Re: riff similarities in Musicians (Gear, Tabs & Lyrics)

There’s a break in Joey and, I think, Straight Life, where you can just hear the bass. Both sound very similar.

I found this out by accident. I recorded both Shameless and Semi-Detatched onto each side of a tape, way before the days of my MP3 player.
Part of the way through Joey, just after the bass part, I switched the tape over and it was the bass part of Straight Life, which I realised sounded very similar. What are the chances?

Re: I can’t play barre chords, please help me! in Musicians (Gear, Tabs & Lyrics)

I think you’re right about the height of the strings from the neck. I had a cheap electric with strings quite high of the neck and I could barre at all. When I bought an Epiphone, I noticed the strings were closer and I can barre now.

Re: Gibson Les Paul Standard - name her… in Musicians (Gear, Tabs & Lyrics)

Depends what kind of stuff you’re going to play on her. I only play sleazy kind of rock so I’d name it something like Roxy or Vegas. Cheap and nasty.

Saying that, I haven’t named my white Epiphone Les Paul yet. My old strat was John because it made a clean “JOHN!” sound, but my replica SG was Dave because it made a very fuzzy, distorted “DAAAAVE!” sound.

Re: folk music in Musicians (Gear, Tabs & Lyrics)

His new stuff, like Devils And Dust is sounding particularly Dylan-ish, but stuff like Born To Run and Born In The USA are definitely rock. The kind of rock you shouldn’t like. But do.

Re: folk music in Musicians (Gear, Tabs & Lyrics)

Define folk. It’s like metal with all the off-shot subgenres (death metal, speed metal, thrash metal, hair metal etc). Although I don’t know if there’s such thing as Death Folk, Speed Folk, Thrash Folk…

I’m a big Bob Dylan fan and play loads of his stuff on guitar, but some people would say he isn’t folk.

I listen to people like Gordon Lightfoot too.

Swansea area - Bassit and Drummer Needed in Musicians (Gear, Tabs & Lyrics)

Title: Swansea area - Bassit and Drummer Needed

Two guitarists and drunken vocalists seek Bassist and Drummer for sleazy rock outfit in Swansea area, aged around 17-20 (will consider older).
You don’t have to be brilliant, just competent and committed.
Want to sound like the bastard offsring of: Therapy? (of course), early Manics, Iggy And The Stooges, The*Ga*Gas, The Clash, Turbonegro, Metallica, Velvet Underground, Motley Crue, Guns N Roses, Monster Magnet, Soundgarden.

Looking for lots of rehearsals with a view to gigging and recording soon.

Epiphone’s “Les paul Special II“‘s are decent. They require a bit of set-up and the pickups could use something a bit thicker, but they feel nice in the hands and with the proper distortion/overdrive, they sound nice. Bought one that I play regularly about 2 yrs ago for $150 USD if memory serves. And it was 10 or 20 more expensive since it had a sorta red-laquer finish on wood, instead of flat black paint. Those guys ran like $130 or what not.

I bought one myself a few weeks ago and I’m totally in love with it. You can get them on ebay for about £120 instead of the £190+ they go for in the shops.

I’ve got an Ibanez at the moment, but I use it for experimental effects or Deftones kind of stuff, when it comes to bashing punk stuff I use a Les Paul.

I part ex’d the Ibanez for an Epiphone Les Paul today. It’s white and looks extremely sleazy with my leopard skin strap, I’m going for the early Manics look.

Re: Your Amps - Your Sound in Musicians (Gear, Tabs & Lyrics)

I bought a Line 6 Spider II half stack last year, it does pretty much everything I want. I can get good punk, metal and grungey tones on it and clean or warm tones when I need them. I’m still paying for it and the Ibanez I got at the same time with a bank loan, but it’s worth it. Getting a Les Paul next, my mate’s sounds great through my amp.

Re: Rock you monkeys tab in Musicians (Gear, Tabs & Lyrics)

If you can play Teenage Kicks, you can work it out easily enough.

Great song, my band are going to cover it once we get our arses into gear.

Re: Guitar/Bass for T? songs in Musicians (Gear, Tabs & Lyrics)

Title: Cheerz guys!

Thanks a lot guys, I was afraid no one would answer my question and leave me looking like a “message board billy-no-mates”.

Incidentally, that’s what Andy called Michael (Billy No Mates), in an interview with Lisa L’Anson in Berlin when Michael said he was going to go to the Prodigy gig on his own. It must have been around 1995, ‘cos Fyfe was with them. I now look a bit of an anorak, don’t I?

Cheers for the tips, I’ll try them out.

Guitar/Bass for T? songs in Musicians (Gear, Tabs & Lyrics)

Title: Guitar/Bass for T? songs

Anyone know:

A) The Chords/Tabs for Gimme Danger?

B) The bass for Diane? (I know it’s probably really easy, like the guitar, but I just want to be sure)

C) Tab/Chords for Tango Romeo?
