The smell of pernod :S I once drank a litre of pernod in a weekend. I was not at all well, as far as I can remember.
Ohhh yeah  indeed. Aniseed-flavoured alcoholic drink? Whyyyy? Whose idea was that?
Actually, same applies to all drinks of a similar ilk … dangerous and best avoided. Ouzo, for one, and a number of years ago I also once had a … errr … lost weekend after drinking too much Turkish grape-spirit, after which I apparently spent some 36 hours lumbering around Istanbul trying to find where I was staying. By the time I finally found my hotel, I was missing one of my shoes and, curiously, a single tee-shirt sleeve. Not to mention several million brain cells. And the hangover, I’ve had NOTHING worse, before or since …

That sounds remarkably Welsh. But then I only had a few Welsh language lessons. When I was six. Thirty years ago. And I HAVE drunk far too much etihw gninthgil during the intervening period. Mostly in a graveyard. Cider doesn’t have give me severe nausea now, but ohhhh GOD does the smell of red martini do that …
Hmmmm … maybe I shouldn’t post this message, it’s rubbish … ooops, DAMN!

What other boards are you members of? in Chit-Chat
Title: What other boards are you members of?
I like this board, it’s one of the best I’ve visited thus far … good subject matter, good banter … above all in good spirit too. What you’re looking for in a board, really, natch.
Previous experiences of some message boards have not always been all that postive, though.
It’d be bad form to name names, I’m sure ;) … but I’ve found some boards to be incredibly cliquey, and some of the members (especially long-term) astonishingly proprietorial - issuing condescending or smug responses to contributions by anyone new, and putting rather too much effort into one-upmanship and coming across in their postings as “We’re wayyy too cool for you” (No you’re not! You’re boring twats! ) rather than encouraging interesting discussion (perish the thought!) or having a shared laff that isn’t exclusive to the “chosen few” …
All of this (quite apart from being downright irritiating … GROW UP!!!) is completely object-defeating!
Oooh. This is a cranky message, innit? Baaaad day at work. Sorry ;) To put a more positive spin on it, what boards are GOOD, and worth a visit? :)

Hey! in New Members (Introduce Yourself)
Title: Hey!
Hey, only just noticed this thread after having posted elsewhere. Bit slow, me. Must be me age. Or a very enduring hangover.
Anyway. Already used the following tale of woe elsewhere on the board, but it just seemed such an appropriate way to introduce myself …
I first heard T? through buying “Pleasure Death” on a whim (well, actually, it had quite a lot to do with the cover … ;) ) just after it came out, as part of a record buying spree on my 22nd birthday. Definitely one of my better whim buys, and I’ve been a beeg beeg fan ever since, that’s for sure!
I still have the LP, but not quite in its original format - an ex-girlfriend of mine melted it under the grill, by way of a … um … leaving present  Such heathen behaviour (albeit imaginatively vindictive) and just what you’d expect of someone who liked Phil Collins, and musicals including “Joseph and his Technicolour Dreamcoat” We clearly weren’t suited ;) Anyway, the outside edges of the record all curled up and it now makes a rather natty, if over-large vinyl-ashtray. I also love the dark irony of having an ashtray called “Pleasure Death” …
Here’s hoping you’ll put up with my postings, provided I don’t warble on too often about my often hapless existence ;)

Cheers for the welcome.
Ouch, that makes me sound positively ancient  I’m reliably (and often) informed that I don’t act old ;) Just relieved I ain’t the oldest…;)
More to the point though, the apparent age range speaks volumes about the appeal of this band, though, dunnit?

I’ve stopped buying SLF releases but like T? they remain brilliant live.Saw them for the seventh time in March when they finally came to Bournemouth & they were truly amazing.I will never tire of Jake’s between song mumblings & banter!
Damn right! Live, SLF still cut it BEEG time. As for Inflammable Material, I admit I like its rough and readiness, but my faves are the Peel Sessions CD (I think there’s two BBC sessions, actually) and the live one “Hanx”, which certainly does Alternative Ulster justice, and has a cracking version of Johnny Was.
T? Live, well they just get better. It amazes me the sound they manage to produce as a three piece, notably no less “big” than when they had two guitars.
Yay live music :)

Scary… SLF lost it years ago! Anyone heard Get A Life? Poor album!
Indeed, my point entirely. “Walk through Darkness” sounds like vintage SLF, the like of which we haven’t heard in a while. Thought “Flags and Emblems” (and “Get a Life”) were so-so, but admittedly the most recent lot of SLF albums have been seriously lacking…

Re: What’s EveryOne Listening To in Other Bands & Artists
Screaming Blue Messiahs - yeah, their live gigs were certainly quite something, uh … fervent! Their records were raw too, especially the early ones, despite the “clean” production values of the time. I saw them only once live, at the UEA in Norwich in 1987 - VERY good.
They did one more album after their sudden rise to prominence with “Wanna Be A Flintstone” (I remember seeing the video for that on mtv … extraordinary, both the video and the fact that they were on mtv at all!) I liked the last album, but it wasn’t very successful, record company wanted another “Flintstone”, I think (DOH!) and I think the usual “musical differences” came into play at that point. Bill Carter, the frontman and guitarist literally disappeared for several years, but apparently (haven’t gone on a seach for the site yet) has re-appeared with his own site somewhere offering new tracks for download. The drummer and bassist, highly competent musicians both, apparently formed their own band. I’ll have to go and have a look see …

a lot of pixies, frank black and fugazi at the moment
HEY yeah. Thanks, you’ve just prompted me to dig out my Fugazi cd’s, and am I glad I did. Cheers!
Otherwise, have been listening to the Jesus Lizard (gentle relaxed music ;) Gang of Four (their new re-working of their old songs - remarkably good, given that re-recording classic songs is often a hazardous business), and Killing Joke’s recent one (it’s a definite grower, and sounds more like their older stuff, which is no bad thing).
But best of all has been the Screaming Blue Messiahs … but I have to blow the dust off my record player to listen to them … hardly anything on cd available.

i like shameless, and ocfa
Always thought Shamless was about the weakest of all T? releases, but then all their albums have good things going for them, to a greater or lesser extent, so that’s not being too harsh… Personally I love OCFA … because it’s an album full of good songs - there’s only a couple that head towards “filler” territory - and it’s an album that benefits from listening to as a whole; from “Sprung” which gives you everything you want in an opening - full - track (fills you with adrelalin, sends fingers up yer spine, puts a big melon-slice grin on yer gob … starts proceedings with a BANG) through to Walk Through Darkness with it’s unexpected ending (Jake Burns would surely have KILLED to write a track like this … sounds more like SLF than they do themselves).
But above all I like it ‘cos it’s resonant throughout of all T? eras - there’s the BIG sound of more recent releases (and “Troublegum”), AND touches of the sparseness of earlier releases (I love the middle parts of Lose It All) and the more brutal stuff on Suicide Pact (I love that album). The influences are clear too, too many to mention but Killing Joke and Joy Division come to mind … but above all T? manage to incorporate so many sounds and yet still sound utterly distinctive, which is what I love about this band the best!!!

Plumped for the less obvious (sort of) / unreleased - can’t see the point in anything from Troublegum, much as I love it. Not only to hear older toons, but also hear them done NOW. Not re-worked, necessarily (I like the early stuff as it is) just as a fresh version! Nearly picks included “Limbo”, “Loser Cop” and “Die Like a Motherfucker”. And where’s “Punishment Kiss”? Also “Dancin with Manson” but eliminated that cos it’s on the audio section of the site! Heh, had difficulty in eliminating pretty much EVERY song at one pont, though.
Kind of hoped that “Isolation” would be a choice, always found that’s the kind of encore song that sends fingers walking up yer spine and leaves you with a stupid melon-slice grin on yer gob. Notice it hasn’t been mentioned, yet, however … not a popular choice?
Oh, sorry, this message is wayyyyy too long
