I remember around the promotion for Lifeblood they said they were going to go back into the studio as they were on a roll, and record an even more electronic record.
Me and about four other people around the world screamed hurray, and we heard nothing about it. So I’d love to know what the next record will be like.
Also, is it just me, or has the license on God Save The Manics run out? I can’t play the fucking thing any more.

The Evens are great, but nothing like Minor Threat/Embrace/Fugazi… they definitely fall into the indie category as opposed to (post-)hardcore. Worth checking, though, the songs are great.

I have Crimson, which is utterly fantastic - Dethbed is a ridiculously good song - and have heard Good Mourning, which I really like.

Man, I thought JDB’s album was phenomenally dull… melodies didn’t engage me, while I thought Lifeblood was incredibly pretty and superbly produced (as I always say, I think it’s a really good album, just not a good Manics album).
I can’t wait to hear Nicky’s album. It’s going to be fucking awful, but I have a feeling it’s going to be hilarious.

Q And Not U are the best live band I’ve ever seen.

The Downward Spiral is one of my favourite albums ever. The rest I find about 50/50 great/dull.

I’m actually going to be a petty little bastard and suggest that both Fugazi and At The Drive-In are post-hardcore and not emo. Not that the genres don’t run pretty close at times, but yeah.

These Arms Are Snakes also come highly recommended.

And everyone should check out a song called To Buy A Gun by Idiot Pilot… it runs like a cross between Glassjaw and Knives Out by Radiohead. Shame most of their other material is cack.

Haha, my friend saw SunnO))) live, said it was one of the most terrifying things ever. Am quite jealous.

C93 randomly turned folk about 1988, I fucking love their later stuff, but always found the industrial -> folk change pretty fucking bizarre.

Gobsmacked at the lack of reference to Rites Of Spring (first emo band) and Drive Like Jehu.
Also I should mention the obvious of Sunny Day Real Estate, The Get Up Kids, Braid and so on…
And on the newer emo front, Glassjaw were pretty great, although unfortunately between them and Thursday they spawned stuff like Funeral For A Friend. :(

Horrific album. With Kid A and Amnesiac they started out well on the electronic/moody/weird side of things, but with HTTT and now this is really sounds like Thom’s just reading “IDM for dummies” and making the most watered down, half-arsed electronic music available. Christ, this makes Four Tet sound interesting.
Harrowdown Hill and Cymbal Rush are pretty cool, but the rushed nature of them and Nigel -fucking- Godrich’s “Let’s make every instrument sound flat and dull” production suck the life out of them too.

Space were kind of entertaining in the same way as Cast and Dodgy… pointless fluff, but quite fun.

Ah, Nurse With Wound… industrial is where it’s at. I recommend the albums Nature Unveiled and Dogs Blood Rising by Current 93 if you like NWW. And of course Throbbing Gristle.
Noise rock I often find a bit… I dunno, half-arsed? Proper noise though I do enjoy… Merzbow, Government Alpha and such. Fun. And some of Pan Sonic’s stuff is pretty fucking intense.

Half the stuff in this thread isn’t noise at all… SunnO))) are doom metal, MBV are fucking shoegaze

I’m actually with you on APC, but I’m a sucker for melody and noise… APC were loaded up with the melodies (particularly on 13th Step), whereas Tool never really made a racket and certainly never stepped too far into the world of melodic songwriting. Mind you, I still like all three… I’m beginning to think Undertow is my favourite, actually.

I love… um, Endlessly, is it? That one’s lovely. On the whole, I really want them to do something a little happier, to be honest. Still, after everything they’ve said about the new album, I’m very curious about the direction it’s going to take. Electronic bits and mellow jazz? I wonder how honest they’re being.

Aenima. Songs actually stick out to me on it, unlike Lateralus which, no matter how many times I listen to it, still sounds like one seventy minute track with Schism in the middle to me.

Ugh. Used to like them for a bit, can’t stand them any more. Matt Bellamy is an incredibly limited songwriter - every song on Absolution follows the same melodic rules, and it gets so tiresome. The record is pretty impressive sounding, though - the production and arrangement are excellent. But I just don’t like the songs. And it’d be nice if they weren’t quite so over the top, to be honest. It just gets silly.

After The Hand That Feeds, I was expecting it to be more like that - a Pretty Hate Machine II, if you will. It was far less accessible than I was hoping in the end.

Yeah, I wasn’t bowled over by With_Teeth, although it had some strong moments, but it’s definitely better than The Fragile, which is still about three times too long for its own good. I want Trent to kick me in the teeth or soothe me with melody, not bore me to death with endless drumloops and whispering.

I find him a little limited in his songwriting at times, as parts of his records really seem samey to me. To listen to Michigan, Seven Swans and Illinois in close succession kind of highlights his limitations. However, when he’s on target he’s really fucking good.
I hope he manages all fifty states. Doubt he will, but still.

Lanegan’s pretty fucking cool, although Campbell is my favourite part of the album. Love her voice. Great record.

Fridge are cool, but I find Four Tet tedious as hell. A couple of his tracks are nice, but it’s mostly just really watered down IDM. Sort of the Coldplay of electronic music, really.
Saw him live, too, vastly unimpressed.

Funeral was released in 2004. Before September, too. The only thing that happened in 2005 was it got a bigger distribution deal.

Heh, Morning Bell/Amnesiac is the only song in my 1,500 record-strong collection that I skip every time it comes on. I haven’t listened to it throughout in years.

Y’see, I never take things on a stylistic way too much. Amnesiac certainly is Radiohead ‘trying’ to be things, from an objective view, but I love the melodies and the atmosphere, and I think it succeeds very well on both accounts.
I still think ‘worst album ever’ is a really strange thing to say.
