Re: Inception ( the movie ) in Chit-Chat

Yeah one of the best films, with a totally origonal plot. that I’ve seen for ages.

I’m positive it’s the kind of film you can watch a few times and still pick new things up from it.

Re: Anyone techy out there? in Chit-Chat

I’ve juse re-read your origonal post - then saw the post underneath.

Do you know how to remove the battery, memory and Hard Disk drive? I would remove all of those things, with the PSU attached try and turn it on and see if the behaviour differs at all (system beeps etc.).

Who is the machine by?

Re: Anyone techy out there? in Chit-Chat

First and foremost - get your laptop away from the pikey monkeys at PC world, they haven’t got a fecking cluck what they’re talking about.

Your Virus, if it has been diagnosed correct;y will be hiding in the boot sector of the HDD meaning even if you formatted the disk and re-installed Windows (or UNIX?) the virus may still be able to get into the memory and cuase curruption again.

Do you know how to make a bootable CD? You could use something like BartPE etc. which will boot a slimmed down Windows desktop from CD & then you need to run something like McAfee’s Stinger to Nuke the virus. Once the CD boots you can run the McAfee stinger to detect and nuke the virus.

http://www.help2go.com/Tutorials/Windows/Create_a_Windows_Boot_CD … ue_CD.html

You can download the BartPE from:

http://www.nu2.nu/download.php?sFile=pebuilder3110a.exe

& McAfee’s Stinger (Antivirus):

http://download.nai.com/products/mcafee-avert/stinger1001870.exe

I realise this all may seem daunting but take you time and if you have questions ask - certainly don’t go back to PC world to be bent over the counter and…

Re: Avatar in Chit-Chat

I had absolutely no interest in seeing this film what so ever having seen numerous trailers, but a friend dragged me along to the iMax in Cardiff on Saturday where we saw it in 3D - I was completely blown away to be honest.

The story/plot is pretty wank, and it’s your usual ‘good versus bad’ underlying plot with the typical love story element. I’d say a 9 year old would love it, although be warned it’s 163mins run time so hopefully your 9 year (son/daughter) would be mesmerised by the special effects and the stunning landscapes.

If you can, go and see it in 3D - as I say I was completely blown away by the visual effects and the fact the 3D really worked very well.

Re: PC Question in Chit-Chat

Have you tried power cycling the router? Do you have a filter attached to all the telephones in your property? Have you tried attaching the router to another telephone socket if there is one?

I very much doubt you’ll see anything noticeably wrong by connecting to the router itself, sounds like a synchronisation issue - if you reboot the router you’ll force a re-sync between the router and the exchange. ADSL suffers badly from a bottle neck with bandwidth at the exchange, I notice my broadband gets a lot slower around half term school holidays as all those lazy bastard kids are on xbox live sucking bandwidth.

The cabling to your property from the exchange will have a big factor on bandwidth as well, but as you’ve said it’s been getting slower so I’d start by checking the things I mentioned above.

What kind of bandwidth are you getting?

Yeah I’ll second Orange. They also offer the best insurance of all mobiles - it’s called Orange Care. Usually if you break your phone, and you have insurance, you have to send your phone off to be repaired but Orange care provides you with a new phone the next working day.

I have their combined Mobile & Broadband package - I get good download speeds at home

Credit or debit guys?
I don’t intend on getting a credit card, don’t want debt thanks!

No you’ve completely misunderstood me Colin, my point is any transaction above £100 purchased using a credit card is automatically insured under the ‘goods and sales’ act. This means if you bought a laptop lets say on Wednesday, and the company you bought it from went into administration (bust) on the Thuirsday beofer they ship you your laptop but they have taken your money, then you could claim the money back from the credit card company.

You have the cash so the balance could be paid off the credit card as soon as you get the laptop

Good bikes, bet your chuffed - hope you got a good deal

Re: Laptop advice in Chit-Chat

Colin - if you purchase a laptop from PC world, discount or not you will be paying over the odds for a similar if not better spec’d laptop available online.

As Gav says, ebuyer.com or Dell are very good recommendations for places to start looking - just remember try to use a credit card :)

Re: Laptop advice in Chit-Chat

That budget seems pretty good to me, you may stretch to a MAC but it will either be second hand or reconditioned/refurbished. A good site to check, although there’s nothing in your price range at present:

http://store.apple.com/uk/browse/home/specialdeals/mac

If you find good deals I can give you a heads up on whether they’re any good or not - all I’ll say is though whatever you buy make sure you purchase it on a credit card so your transaction is insured. So many companies are going under at the moment it’s untrue.

We use Dell computers where I work, the Inspiron range they do (for home/personal use) are very sturdy and well spec’d for the money. It’d check the Dell site if you can’t find a MAC, they come with a flavour of Unix now (which is free) if you want away from Microsoft

Re: Mountain Bikes in Chit-Chat

I just found this on fleBay:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/kona-cindercone-2007-mountain-bike-button-a … hash=item2 50389016076&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=72%3A1688%7C66%3A2%7C65%3A12%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318

Mine must be a 2008 then as mines blue in colour and the one above is Orange - I still think they’re great looking bikes and they ride really well

Re: Mountain Bikes in Chit-Chat

Well you sound in a pretty similar, if not exact situation to what I was in when I was searching for a bike. I only tested a few but I could tell the difference straight away when I tried a few Kona’s, it just felt like the ‘right bike’. I went for the Cinder Cone as it had the best mid range components (Dart 3 Rock Shox forks and Hayes Hydraulics) which on their own I read good review(s) on, with the plan that if this turned into another ‘fad’ I could sell the bike on quite easily.

I would seriously try as many bikes as you can before taking the plunge and buying one, at the end of the day the final decision has to be down to you though mate!

It really is a case of you get what you pay for here.

The link above to the GT looks good, it’s a well spec’d bike - I tried to find some reviews and came across this:

Re: Mountain Bikes in Chit-Chat

Ensure you get Hydraulic disc brakes, so many ‘entry’ level bikes come with non Hydraulic brakes (work like old school bike brakes with wire) and they’re pants.

I was pretty much like you and wanted an entry level Hardtail, I tested makes like Specialized, Giant, GT but I opted for Kona in the end - I have an 07 Cinder Cone which is pretty well spec’d and I negotiated hard and got it for £500 with a years free servicing from a local dealer. Really though what you go for is personal choice, you can read reviews till your blue in the face, you need to like the way it rides.

You can buy old stock from quite a lot of places (08 bikes now), and save a few ££ - some good places:

Do you have any brand in mind?

Re: Kickin’ it old skool: 8bit to 16bit in Chit-Chat

I started of with a Master Systems as well!

I think my console career goes something like

Master System
Game Gear
Gameboy
Mega Drive
SNES
Mega CD
PC
Playstation
Gameboy Advance
xbox 360
psp

I’m not really into gaming like I used be but your can’t beat a bit of retro gaming, I played Alex the kid a while back as my flat mate has a Master System but it just wasn’t the same

OK - didn’t realise it was Vista, sorry bogus info then - root kits can’t infect Vista…

Re: Internet problem in Chit-Chat

Hmm, I’d try running the software I linked above - even though you’ve restored the files to a previous point, the ‘offending’ file may still be operational on the system and will need to be removed.

Re: Linux Ubuntu in Chit-Chat

EeePC is essentially a laptop with a ‘solid state’ drive rather than a traditional Hard Drive - I only asked as you mentioned it came with Ubuntu, due to the expense of Solid State memory Unix is generally the OS of choice with regards to the technology as it doesn’t require much space to install.

As it’s still fairly new, large solid state disks are still expensive - this is why Unix is chosen here as you can install an OS for a few hundred MB, where as Windows requires a few GB. I’m not sure how true this is but I’ve heard solid state drives draw more power, hence in a device like a laptop the battery may not last very long (they even require power once the laptop is switched off) - plus they wear out apparently after they’ve been read/written although this could take a few years…

You can download Ubuntu, burn the ISO file to DVD then boot any computer from the DVD and run the OS without the need to install it as you get an option to run from CD/DVD (doesn’t touch your hard disk), so you could try it for yourself before you take the plunge and buy the laptop:

Re: Linux Ubuntu in Chit-Chat

Yeah it’s very easy to use - it comes with the best desktop platform available for Unix/Linux, hence it’s very popular. If you can use a MAC then your sorted and OSX etc is essentially unix underneath

Get yourself Open Office and your laughing - is it an EeePC your buying?

Also to get rid of the Trojans, they’re most likely root kits, use the following (again free):

Re: Internet problem in Chit-Chat

Sounds like Malware to me, your browser is being hijacked. It may be a dodgy cookie (not the edible on this occasion!) or a key in he registry - try downloading the following:

http://www.lavasoft.com/products/ad_aware_free.php

Install and run a Full scan - it should pick up numerous files in your browser cache and hopefully cure the problem above.

Re: Legal advice needed in Chit-Chat

If they pressured you into making a statement that says to me that there’s a lack of evidence, if you withdraw your statement it’s most likely the cps will drop the case against your mate.

Stick to your guns and withdraw it, I very much doubt they will ‘do’ you with wasting Police time - they may threaten you with it but I don’t it will amount to anything.

Is it possible he could have blocked the page somehow?

Doubtful, I would imagine it”s something to do with the browser (Internet Explorer, Firefox) cache or cokkies if your able to access it logged onto the PC as yourself. Have you tried clearing the cache/cookies/temp internet files? (Tools -> Options)
