Re: Therapy? Frustration And The American Fans in General Therapy? Topics

JSar666 wrote:

Most of the US T? fans I’ve met online have been cool and I can understand their frustration. Most of them know the lack of album releases and tours is down to label politics and other bullshit…

I really would like T? to be able to do a huge US tour. Hopefully the next album will be “good enough” for a US label to snap it up…

a “huge US tour” will never happen in the forseeable future. What they need to do is this, (and mind you it’ll probably not work either)…

#1> Get connected to a festival tour. Like the Ozz-fest. They’d be the opener on the small stage, yes… but they’d open themselves to an audience. Or perhaps (though it’d more a stretch, no matter how many punk claims are made) the Warped tour. In some ways, while I’m hard pressed to call their current (if any of their) music “punk”, the Warped tour audiences might be more accepting and open to T?’s sort of music than the metalheads at Ozz-fest.

#2> Do a cheap small-club/van tour. Yep, a ford Econo-Line tour. Likely the guys, their gear, and a soundguy/roadie. Hell, if money’s a concern (and I know they’re not poor, but I’m also intelligent to know they aren’t rich.. they’re comfortable), find as many USA fans as they can in larger cities, and get their help. I live in Tampa, Florida, which as a “metro area” is fairly big. It’s an hour and a half from Orlando, obviously another decent sized city. I own a house that I could let ‘em crash in for free, and own a nic ebass and les paul I’d even loan ‘em. Fuck, if they needed it, I’d take a few days off of work and tag along to help load in + load out, and all I’d want is some merch + the ability to take photos.

I’ll admit, there’s some things they could try in the states, like the 2 suggestions above. #1 might be a little hard, but #2 is easy.. but again, they’re getting on in their lives, they have families and kids.. and if I was in their position, would I want to scrape buy for a few months living in a van in another country for *a CHANCE*?.. or would I rather do my normal decent tours, and have more time w/ my family?.. I’d pick the second choice..

Re: Therapy? Frustration And The American Fans in General Therapy? Topics

And forgive me for blathering on, but I’ll make one last point to make sure anyone reading this realizes where I’m at.

I’d love to see T? go big in America, but I don’t see it happening. It’s sad, but it’s the truth. I think T? themselves have realized this.

I am happy to see that while they’re not huge over seas, they’re huge enough to make a good living and continue to live a successful life making music that I can dig, even if it means dropping $30 USD on a disc, which is about the regular rate for their albums for me!

Re: Therapy? Frustration And The American Fans in General Therapy? Topics

Title: and again

I’m not here to be an asshole and argue. The facts are this, I have had interaction w/ the music industry in various ways in the states. I work in the entertainment industry (in a very disconnected way). I am a huge fucking T? fan. Fuck, I had a website about ‘em before the teethgrinder site existed (which turned into this one), and I’m in the USA!… I’ve flown across the country for the one time I’ve gotten to see ‘em play live!

Basically, I’m stating what I’ve seen and learned about the industry. It’s sad, but I really believe it’s true. T?’s been up and down in what they’ve released, in my books, but they’re insanely better than most crap on the radio… and that’s not just in the states, but I’ve heard alot of stuff that’s popular over seas too.. it’s pretty crappy too (most of it).

Nope not kidding i don’t think the lyrics to Rock You Monkeys are the sole reason why NANE hasn’t recieved a US release but maybe one factor that could be considered as to why no US label will sign them.

The differences between NIN and Green Day and T? are NIN and Green Day already have established fanbases so no matter what they release it’s going to sell a certain amount.T? don’t have much of a fanbase in the US so i don’t think any record label will take the risk with them.

I’ll preface this with the fact that I’ve been doing house repairs all day, and am now rather drunk so I do apologize if I come off as an asshole.

I’ll give you that labels are more apt to allowing a “known quantity” such as NIN or Green Day to release an anti-gov tune or album than an unknown, but let’s review. The music industry has been insanely liberal forever. A label that’d be the type (ie the type to sign T?’s sort of music) to pick up Therapy would likely have a left leaning (read, anti-Bush) political stance anyhow, they wouldn’t care.

My point is, it’s silly to say that the politics behind that tune would impact T?’s ability to get signed in the states. If it did, it was reason #300 behind a bunch of other reasons.

Don’t get me wrong, the reasons are sad and pathetic ones. Reason #1: They only sold one album well in the states (troublegum). Why? That’s about the only one that had any push. Reason #2: They were later dropped. Er.. they were screwed in label mix ups. Reason #3: They’ve been around a while and not had any hits pop up and peak any interest. er.. who cares on that one?… but the fact is, this is the logic that labels go through.

Politics, they could care less. It’s very very very “in” to be anti-administration right now. Take it from someone in the States.

(and not to push it off track but.. come on, new NIN album is decent stuff!! It could be better, but at least it isn’t that over indulgent 2-disc full of crappy instrumentals like “the fragile” !!)

;)

Re: Budget Guitars? in Musicians (Gear, Tabs & Lyrics)

Title: whee guitars

forgive me as I realize 99.9% of people reading this aren’t in the states, but I know values by US-Dollars.. so ..er. sorry.

But..

For new guitars on the cheap that’re decent…

Epiphone’s “Les paul Special II“‘s are decent. They require a bit of set-up and the pickups could use something a bit thicker, but they feel nice in the hands and with the proper distortion/overdrive, they sound nice. Bought one that I play regularly about 2 yrs ago for $150 USD if memory serves. And it was 10 or 20 more expensive since it had a sorta red-laquer finish on wood, instead of flat black paint. Those guys ran like $130 or what not.

Now.. don’t laugh. I bought it on a whim for $200 about 5 yrs ago. It’s red (obviously not a requirement), it’s semi-hollow body, it has those wierd looking “lipstick” pickups, it’s neck feels like someone sawed a baseball bat in half… but once you get over that realization, plug it into a good distortion pedal.. it growls like an f’in beast.. the danelectro u2 re-issue. I’m sure they’re available on the cheap used.

for the used market, look into older Fender Strats NOT MADE IN AMERICA, NOT SAYING “SQUIRE” IN LARGE LETTERS!!. Let me clarify this. There was a stretch of time that they made their cheaper/foreign-made line, the squires.. but some (namely the Mexican ones) were really *VERY VERY* nice guitars. Needed a bit of set-up/modification, but for the price + a bit of “sweat-equipty” you could find yourself w/ a guitar for $150 that played like a dream.

Mind you if you have the cash, splurge on a nice american made Gibson Les Paul or Fender Strat, depending on your taste in guitars.. obviously alot of us don’t have the money for that!! (thankfully I saved it up for a 79 strat before I decided to get all adult and buy a house and that sort of garbage!)

and again, as I realize anyone reading this likely lives in the UK, perhaps just keep these guitar names in mind if you’re at a used shop. I know shipping and import taxes/fees can really ramp up the cost on stuff, if they’re not available locally.. but the new guiatrs I mentioned likely are… hopefully via a regular distribution situation, so their prices aren’t jacked up…

I was just listening to NANE and maybe the lyrics to Rock You Monkeys are one of the reason why no US label will release NANE.

You’ve got to be kidding, right?

Heard much of Green Day’s “American Idiot” album? .. that wouldn’t get released or sell! oh wait, one of the biggest albums as of late.

And no way anyone’s gonna release a first single off an album by a band that’s been off the scene/charts for 5+ years, especially if it was an anti Bush administration song! .. oh woops, “Hand That Feeds” by NIN.. darn, nix that idea eh?

And to the guy who made the mention of Nickelback. Yeah, they’re crap, but there’s lots of crap being sold overseas as well.

It’s unfortunate that T? isn’t popular in the states, and I fear their sell-by date has passed (ie, people will write them off as something that wouldn’t sell).

It’s too bad. Their one stroke of success here was Troublegum. Recent disc (NANE) is decent. I still say Suicide Pact is fucking brilliant.

Re: Therapy? Tribute CD?? in General Therapy? Topics

Title: tribute cd

a singer I enjoy (guy named todd Snider) has a “fan tribute” cd that was made.. but it totally exists online, so it’s a good way to do it.. that way the fans can enjoy it, as can the public.. plus new fans might stumble across it, like the songs and go find the originals..

plus I have room on my machine to host ‘em (not a dialup/home cable, etc) if a space is needed…

It’s sad. CP, was released by some little label, but is the only T? CD which can still actually be found in a store over here.

I’d agree it’s a bit odd where CP pops up (if by “over here” you mean the states).. I’ve not seen a new copy in years, but did about 8 yrs ago or so.. even had a friend come across a copy of it on 12” around that time who (luckily for me) bought it for a gift!

(funny tidbit on that one, I had the cd in my bag once while in highschool (who’d want to listen to classes when you could listen to music), and a female I’d been a bit taken by gave me a small school picture of her, and I tossed it in the cd case.. pulled it out later and her picture had aligned itself perfectly over the painting, so you saw THERAPY? her face then CAUCASION PSYCHOSIS .. was rather fitting in retrospect..)

This thread’s negative responses are a bit silly, and do ring of the whole “brits all have bad teeth” thing.. spiteful and stereotypical.. ;)

As for changing the name, it’s doubtful. As mentioned, the Foos album “Colour and the Shape” was released w/ that title.. they took it the same in the states as over there.

And for the gent who said the bit about stupid moves of American labels.. don’t get me wrong, I’m not a big fan of any labels, no matter what country, but come now.. using Britney Spears as an example of American business stupidity?

2 words for you my friend.. “The Streets”.

Re: US release date? in General Therapy? Topics

Title: whee!

hey, dave from USA here kids..

as for dvd players that’ll play other regions, look into Apex brand players.. they tend to be cheaper dvd players and often have firmware you can find updates for online, or “service modes” that you can open up, that’ll allow playing other regions.

and i know I’ll get castrated for saying this, but at first listen to the first couple tracks, I was a bit disappointed.. though now as I’m going through a proper listen of all the tracks, I’m getting excited about this album.

(though honestly I’ve disliked the first single off of their last few albums, always felt the “deep cuts” had so much more potential. but no biggie!)

Here’s to hoping we get a good way to purchase it in the states, though doubtful.. it’ll feel like I’m buying semi-detached all over again.. aka import and really f’in expensive (if memory serves that ran me about $25 usd plus a few for shipping.. pretty sad when average cd is about $15 usd in the shops)

While I don’t know about copyright law
over seas, a possibility to
dvd-player-less users.. find someone who
has one, buy the dvd and a vhs cassette,
then run to your friends place with beer,
drink heavily while dubbing a copy onto
vhs, then take both home.

Typically if copies are for “personal
backup use” they’re okay.. So buy the
dvd, make a copy to tape, and keep both
to yourself… should be good.. then you’ve
given the T? their due (money wise) and
you have it on tape..

todd snider in Other Bands & Artists

Title: todd snider

okay, very far off from the norm for this
place.. but hell I’m deleriously awake too
early too long, so I’ll share some.

Todd Snider’s live album, “Near Truths
and Hotel Rooms”.. is brilliant.

Todd Snider, by definition.. is a folk
singer. To be more exact, he’s been called
the troubador for the slacker generation.

His voice isn’t the best. His guitar
playing is adequate at best. His harmonica
playing is mediocre.

But he’s brilliant, why? He’s a perfect case of “the sum of the parts is greater”.

He started out with few songs, and long
sets.. so he started to tell stories
in between songs.

This leaves you with a performer who’s
as much a lovable stand up comedian,
retelling odd and hilarious events he’s
lived through in between tunes.

His songs range from sarcastic views of
life such as “Double Wide Blues” and
“(Things That You Do When You’re) Broke”,
to near tear jerking meaningful songs
such as “Spoke As A Child” and “Long
Year”.

His tours are typically like this album,
him with an accoustic guitar, period.
You go away from his shows and this disc
feeling more that you’ve spent time with
a brilliant story teller than saw a “show”.

He’s great and I’d highly recommend anyone
with an open mind to music giving him
a try. Like I said, in the basic sense,
he is “folk music”.

i possibly would if i wanted something
to do. went to a punk show a few months
back w/ 3 bands i’d never heard of, just
because i wanted to take some pics of
bands (plus it was at a venue i’ve hated
for years due to their over use of red
lighting, which fucks with some cameras,
inclluding a few of mine.. figured good
practice).l..

ended up really liking one of the bands,
plus realized the amazing talent of the
guitarist in “the swinging utters” who
could play accordian while smoking a cig.
sent some photos along to their site, which cool enough.. all emails are answered… by the bands wives! it’s really a cool family vibe..

one good clue is that the story that
