When you digitise a piece of audio you can extract it perfectly into a wav with no loss of quality. However the filesize is a bit crap. So you can compress the file down e.g. mp3. Mp3 is a lossy format because to achieve the reduced filesize it throws away unecessary (depending on the settings) data. Lossless compression means it has been reduced in size but the quality remains intact.
