They also recorded a cover of David Bowie’s “Andy Warhol” that night, I believe. It’s the b-side of the “Vaseline” single.

I remember from my childhood seeing this guy on finnish TV with his spoons and doing “spaghetti” out of them. Anyone else remember this fellow:)?

The same guy has a popular TV show on German television right now, which is called: “Looking for the next Uri Gellar”. These are bullshit times.

Incredible Fakes/Hoaxes in Chit-Chat

A friend of mine and me we have this little regional radio show. We always make Top 10 lists for our show and next week, we’d like to present some of the biggest fakes in history ever (and by that I don’t mean bands who have sold out or something like that, but cases of people making the world believe in lies).

Unfortunately, I cannot think of 10, so I came here to see if you people had some incredible stories to tell. Here’s what I’ve got so far:

Clifford Irving: the guy supposedly wrote the authorized biography of Howard Hughes in the early 70’s, but it was all just made up (as shown in the movie “The Hoax).

Stephen Glass: fabricated stories and interviews for “The New Republic” (as depicted in the movie “Shattered Glass”)

Tom Kummer did much the same with celebrity interviews in Germany (as he tells himself in his book “Blow Up”).

The case of Erika Schinegger: an Austrian female skier who easily won the worldcup and other ski races and was later found out to be a man. (not so much a case of “fake”, though. More of a revelation to himself)

Milli Vanilli: well, everybody knows the story.

Re: The end for Velvet Revolver in Other Bands & Artists

Actually, neither Duff nor Slash have the songwriting talent to ever step out of the shadow of their former band and an unknown singer won’t change that. So, even if it may take another 100 years, they should be waiting for Axl to do something instead of boring us with uninspired cock rocklike they did with Velvet Revolver.

i know its all opinions but my mouth fell open when i read ‘The Holy Bible sounds rather polished’!!!! eh??
ok, compared to The Exploited it does

yeah, that’s exactly what I meant. there are rawer punk bands out there and the manics just don’t work as a punk band to me, since they started out as hedonistic gn’r-wannabes and turned into philosophic radiohead-wannabes. that sounds harsh, but i actually prefer them like that. they seem much more comfortable that way.

they tried to get mike patton before - he would be great!

what the hell are they thinking? patton wouldn’t do this in a hundred years. besides it would be an even worse choice than weiland. yes, they are great rock singers, but not for that sleazy old-fashioned l.a. rock that slash, duff and the band play for better or worse.

now, i think sebastian bach was suggested by weiland himself as a tongue in cheek proposition.

velvet revolver should just hang it up and get together with axl rose already.

Re: the wildhearts in Other Bands & Artists

Cool news, although they’ll hardly be able to better “Waiting Room”.

I’m excited to see that they also do “Carmelita”, easily Warren Zevon’s best song ever. They won’t be able to better that one, either, but it could still be a cool version. Super Furry Animals cover version also sounds interesting.

Re: Layne Staley and Kurt Cobain in Other Bands & Artists

The Layne book is said to be awful. I’m not sure about this at all.

Anybody seen the movie “Primer”? in Chit-Chat

I’ve seen it and I didn’t get so much of it that I feel really stupid.

Now, I’m certain that most people don’t get half of this movie, but would never admit it, because they want to be part of the clever in-crowd (and I’m sure the writer/director of the film intended people to react just like that).

So, has anybody seen it? Opinions?

Re: The end for Velvet Revolver in Other Bands & Artists

You’re right, Caputo is a good singer and he would be a decent replacement, but please let’s not drag any more respectable musicians into this mess.

LOL!

Wow, it was just a question of time before VR would split up, wasn’t it? I’m actually quite surprised everybody seems to have liked their 1st album by now. It was complete and utter crap. Even the 2nd one was better and that one sucked hard, too!

Anyway, I’m glad to hear STP got back together (for now). So, nobody’s reporting on Army Of Anyone not being together anymore then?

Next: GN’R reunion, album and tour and then Axl’s death can finally end the band as it was always meant to happen.

Re: Rank the Manics albums from best to worst in Other Bands & Artists

Just listening to “The Holy Bible” again. I don’t really get why everybody thinks so much of it. It’s not very punk to me, rather polished. And James’ vocals just sound forced and not threatening or raw or whatever.

Don’t get me wrong, I like the album, I just don’t think it’s what the Manics sound best at doing.

But JDB sings it so beautifully live:

Seriously, who else nails the high notes so perfectly live?

Re: Iron Maiden in Other Bands & Artists

@Dennis

Yeah, but no one’s forcing them to continue putting out DVDs. I also thought it was weird when they started “Early Days”, then released the “Death On The Road”-DVD. continuing the “History” series on the special features of the re-releases of the old live videos seems to make sense, but fans are bound to feel a bit snubbed. I do, anyway.

Let me guess - he plays tuned down riffs with a very slight groove on (only) the first 3 frets of his guitar and goes “Whooooooaaaaarrrrggghhh!” in his throaty growl a lot?

The thing is, it doesn’t sound like that at all, but if you’re saying that this is how everything by Max has sounded even before Soulfly then you just don’t like thrash metal.

Max sounding like Sepultura in 1992 again is a good thing to me, too (although I don’t think that’s a completely accurate desription of the Cavalera Conspiracy project).

Re: Rank the Manics albums from best to worst in Other Bands & Artists

@buffalo-boy

I agree about “Let Robeson Sing”. I don’t even think the riff is any good.
“Repeat” is okay. “Life Becoming A Landslide” I really like.
“So Why So Sad” is a weird one, because althought the melody and most of all the production are mediocre, the song is kinda intriguing to me. Not a complete failure anyway, because they sounded daring on that single.

@deadsetgav

I know what you mean, but I actually really like it. For one album, that is. I love how Therapy? are trying to sound different from album to album soundwise, too.

@buffalo-boy

Agree about both things.

Isn’t “The Everlasting” another song Wire really, really hates? I love it. I can’t stand “The Masses Against The Classes” myself.

It just sounds like soulfly to me.

Not at all, IMO. The riffs are heavier and more inspired and they finally dropped the tribe thing. It was good on “Roots”, but it has been lame ever since. And Max only seemed to played the low e string in dropped d tuning anymore.

Cavalera Conspiracy rocks harder and more thrashy than anything since “Chaos A.D.” Not a great record, but a satisfyingly solid return to form.

Cavalera Conspiracy in Other Bands & Artists

Surprisingly, their debut isn’t all that bad.

“Hex” and “The Doom Of All Fires” rock. The latter reminds me of The Wildhearts for some reason. Don’t ask me why.
