlier stuff but I think if you like it you can forgive the goth-SOM style stuff that comes later. they did do a best of album (Reflections?!) once upon a time.
Both supports were excellent, too.

Re: What’s everybody reading in Chit-Chat
I’m now on book two of The Hunger Games. Recommended to me by about fifty teenagers. Not exactly a challenging read but still a page turner. Strong female protagonist who kicks ass (and shoots people with arrows). Would recommend, even though it is a kids’ book. Good dystopian fantasy-with obvious nods to Battle Royale.

Oh and the last gig I went to was Killing Joke in Manchester on Saturday. Now there’s a band with stage presence! ASTERRROOOOOOIIIIIIDDDD!

Saw Cathedral do one of their last ever gig last night with Paradise lost supporting. PL i don’t really know there songs but they sounded good just a case that the band had no stage presence at all and the sound was really thin and quiet. Cathedral however despite Lee’s voice being as horrible as normal fucking rocked… they were in a great mood and played everything a bit faster and harder as it was the final gigs and sounded huge so was a top night!
I’ve been a massive PL fan for years and have never seen them do anything more than a ‘good’ gig; I’ve never come away thinking ‘fuck me that was amazing’. I don’t know what it is about them. It’s such a shame because albums like Shades of God and Icon and Draconian Times are just amazing albums but they never do them the justice they deserve outside the studio. Well, not that I’ve ever seen anyway. I’ll probably be corrected by a million people here but I’ve seen them loads because I love the songs but I agree, the stage presence just isn’t there.

Get him when he’s in a good mood and tell him how you are feeling. He probably doesn’t realise you are upset. Dads have bad days too!

Re: Red Dwarf in Chit-Chat
I’ve been asked to analyse the structural and functional properties of clauses of a TV show or film as a task for my MA. I’ve analysed the opening 5 minutes of ‘The End’ and was pissing my sides laughing all the way through it. Probably failed…!
See folks, Red Dwarf is educational. And that’s a fact.
All my scientific knowledge comes from the show, too. Which is problematic since all the scientific knowledge on the show comes from the Junior Encyclopaedia of Space.

Re: Red Dwarf in Chit-Chat
It didn’t matter whereabouts they had the gags, it was always the tension between Rimmer and Lister that was funny. I think I saw the same documentary and they were discussing how they got a proper budget and went a bit crazy.
With regards to purchasing the box sets, when they first released them onto DVD (with the extras) you got a free Blue Midgit/Starbug etc. with some of them. Might be worth looking out for for when you want to recreate those scenes in your bedroom when you think nobody’s looking. Or is that just me?
I have the VHS collection from when they remastered it and when you put it together it makes a picture of Red Dwarf! How easily amused we were in the days before DVDs! I think I even spent a tenner on each one. I’ve seen them in the charity shops since!

Anything other than Series 7 and I’m happy. Although I don’t know, can they really capture those glory years now all the main characters are middle-aged Brit-com/soap stars?!
Fingers crossed…

Chris you are making me too jealous tonight.

Re: Red Dwarf in Chit-Chat
As an official Smeghead, I feel authorised to comment:
Series 1-6 Smegging awesome. As the Esperantinos would say, “Bonvolu alsendi la pordiston? Lausajne estas rano en mia bideo!”
Series 7 Smegging dire. Hermann Goering would have been more of a laugh.
Series 8 Smegging hell, that’s more like it. Schopenhauer was right, wouldn’t you say? Life without pain has no meaning.
Back to Earth Smegging hell, we’re getting desperate for a plot and partying less than Rudolf Hess. But it kinda works.
New series? I’m smegging excited. Please don’t smeg it up. Hopefully, this will be the viral strain Felicitus Populi, commonly known as “luck.”
Here’s my favourite EVER bit (I think; it keeps changing):
RIMMER: Is something amiss?
LISTER: (Slight quaver in him voice) Amiss? God no, what could possibly
be amiss?
RIMMER: You don’t think there’s anything amiss? I’m sitting here wearing
a red and white checked gingham dress and army boots and you think
that’s un-amiss?
CAT: No, of course not. It’s just that we thought you had gone nuts! We
were tryin’ to humour you.
RIMMER: I was just doing a little test — a little test to see if you had
gone crazy.
He abruptly tenses and lets out a horrible yell.
RIMMER: CHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!! If there is one thing I can’t stand it’s
crazy people.
LISTER: Well we’ve passed the test, Rimmer. You can let us out.
RIMMER: I can’t let you out.
LISTER: Why not?
RIMMER: Because the King of the Potato People won’t let me. I begged
him. I got down on my knees and wept. He wants to keep you here.
Keep you here for ten years.
CAT: Could we see him?
RIMMER: See who?
CAT: The King.
RIMMER: Do you have a magic carpet?
LISTER: Yeah, a little three-seater.
RIMMER: So, let me get this straight. You want to fly on a magic carpet
to see the King of the Potato People and plead with him for your
freedom, and you’re telling me you are completely sane?!

Re: Evil viruses and being a bit crap on computers in Chit-Chat
Thanks for all your help! I admit to being a bit clueless with computers (other than knowing how to use one) and I did try searching for some anit-virus things on the internet to get rid of it but I didn’t really want to start messing about. Thought it would be better to get the pros in…
I think I’ve learnt my lesson the hard way

Evil viruses and being a bit crap on computers in Chit-Chat
Fellow Wombles…apologies if you already know about this but I’ve just had it and have to warn you ‘cos I like you all.
Anyway, if you never listen to me about anything else in your life then LISTEN TO ME NOW!
I know it sounds bleedin’ obvious but please be SO CAREFUL about what you click on the internet. I have just had to get my computer fixed, at the cost of 40 quid, as I managed to download a virus from an American website (god knows how…it was one of those ‘take this survey’ pop ups and I clicked ‘no’ and it installed itself).
The virus is called XP Secuirty 2011 and it tricks you into thinking that it is a virus checker (oh the irony…) and that all of your programmes have gotten sick so it won’t let you open up ANYTHING.
Each time it opens itself it attaches onto something else and eventually your whole computer is contaminated. I tried to fix it myself but it didn’t work so had to take it to the computer shop.
Here, I was told that my anti-virus programme (from 2007) was way too out of date for the ‘modern’ viruses. I’ve updated it now but please do not let this happen to you! Hopefully you guys aren’t as thick as me but I’m so worried that this may happen to somebody else I’m spreading the word!!!!
Sermon over!

Re: Quitting Smoking in Chit-Chat
I went on the piss on Friday and didn’t have a single one!! Perhaps it’s because I was on rum and not vodka?!?
I am beginning to realise how smelly ciggies are! Did I smell like that?!?!
My main concern is turning into a nasty ‘reformed smoker’ so I’m going to shut up now!

Re: Quitting Smoking in Chit-Chat
I had 3 cigs last night. So much for a New Year’s resolution. Did I enjoy them? Yes. Am I now hacking up phlegm? Yes.
I blame the vodka. The vodka told me to do it.

Re: Memorable Journeys in Chit-Chat
never ever ever get on the intercountry European train between Czech Republic and Hungary without booking a seat. If you do, expect to spend 6 1/2 hours either a) stood up, b) sat in some angry German’s seat or c) sat outside the bog.

Re: what was the last gig you went to? in Chit-Chat
Pendulum last Wednesday in Manchester and John Cooper Clarke on Saturday in Liverpool.
Bit of a contrast but hey ho…was probably the oldest person at Pendulum by a good 10 years and was not impressed by the ferocity of the so called ‘wall of death’. Hope they have a safety certificate for that kind of thing! Back in my day we…er…forget it
Other than that, despite the £3.50 for a can of shite lager, not a bad night!
JCC was, as always, fucking hilarious. What was it that bore you? Was it some kind of bat? They can’t think of a good word for you. I can: tw*t!

You maybe aren’t happy in your current place if you are thinking about moving. If the new place is secure then I would go for it. But make sure you’ll still have a job in 6 months!! You could put your shares elsewhere, perhaps?
Can you fish around for hints about the new store, of course…
