I’m really surprised that you chose to go with this board rather than create your own ASP solution. I remember talking with you a while back, and you mentioned that you thought these boards have “too many features” (which I agree with). The PHP is fast, the features are well-built and the code is rock-solid, but I always thought you’d want to do it yourself. I suppose with time constraints it would be impossible to do all of this yourself though. Are you planning on doing the rest of the site with PHP now?

I agree that it would be. This would be a pretty easy ASP script to do I think and could be nice if you put up a chat room.

Wow, this is the first time in a week I was even able to get on the board. Maybe you can just piggy-back the site on Therapy?’s server. That way you won’t have to pay extra for the SQL Server hosting.

Are you using a DSN or JET Driver to access the database? God, I’d hate to think of how big the database has gotten since you started this page.

Of course, you could always rewrite the entire thing in PHP with a MySQL database! I suppose that would be pretty darn fast.

That would probably a be a pain, Christian. Rene would need to write a cookie to your system, then check the cookie against the message board database everytime you log on. It would definitely slow things down a bit too.

The email notification isn’t that bad IF the message board uses a heirarchy rather than what is done here. If you reply to a post here, you’re in essence replying to every post on the thread. It could be set up so that you could reply to a specific post on the thread, in which case you’d only get an email when someone responded to that particular post, not the entire thread. Too much work to make it worthwhile though!

Title: A few ideas for you, Rene

Rene, have you thought about maybe implementing any the following ideas onto your board?

1. Email notification - Let the user choose to received a notification by email when someone replies to their post. I would assume this would be an easy CDONT script.

2. ‘Last post by’ - In addition to saying when the last post was put on a thread, how about including which user wrote the last post? I have a hard time keeping track of when I posted something (since the board is in GMT) and this would be a good way of seeing who replied last.

Have you ever checked out Ikonboard (http://www.ikonboard.com)? It’s a Perl-based board with the most features I’ve ever seen! I don’t think you’d even want to try implementing them all, but they do have some nice features that are worth stealing!

A simple JavaScript routine might do the trick. You can disable the ‘submit’ button after a user has clicked it once to prevent them from repeatedly clicking it when they think it didn’t work the first time.

There’s already several I-Drives and X-Drives set up with T? mp3s. I doubt Rene has the server space to host such a collection.

I agree with Rene in that Born in a Crash and Hats Off are EPs, and not real albums. I’ll also argue until I die that Opal Mantra is an EP as well, and not a single.

It’s way too slow. There isn’t even any point in having the 56K modem if I can’t even connect at half of that rate. I’ve tried everything I could to raise the connection speed, with no success. I figure that when I move I’ll at least have access to better phone lines, or Cable/DSL.

I have a 56K modem, but the connection I get with it is only about 24000bps, which is pretty slow by today’s standards. I’ll probably upgrade to a cable modem when I find a new place to live.

I already have the slowest internet connection on earth…the last thing I need is a thousand smiley faces and video clips sucking up my last few drops of bandwith.

I can remember Doughboys opening for T? in Europe a few years back, and then T? opening for Doughboys on the Canadian leg of the tour. T? also did some dates in the US with the Rollins Band back in 93 or 94.

The only Isolation remix I can think of offhand is the consolidated synth mix. I probably had it on my page a year or so ago… I do take requests, though I obviously can’t always promise to honor them.

I like the new design with the lighter colors. It’s easier on my eyes, and the monitor I use at work is a little dark to begin with.

Your server probably gives you unlimited POP3 alias accounts (ie. Iris@teethgrinder.com, unbeliever@teethgrinder.com). You could probably take a password and username from everyone, set them up with their account, and then they should be able to use something like Outlook to read it. HTTP based mail would probably be a huge pain in the ass to do, but since you use ASP, maybe it’ll be a little easier.

Thanks…no hurry, it might be a month or two before I start the moving procedure.
