Screaming Blue Messiahs - yeah, their live gigs were certainly quite something, uh … fervent! Their records were raw too, especially the early ones, despite the “clean” production values of the time. I saw them only once live, at the UEA in Norwich in 1987 - VERY good.
They did one more album after their sudden rise to prominence with “Wanna Be A Flintstone” (I remember seeing the video for that on mtv … extraordinary, both the video and the fact that they were on mtv at all!) I liked the last album, but it wasn’t very successful, record company wanted another “Flintstone”, I think (DOH!) and I think the usual “musical differences” came into play at that point. Bill Carter, the frontman and guitarist literally disappeared for several years, but apparently (haven’t gone on a seach for the site yet) has re-appeared with his own site somewhere offering new tracks for download. The drummer and bassist, highly competent musicians both, apparently formed their own band. I’ll have to go and have a look see …

Otherwise, have been listening to the Jesus Lizard (gentle relaxed music ;) Gang of Four (their new re-working of their old songs - remarkably good, given that re-recording classic songs is often a hazardous business), and Killing Joke’s recent one (it’s a definite grower, and sounds more like their older stuff, which is no bad thing).
But best of all has been the Screaming Blue Messiahs … but I have to blow the dust off my record player to listen to them … hardly anything on cd available.
