Re: Metallica & Lou Reed in Other Bands & Artists

The Pitchfork review gave me a laugh:

http://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/15996-lou-reed-metallica/

eg “The Internet had all the evidence it needed to preemptively crown Lulu the Worst Album of All Time. But even in that regard, Lulu disappoints”.

I’m gonna have to check it out! Pity it’s not on Spotify

Re: Coming up in Whelans ( Dublin )… in Other Bands & Artists

There’s a gig on 30th Nov in Whelan’s that I’m mighty excited about - Jeff Mangum of Neutral Milk Hotel.

Was actually down in Whelans for the first time in a long time last week seeing The Mountain Goats; top gig

The Monitor - Titus Andronicus

I forgot about that one - that would definitely be in my top 10 as well. Also forgot about How To Destroy Angels, that’d be in there too. And there’s a late entry that I’ve been listenin to a lot - “Bastard” by Tyler The Creator. His stuff is like a cross between Eminem and Wu Tang Clan - really dark hip hop. His only 18 years old as well, think he has a big future.

Good to see Andy is gettin into Witch House what with Salem and oOoOO

Re: Local Music (For Local People) in Other Bands & Artists

I mentioned these guys in another thread, but my fav Belfast band at the mo are called Girls Names. They play jangly garage rock with a dark edge. Sound a bit like Interpol / Joy Division/ Editors. Both their EPs are on Spotify

Re: Ever walked out of a gig? in Other Bands & Artists

I walked out of a Snow Patrol gig before they got really big (I’d never even heard of them at the time).

They were playin Belfast the same night as British Sea Power (a band I wanted to see). The two bands decided at the last minute that instead of taking punters away from each other, British Sea Power would support Snow Patrol instead.

British Sea Power were great, so I thought I’d give these guys Snow Patrol a go. Thought they were utter shite and left before the end of their first song :-/

Re: 2009 End of year Best of list in Other Bands & Artists

Top Five Albums:

1) Manic Street Preachers – Journal for Plague Lovers
2) Atlas Sound – Logos
3) The Mountain Goats – The Life of the World to Come
4) Therapy? – Crooked Timber
5) Animal Collective – Merriweather Post Pavilion

As for movies, can’t really put these in order, but:

Moon
Triangle
A Perfect Getaway

Were all good.

Just gave a few songs on their MySpace a listen. Quite good. Much more mellow than Infernal Love, or at least what I heard was. Doubt I’ll look into them further, but they didn’t sound at all bad.

Aye, they are a lot more mellow than T? - but they defintiely have that Infernal Love / Nick Cave kind of mood. I think the new album is great, but they’re a serious gloom fest!

Re: What’s EveryOne Listening To in Other Bands & Artists

I’m listening to the new Black Heart Procession album ‘Six’ - it’s awesome.

I know people hate being told what to listen to, and generally never follow up on recommendations, but I’d seriously recommend any T? fans of Infernal Love give it a listen - like Infernal Love, ‘Six’ is also all dark ballads about love lost, losing your mind and drugs.

In Rainbows and The Eraser were both great. And Jonny Greenwood’s There Will Be Blood soundtrack is great as well - you can listen to it on Spotify

Re: What’s EveryOne Listening To in Other Bands & Artists

I was listenin to the There Will Be Blood soundtrack a good bit over the weekend - Jonny Greenwood from Radiohead is behind it.

Sounds nothin like Radiohead though, more like something from Requiem For A Dream

Yeah, I had a look - haven’t “tried it out” yet though ;-)

Re: Make a muxtape in Other Bands & Artists

Yeah, what Allroy said. Muxtape was offline for a few months cos of the legal issues, its relaunch as a website for bands means it isnt nearly as good as it was for the average punter.

Also, you can make playlists for people on Spotify, which is basically what Muxtupe was all about anyway (except you can only choose songs that are already on Spotify). Charlie Brooker has a pretty funny take on it here:

Re: Bands Playing The Whole of An Album In Sequence in Other Bands & Artists

Oh yeah, another *kind of* playback I saw was Blur on their greatest hits tour - they played every single they’d ever released in sequence. Had the really weird and, again, underwhelming effect of finishing the night with “No Distance Left To Run” :-/

Re: Bands Playing The Whole of An Album In Sequence in Other Bands & Artists

I thought the Manics’ playback was great - just as good as the second half of the set (saw them on Saturday).

I think I’ve mentioned this on here before, but All Tomorrow’s Parties have specialised in live album playbacks for a few years now - since 2005 I think. For example, Spiritualized are performing ‘Ladies & Gentlemen We Are Floating in Space’ live in London soon:

http://www.dontlookbackconcerts.com/

I’ve seen a few album playbacks - Slint doing Spiderland, Sonic Youth doing Daydream Nation and Dirty Three doing Ocean Songs (all at Primavera Festival 2007). Was a bit underwhelmed with all of them to be honest. Maybe it’s cos they were doing old albums, whereas the Manics’ was obviously their new one and it felt like a really special event.

But anyway, to answer your question (!) I think Pink Floyd doing Dark Side of the Moon or The Wall would be great, cos the songs on their albums all flow into each other. Tool performing Aneima would also be great for similar reasons

Re: Best Albums of the Year (so far) in Other Bands & Artists

Wow, I forgot that Eels had a new album out. Will have to check it out.

My list so far is:

1 - Manic Street Preachers - Journal for Plague Lovers
2- Therapy? - Crooked Timber
3- Animal Collective - Merriweather Post Pavilion
4- Mastodon - Crack the Skye
5- Sunn O))) - Monoliths & Dimensions

Re: Mastodon in Other Bands & Artists

Dermot wrote:

I’ll be seeing these guys support Tool in Dublin next month. Never heard of ‘em

I never got to see them support Tool (barely made it to the venue in time to see Tool themselves!) so Mastodon continued to pass me by.

Then I was playing pool in a bar last week when a song came on the jukebox. It sounded to me like a perfect hybrid of Soundgarden and Tool (in fact I wasn’t sure if it might not have been a song by one of those two bands). I rushed over to the player as the song was ending just in time to find out that the song was Oblivion by Mastodon. So I checked out Crack The Skye, and I think it’s f**king great! First new “heavy” band I’ve got into in years :-)

I’m heading to the Saturday gig too Fiona. Only found out last night about the two halves thing… I’m pretty pleased about that to be honest cos I love the new album now

Re: Local bands taking over in 2008!! in Other Bands & Artists

I haven’t actually seen them live before, but they’re supportin the Manics at the Ulster Hall in a couple of weeks so I’ll get to see them then

Re: Manic Street Preachers in Other Bands & Artists

The only album that completely passed me by was Lifeblood.

I just think their approach towards this album is typically Manics - doing something that they know will piss people off (eg saying they’re going to split up after selling 20 million copies of Generation Terrorists and then not, Wire’s comment about Michael Stipe, playing a huge expensive gig in Cuba for no real reason etc). I love the Albini production, the samples, everything about it is just great (even Wire’s *awful* singing voice seems to fit!)

My favourite song is track 12 (Virgina State Epiletic Colony) - anyone else think it *really* sounds like “Waking Up” by Elastica though??

Re: Manic Street Preachers in Other Bands & Artists

Good interview with them here:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/2009/may/08/manic-street-preachers

Was listening to the album for hours in the car today - it’s really grown on me, I think it’s fucking brilliant now

Re: Manic Street Preachers in Other Bands & Artists

I’ve just finished my first listen… will reserve judgement until I hear it a few more times. But I do think it has a bit of a Holy Bible feel on a lot of the tracks. The post punk guitar, the samples, the spat out streams of words, the Richey Edwards lyrics.
