Er… cool. Thanks! ;)

Yeah, I’ll check it out. There’s gotta be a way of learning those bastids!

Re: Any drummers out there?? in Musicians (Gear, Tabs & Lyrics)

Double kick drum is tough as fuck. I got a double pedal last year when I bought the Roland TD-20, and I’ve not been able to put a recognisable double kick beat together since! I should really put more effort in, but laziness and apathy get the better of me every time!

Seriously though, I’d love to get some tips on how to play them. Anyone know any useful sites?

Re: Any drummers out there?? in Musicians (Gear, Tabs & Lyrics)

“winged man-beasts” :)

yeah, the lyrics are quite conceptual and, well, bonkers. Their music is quite hard to get into, and I mainly listen to the drumming in their tunes, so you’re probably right Dennis!

What do you guys think of Mastodon’s drummer?
I’ve seen them live and he impressed me most, check out the link;

Has it been worth it?

I’ve had it set up for a couple of weeks, but am still trying to figure out the best set-up as I haven’t had a chance to play it a lot. I’ll need to get a small practise amp, as the kit doesn’t sound great through headphones.

I’m not too happy with the cymbal sounds - they don’t sound particularly loud and seem to get “lost” when playing. I’ve also got a double-bass pedal, which I’ve never played before, so I’m still trying to get used to it.

Question about the double pedal - how do the two beaters look when NOT in use? Side-by-side eachother, or one closer to the drum skin than the other? I’m not sure how much to tension them.

So, the jury is still out at the moment. Especially considering the money this thing cost. I should have a better idea in a few months time.

Re: Electronic drums - Roland in Musicians (Gear, Tabs & Lyrics)

Thanks for all the help, lads!

Anyway, I’ve gone and bought a set today off ebay for approx 3,600 euro. I hope it’s fuckin worth it! :)

Re: Drum Kits in Musicians (Gear, Tabs & Lyrics)

Mine is a Pearl export too. It’s actually not my first kit, but it’s cheap enough to get if you’re a novice, and good enough to keep when you’re an intermediate.

Eh, I guess that makes me an intermediate! :p

Electronic drums - Roland in Musicians (Gear, Tabs & Lyrics)

Title: Electronic drums - Roland

Anyone know much about these?

I’m seriously considering getting myself a Roland electric kit, probably the TD-20S model. Problem is that it costs about 3500 euros, and thats before the snare stand, hi-hat stand and kick pedal.

It’s the best out there at the moment (I think?), but is there a cheaper alternative that’s pretty similar? How about the TD-10 model? Any good?

I doubt I’ll be playing live with it so it will be a practice/recording kit. I don’t wanna upset the neighbours so I’m putting my regular kit away :p

Re: Leave a message or leave me alone in Musicians (Gear, Tabs & Lyrics)

I read somewhere that it was the message on somebodys phone who worked for A&M Records - when Andy rang him, he decided to sample it.

Re: kits in Musicians (Gear, Tabs & Lyrics)

I guess he’s asking if Neil’s piccalo snare gives the same sound, or “bong”, that Fyfe’s timbale snare did…

…and the answer is yes, as can be judged from the performance of Teethgrinder on the Scopophobia DVD.

“I Close My Eyes”, but it’s not a cover - it was written by Andy & Martin.

Re: The Sweeney lyrics? in Musicians (Gear, Tabs & Lyrics)

‘The Sweeney’ was the name of a cop show on BBC TV in the UK

I’ve since tried to make out the lyrics but Andy mumbles a lot of the verses and it’s almost impossible to make them out. :(

According to my notes it was played in Apr/May 96… but it says the chorus repeated “this is my world, baby, this is my fucking world”. This is obviously not the case having now heard the MP3. So, which song was this?

“I’m gonna kill your mother, I’m gonna kill your father, and blame it on you”. Where did those lyrics go?

Alex, I think you missed a post by Rene a few weeks ago. He posted a response he got from Andy regards the song you mentioned above.

Apparently, the song (at the time called ‘New Song In D’) was a very early version of ‘Joey’. The lyrics were totally different, but some of the music is similar. Having heard about 30 seconds of this live version, and knowing it was a ‘Joey’ prototype, it actually became obvious to me that it was an early version of ‘Joey’.

I’ll try to find the thread…

Cool.

Well, only 50,000 copies or so had the hidden tracks.

Ash hid 2 tracks on ‘1977’, which were murder to find.

Yeah, they put the 2 of them BEFORE the first track, so you had to rewind to find them. Then, if you rewound too much, the cd would stop, and you’d have to play track one and rewind all over again.

Still, I thought having a phone helpline for people who couldn’t find the hidden songs, was a bit much

Re: Fyfe’s drum sound on Nurse in Musicians (Gear, Tabs & Lyrics)

I’ve always heard great things about Sonor.

I guess Fyfe had a Pearl kit in “Divers” ‘cos he was poor, without all that Therapy? money rolling in!

:)

Re: Fyfe’s drum sound on Nurse in Musicians (Gear, Tabs & Lyrics)

Did Fyfe himself send you the letter?

I wish I had his kit, I’m kinda surprised there’s no 18” crash at all. There’s a big gap between 16” and 22”.

I wish I’d gotten that info before I bought my kit in 1998. I’ve a standard Pearl kit:

20” kick drum
14” snare
12” & 13” toms
16” floor tom
14” hats (Sabian)
16” & 18” crash (Sabian)
20” crash ride (Paiste)

If it wasn’t for the fact I’m poor, I’d change it all for Fyfe’s kit :(

Actually, I noticed from the picture on the “Divers” single, that he changed from Sonor to Pearl, so at least it’s something like my kit!

“latin percussion timbale”, eh? I must look for one of them!! :)

Cheers.

Re: Fyfe’s drum sound on Nurse in Musicians (Gear, Tabs & Lyrics)

Yep, it’s a snare with it’s heart ripped out!!!

Posted on Thu, 27 March 2003 at 22:52

Re: Fyfe’s drum sound on Nurse in Musicians (Gear, Tabs & Lyrics)

Do you mean the actual snare sound, or that drum he uses that “kinda” sounds like a snare? i.e. the one used on Teethgrinder, Hypermania etc…

I have no idea what that particular drum is called, but you can recreate it’s sound by getting a second snare and taking the metal rail from underneath out, and tuning the top skin very tightly.

But that’s just my amateurish messing about. If another drummer knows for sure what that drum is called, I’d sure like to know!

Re: ~ Fyfe’s drums ~ in Musicians (Gear, Tabs & Lyrics)

Fyfe’s been known to use a Pearl as well. He definately did while in the band ‘Divers’ maybe he couldn’t afford a better one!
How does that work anyway? When he left Therapy? did he take his kit, or does it belong to Therapy? ?.

Re: Drums in Musicians (Gear, Tabs & Lyrics)

Yeah, Nausea’s really cool. So is Punishment Kiss ‘cos you can play it Fyfe’s way or Graham’s way. By the way, Hypermania is a bastard to play - I’ve since tried it, and failed! Meat Abstract is essential playing if you want to piss your neighbours off - 4 minutes of pure, non-stop bass drumming - heaven!

Re: Simple is often the best way in Musicians (Gear, Tabs & Lyrics)

Yep, Fyfe is spot on…’Teethgrinder’ is without a doubt THE most difficult song I’ve ever tried to play on drums, simply impossible. And let’s face it, it’s a shit song with Graham’s drums. Has anyone listened to Fyfe’s drums in Divers? They sound like the beatings of a man who is severely pissed off such is the unbelievable force he exerts. I always have great fun trying to match the noise level of his drums when playing those songs. Absolutely brilliant! By the way, Opal Mantra is kinda hard, but get’s a lot easier the more you play it.
