I have no f$%&ing idea why the reviews here are so bad.

I’m positive Andy once said on the whole (so I’m obviously not pointing the finger at you) Germany is the country where the people at gigs are most pro-Troublegum and least pro-anything else by Therapy?. He said it in a half joking manner though, so I’m not sure what to make of it.

Fan made stuff in General Therapy? Topics

Got any fan made T? stuff? There was the Gemil my sister made, I’ll see if I can find the pictures back. I also saw some Gemil cookies on Facebook at one point, yum!

Some years back I made this:

Yeah what a stupid idea to record an album with great rock tunes that everyone loved/loves which was critically acclaimed and sold by the bucket load leading to high up festival billings and all round general greatness. Absurd notion.

Except, if the band didn’t feel inspired to do so (which they didn’t) it wouldn’t have been so great. I think another album like Nurse, Crooked Timber, Troublegum, Infernal Love would be cool too but I just don’t think they could’ve done it, and I see them as greater musicians because they’re constantly broadening their horizons. You may not see Therapy? sell out huge stadiums right now (who cares anyway?), but who knows, people might pick up on this much later (as it often happens with things of great quality), so T?’s experimental albums could last longer than Motorhead and AC/DC part MMXIII (both great bands, btw). Therefore, I don’t think of it as a possibility. I think Andy said in an interview (it’s on Youtube and it has 5 parts, shouldn’t be too hard to find) that the band might’ve fallen apart if they had done that. The result of being commercially successful or trying to be it was Semi-Detached, which doesn’t bother me as much as the fact it seemed to have been made under a lot of pressure from the record company (which is why they made the radical SPYF later). The one time T? tried to stick to what they were familiar with was One Cure Fits All I believe, which had some great tracks but also a couple less-inspired ones which I don’t think they were very happy about. Also, the changing of the drummers had a lot of effect on them, as did Martin becoming a part of the band and then leaving again. You could say the change of sound happened naturally, for a bit.

chr1s wrote:

Yeah, TG has been done… No need to do another. Personally, i think the best thing about T?, is the fact that each and every album sounds completely different.

Amen! Amongst my other absolute favourite bands are Annihilator, Alice Cooper and Paradise Lost. You can figure out I like change. As long as it’s done well, I think variety in material proves a band has more musical talent (a bad example of this would be linkin park, lol). Sadly most people just want more of the same.

I don’t like much dubstep, certainly not from the last 5 years or so, but I love dub, that’s why I wanted to point out the difference is all.

I can imagine you would! x’) It’s ok, I just wanted to clarify I was reacting to people who actually said Therapy? had dubstep influences rather than just dub, I probably should’ve made that more clear.

garymartian wrote:

At least Therapy?’s dubstep influences are played by the musicians in the band, and are subtle.

There they go again, we just went over this! ;)

I know you’re kidding, but I’m still going to point out I like Andy’s vocals and lyrics waaaay too much for them to give them up :P That said I do like the instrumentals, Big Cave In most of all. Unique music that.

You’re confusing Dub and Dubstep mate, and despite the name Dubstep didn’t evolve from dub, it’s (well was back in 98 when the term first came about) a sort of combination of the darker elements of drum and bass and 2-step (a form of garage (not garage rock though) which is even shitter than most garage) before it evolved into what you hear today, DUB on the other hand is the forerunner to remixes (in fact a lot of the early dub pioneers were soundsystem engineers, King Tubby was an electrician and soundsystem operator), it’s a subset of reggae and often involves just the rhythm section of a track (sometimes cut up and re-dubbed) with loops of other instruments and sometimes snippets of vocals dropped in and out with a heavy use of reverb , echo and delay. It quickly became very popular within reggae so you got bands and producers making dub albums without using a vocal track as the starting point (the fact Jamaica didn’t have any copyright laws at the time helped a lot initially).
Basically Reggae has always had very very deep and heavy bass, dub took this a bit further and that’s why dubstep with it’s heavy heavy basslines got dub in its name.

I’m not so much the one confused, I did see people use the term dubstep in relation to T? (so maybe they’re the ones confused?), which is why I specifically asked him about any dubstep influences he heard (I’m pretty sure he knew about the difference as well and would’ve told me if I screwed up using those terms). It’s true I assumed dub and dubstep were related but the dubstep remarks were the ones that really bothered me ‘cos I was sure what it was, and I think it is shit =)

In the end, let’s just be happy T? doesn’t sound like Korn?

Re: Funny lyrics in General Therapy? Topics

Really? I didn’t know that. My grandfather fought in the resistance and was almost killed a few times too, I just smirk at that line because I can relate to it and can imagine saying it to certain people (read: parasites). I think that’s what Andy intended as well because he’s very good (imo) in writing lyrics people can relate to in many different ways, which is one of T?’s prime strengths.

Re: what was the last gig you went to? in Chit-Chat

Yay, I nearly froze to death on the way there but I made it to the Thin Lizzy gig at Antwerp last Sunday. They were much better than at the Lokeren gig last summer, and I already liked them there. The ‘new’ guitarist is brilliant, he really made the feeling of a Gary Moore concert come to life again at times. All was perfect save for some guy who threw beer on stage and (I’m just assuming it was the same guy) also threw almost an entire pint over my head as well, and I didn’t even care for that much, lol. It was good seeing Ricky again, too, and I believe he spotted my Therapy? shirt in the crowd, there’s no way to be sure though, lol.

Funny lyrics in General Therapy? Topics

Gotta love the occassional humour in Therapy?’s lyrics. Music that cracks me up from time to time always gets a plus (hence why The Fun Lovin’ Criminals are probably my next favourite band right after Therapy?). Which of Andy’s quirks still make you laugh even after all this time?

‘My grandfather… was cannon fodder’ still gets me every time =)

You listen to a fair bit of dub Simon, do you hear these dub elements people have mentioned? Cos I don’t really and I listen to lots of dub, might just be my bass isn’t set high enough though. I’m enjoying the use of space in this one as well, given that aside from reggae / dub I mostly listen to what’s termed post rock nowadays I hear it used a lot, nice to hear it within a more aggressive rock sound again, as I felt CT employed it as well.

A friend of my is a DJ. I was curious about all these ‘dub elements’ people keep mentioning so I let him listen to a couple of tracks. He didn’t hear any of it at all, then sent me a link of Korn’s dub album for an example (which I wouldn’t touch with a six foot pole even if it was preemptively nuked). Suffice to say it might work to inspire them, which is good, but the music is still completely different, and that’s good too.

Re: Songs that sound like Therapy? in General Therapy? Topics

Lol, it’s possible, but I don’t know for sure. It just sounds so distinctively Fyfe that I just assumed he came up with it. Of course, he could have built his drum style around that, so I’m not denying anything. If it’s true that would be a great case of Therapy?ception, lol =)

The Presidents are a lot of fun live, I’ve seen them twice so far (once at Lokeren, the other time at Pink Pop Classic when Therapy? was also there).

Re: Movies That Are So Bad They’re Good in Chit-Chat

I second that, I need to see the sequels as well because apparently Burt gets a more prominent role in them. And that while I was almost 100 percent certain he would die in the first movie.

Re: Whats the next gig you want to go to? in Chit-Chat

Hell yeah, just found out Thin Lizzy is playing at the Biebob, very close to where I live, soon. It’s extra cool because in the Biebob you’re always very close to the stage.

Re: Movies That Are So Bad They’re Good in Chit-Chat

I don’t think Tremors was bad, it just tries (and succeeds) to be a hilarious horror / comedy which I think is the category of movies that fits this thread best :p Nothing is of exceptional quality, but it’s still really entertaining. Especially Burt is downright hilarious.

I did vote for Living In The Shadow for the Afrekening though, maybe something good will come of it *wishful thinking at its best*

Indeed, the drums are almost identical to Meat Abstract. That one can’t be coincidence.

Probably. Sofie Lemaire (?) advertising the upcoming single and album during de Tijdloze got my hopes up though.

I’m still trying to figure out if the Belgian radio is playing it… But I don’t feel like listening to it the entire day just to miss it by a minute :p

Re: Songs that sound like Therapy? in General Therapy? Topics

Whoa, that’s crazy. I never imagined there to be so many x’)

Yesterday when I was listening to Rage’s album ‘Strings To A Web’ my dad said at one point ‘hey, this sounds like Therapy?’ (about the song ‘Tomorrow Never Comes’). He didn’t mean a certain riff, just the overall sound / style of that song at least, ‘cos on the whole Rage and Therapy? are quite far apart in terms of style ;) I admit it’s slightly reminiscent of High Anxiety-era Therapy?

Re: Whats the next gig you want to go to? in Chit-Chat

Want to see Therapy? in the AB… It’s been so long =) I also wanna see Iron Mask because their new album is brilliant and they play together with At Vance, another brilliant band. Still have to wait for those gigs like 4 months or so though.

Ok, since no one has guessed yet, the Absynthe Minded song = a calm version of Rock You Monkeys. If you don’t hear it, look up the Kick Out The Jams sessions :p

Songs that sound like Therapy? in General Therapy? Topics

It’s already been mentioned a few times on this board the main riff from Sister sounds an awful lot like U2’s Vertigo… And I tend to agree.

Here’s another one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PJlOhi-moUE This is basically one of Therapy?’s riffs played slower and on an acoustic guitar. Just wondering if other people will hear it before I say the name of the song :p I just realized it when I was rewatching the acoustic ‘Kick Out The Jam’ session, it’s basically exactly the same when you listen to that version… Shocking! (to me, at least)

I’m not judging whether it’s coincidence or not and that’s not *really* what this thread should be about, I just thought having this kind of thread would be interesting. Pretty sure we had one at some point but I couldn’t find it back.

I’ve always hated the x-files.

Another one that fits this category just fine: all the Tremors movies.
