does anyone know if iain banks’ sci fi stuff is worth reading? i’m going to work my way through his “usual” books regardless if the wasp factory is anything to go by.
They’re darkly comic but tend towards the ‘space opera’. Try starting with ‘the player of games’, which should give you a good feel for what his sci fi’s like - and a scathing parody of capitalism/thatcherism, to boot. If you like it read on, if not stick with his ‘novels’. The Bridge is my favourite of these, but someone mentioned The Crow Road, which is also good. There are a few stinkers - Canal Dreams, Espedair Street and Dead Air really didn’t do it for me. Raw Spirit is non fiction and is a good read if you are a scotch whisky obsessive (like Banks).
I’ve just finished re-reading Stasiland by Anna Funder. It’s a collection of peoples’ experiences in East Germany before reunification. Absolutely heartbreaking stuff. The simultaneous read was ‘How mumbo-jumbo conquered the world’ by Francis Wheen. Equally heartbreaking , in its own way.

Re: new order “waiting for the siren’s call” in Other Bands & Artists
11 tracks - 5 mingers, the remaining 6 are brilliant. It’s said that the title track is the song they’re most proud of in their entire career, but I found it unlistenable. On the other hand one review called ‘guilt is a useless emotion’ ‘a career low’, but it’s a glorious Kylie-esque disco stomper.
Lyric-wise, Barney’s never been able to resist a lazy ryhme, but it’s all part of the fun. It’s good to have them back - anyone know about live dates?

Re: The comedy thread in Chit-Chat
LAY 1 was completely different. Each episode was only 10 mins long for a start!
The style was of a science programme to be watched at school with your teachers. It was simply a series of increasingly bizarre ‘scientific’ experiments undertaken by men in scary 70’s style suits and beards.
Examples: worker ants building an igloo, germs originating from germany, highly explosive ‘moth apples’ and the ‘forbidden notes’ on a piano which make your ears bleed (kept in the locked ‘box diabolique’ on every piano), not to mention the telephone call received from a human brain in a jar.
see what it says here…

It’s just a shame that LAY2 is nowhere near as good.:(

Re: The comedy thread in Chit-Chat
The first series of ‘Look around you’, when it was more of a schools’ telly spoof, rather than the ‘tomorrows world’ style of the current series.

Darkplace. Class stuff - I wish they’d do a second series, but then they’d have to pretend to have recently discovered yet another bunch of never-before-seen tapes…

Title: Curtis?
Hmmm, don’t really see Jude in the role, myself.
John Simm played Barney in 24hr PP. He’d be my first choice.
Before you ask, a guy called Sean Harris played IC in that movie

When I bought my tickets at Crash I asked about stage times. The bloke told me that at the cockpit ‘music has to finish by 10.30 on a monday.’- should be plenty of time to make an 11.15 train.
From that I’m guessing a 9pm stage time?

Saw Bubba Ho Tep in Leeds on Saturday. A cool B Movie. Not in the evil dead class, but it’ll still be great on DVD with some mates and a few beers.
Ster Century Cinema, if you’re interested, and I think it runs to the end of this week.

I also read at least two books simultaneously, usually one fiction, the other non-fiction (plus some music papers at the beginning of the month).
I think books about quantum mechanics (Brian Greene - The elegant universe) go well together with love stories (Keith Lowe - New free chocolate sex). :)
The elegant universe is a fantastic read - I read it simultaneously with ‘baby I don’t care’ - a biography of Robert Mitchum. It seemed to work in a strange way…

I’m reading The inner game of music (nicely recommended by a kind member of the WoM). It really is great.
Hey Marja, Glad to be of service.:)
I often read several books at once (while listening to music and checking out the teletext on the TV, I might add, but that’s another story). Currently I’m re-reading ‘Chaos’ by James Gleich and ‘A criminal history of Mankind’ by Colin Wilson. It’s got me thinking about whther chaos theory can be applied to criminality in any meaningful way.
Anybody got any suggestions for other simultaneous reads?
‘Life of Pi’ with ‘The curious incident of the dog in the night time’ was another good one…
